  • This paper presents an investigation of a vehicle-to-vehicle distance control using a Hardware-in-the-Loop Simulation(HiLS) system. Since vehicle tests are costly and time consuming, how to establish a efficient and low cost development tool is an important issue. The HiLS system consists of a stepper motor, an electronic vacuum booster, a controller unit and two computers which are used to form real time simulation and to save vehicle parameters and signals of actuator through a CAN(Controller Area Network). Adoption of a CAN for communication is a trend in the automotive industry. Since this environment is the same as that of a real vehicle, a distance control logic verified in laboratory can be easily transfered to a test vehicle.

Parametric Study of the Effects of Train Wind on Running Stability (열차풍 효과가 고속열차 주행안정성에 미치는 파라메타 연구)

  • When constructing a high-speed railroad, the reduction of the distance between track centers and the width of track bed will save the construction cost. However the shortening the distance between track centers may cause the stability problems due to higher wind pressure. Therefore the extensive technical review and aerodynamical study should be performed to determine the adequate distance between track centers. In this study, the impact that the increase in wind pressure due to the change of aerodynamic phenomena with the change of the distance between track centers may have on two trains passing by each other was predicted, and the stability of train operation was analyzed in order to review the distance between track centers suitable to Honam HSR trains. We conducted the parametric study of the effects of train wind on the running stability.

Properties of the material on stainless steel propeller shaft with the weld working (스테인리스강 프로펠러축의 가공에 따른 재질특성에 관한 연구)

  • Stainless steel 304 or stainless steel 630 types using propeller shaft of a small ship or a FRP fishing boat generally restrain localization corrosion and abrasion damage occurrence to shaft bearing or grand packing contact. In general, the residual stress which remains after welding or heat treatment in material can cause the stress concentration or localization corrosion. In case of small ship, stainless steel such as STS304 has long been used for propeller shaft. Meanwhile, crew of small ship tend to reuse damaged propeller shaft after repair by welding and performing heat treatment to save cost. However, it was found that reused propeller shaft by repair often caused troubles in ship's operation. In this study, the basic guideline for maintenance and treatment of propeller shaft are investigated. From the results of investigation, remarkable deterioration of the material properties and corrosion resistance on the welded work part was observed.

  • IEEE 802.15.4 low-rate Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPAN) are expected to provide ubiquitous networking between small personal/home devices and sensors with low power consumption and low cost features. The technology employs special CSMA/CA (Carrier Sense Multiple Access/collision Avoidance) to save power consumption for small or portable WPAN-enabled devices. In this paper, we simulation the slotted CSMA/CA of IEEE 802.15.4 MAC and evaluate its performance limit in order to grasp the characteristics of Medium Access Control (MAC) of IEEE 802.15.4 WPAN.

  • In general the limit of EMU bases on the construction gauge. But to save the cost for construction, there is often a case that the gauge of construction for bogie is narrower than the existing gauge. Finally, out-board bogie type cannot be applicable because of the space. In this case, we can use the in-board bogie type which the support distance of both suspensions is narrower than out-board bogie. But we cannot use an in-board bogie indifferently because car with in-board bogie must also have the same performance as out-board bogie in wider gauge. Accordingly, we have to consider how many moments in the suspensions are applied due to the narrower support distance. And the characteristics of suspensions in the in-board bogie must be decided from the moments.

  • A water management system is developed to reduce the unit cost of production in wide-area waterworks. Improving productivity in waterworks is to save power rate. We suggest a method to schedule the supply of water according to the time-varying power rate and pump control scheme. Water pipeline analysis package (SynerGEE Water) is utilized to obtain optimal pump control solution adaptation to water demand. Our evaluation results show that developed scheme is more efficient than the conventional.

  • PLC (Power Line Communication) is the communication method using the existing power line installed in houses and offices to convert and transmit high frequency communication signal from tens of KHz to tens of MHz, and receive the filtered signal using high frequency filter The advantage of PLC is that PLC uses the existing power line installed in houses and offices so it does not require separate power line. Easy and convenient access using electric outlets is another advantage of PLC. However, PLC has some disadvantages such as limited transmission power, high load interference and noise, variable signal attenuation, characteristic of impedance, and selective possibility of frequency property. We designed the boiler temperature control system unit by using the PLC modem. We can avoid unnecessary heating of separate temperature control unit, and save the cost accordingly control stability of the proposed system is proven through the experiment.

  • Environmental information (temperature, humidity, vibration, $CO_2$, gas leakage, etc.) of building is an essential item to manage and monitor a building. For intelligent building, it is necessary to get temperature and illumination information to save energy and crack information to prevent structural problems. Moreover, temperature and gas leakage information to alarm a tire precaution, or humidity information to maintain comfortable environment. However, there have not been many researches on systems for gathering environmental information and building maintenance due to high costs. In this paper, wireless sensor network technology is applied to collecting building environmental information. Wireless sensor network is one of the latest issues and has low-power consumption, low-cost, self-configuration features.

  • The study presents two measurement split-plot models with a restricted randomization to save cost and time. Split-plot models are used to handle HTCM (Hard To Control Measurement) factors such as high temperature and long-time catalyst control. The models developed are represented by the processes for estimating the measurement precisions, that is, gauge R&R. The study also introduces three-step procedures to indentify resolution, improve R&R reduction, and evaluate the precision effect.
