  • The fretting wear characteristics of STS304 steel in seawater were investigated experimentally. A fretting wear tester was designed to be suitable for this fretting test. This study was focused on the effects due to the combination of normal load, slip amplitude and number of cycles and corrosive environment as the main factors of fretting. The results of this study showed that the wear volume increased abruptly at slip amplitude between 70 $\mu\textrm{m}$∼100 $\mu\textrm{m}$ by fracture of oxide layers but above that slip amplitude the wear volume increased steadily.

  • This study is devoted to the optimal design of compressed bars under axial compressive forces and exposed to a corrosive environment. The initial volume of the structure is taken as an optimality parameter. Gutman - Zainullin's exponential stress corrosion model is adopted for analysis. Analytical and numerical results are derived for optimal variation of the cross-sectional area of the bar along its axis.

  • A comprehensive framework for numerical simulation of time-dependent performance change of reinforced concrete (RC) structures subjected to chloride attack is presented in this paper. The system is composed of simplified computational models for transport of moisture and chloride ions in concrete pore structure and crack, corrosion of reinforcement in concrete and mechanical behavior of RC member with reinforcement corrosion. Service-life of RC structures under various conditions is calculated.

  • The objective of this study is to analyze, design and evaluate a new gas cleanup or sampling system that will remove erosive, corrosive, and fouling contaminants present in an effluent stream as either solid or liquid particles providing a clean gas stream. The gas clean-up or sampling system considered in this study is an irrigated, rotating element device. The device consists of a central disk-like hub from which emanate radially wires or cylindrical elements. (omitted)

  • In this study we investigate the reliability of a bar subjected to a random tensile load in presence of corrosion. We consider linear, quadratic and exponential models that connect the stress in the bar with the corrosion rate. Two probability densities are considered for the load, with attendant derivation of the time-dependant reliability. The design time of operation is determined utilizing the requirement that the reliability must not be less than the required value.

  • Corrosion of reinforced concrete structures in marine environment is one of the most important mechanisms of deterioration. Under Korean highway bridge, the time for the steel reinforcement in the concrete to exhibit initial signs of corrosion is within three decades. Therefore, 'SUM JIN' highway bridge, located in a corrosive marine environment on the south of Korea, had been examined the current condition of the steel reinforcement corrosion in concrete by half-cell potentials, chloride contamination of concrete and so on. According to the tests, the protecting film around the reinforcement is deteriorated and corrosion activity developed in tidal zone. The purpose of this paper is to report the effects of 'SUM JIN' highway bridge damaged by chlodide attack and to present the results of repair of 'SUM JIN' highway concrete bridge in domestic marine environment.

  • Use of deicing chemicals has been and will continue to be a major part of highway snow and ice control methods. Chloride-containing chemicals such as calcium chloride or rock salt are main deicers for the road. Extensive use of chloride deicers is, however, not only the source of substantial cost penalties due to their corrosive action and ability to deterioration roadway surface materials but also the source of environmental damages. Finding the deicing chloride agents impacts on the environment and develop the minimizing strategies, we evaluated that chloride deicing agents influence on highway roadside soil and establish the optimun strategies.

  • In this study mechanical and environment ability of FRP pole for a distribution line about high strength and good insulation properties. The basic filament winding process creates a helical winding pattern. In mechanical analysis of splice with mechanical fastened joint it is important to evaluate a critical load of faster having maximum stress. It is also present a result of several examples to compare this with analytical one. On repair design this finite element method will be used as basis. The influence of environmental factors, such as elevated temperatures, high humidity, and corrosive fluids, and ultraviolet(UV) rays, upon the performance of polymeric matrix composite is of concern in many applications.

  • It is well-known that the corrosive behavior of PMC (polymer matrix composite) structure is much better than the metal structure in the marine environment. The understanding of fracture behavior of PMC in the deep-sea environment is essential to expand its use in the marine industry. For a present study, fracture tests have been performed under four different pressure levels such as 0.1 MPa, 100 MPa, 200 MPa, and 270 MPa using the seawater-absorbed carbon/epoxy composite samples. Fracture toughness was determined from the work factor approach as a function of hydrostatic pressure. It was found that fracture behavior was a linear elastic for all pressure levels. The fracture toughness increased with increasing pressure.

  • Corrosion highly affects the lifetime and performance of machinery metallic components. The effects of shot peening on the fatigue life of Al 7075-T6 under corrosive environment are investigated in this paper. Experimental results show that the fatigue limit of shot peened specimen increases about 52%. That means the fatigue life of metallic components is highly extended by shot peening. The corrosion greatly reduces the fatigue strength depending on the corrosive condition from one week up to one year. In case of shot peened specimen, the corrosion does not reduce the fatigue strength and fatigue life up to six months. It means that the shot peening has superior effectiveness to reduce the influence of corrosion to the metallic materials.
