The corrosion characteristics of Al-Si-Mg alloy were investigated in $O_2$ and $H_2S/H_2$ environments at high temperature. The weight gain and the reaction rate constant of the Al-Si-Mg alloy were measured in the oxygen and hydrogen sulfide environments at 773K. The weight gain of Al-Si-Mg alloy was showed parabolic increase in the oxygen and hydrogen sulfide environments. The reaction rate constants were confirmed to be $1.45{\times}10^{-4}mg^2cm^{-4}sec^{-2}$ in the oxygen environment and $6.19{\times}10^{-4}mg^2cm^{-4}sec^{-2}$ in the hydrogen sulfide environment respectively. As a result of XPS analysis on the specimen surface, $Al_2O_3$ and MgO compounds were detected in oxygen environment and $Al_2(SO_4)_3$ sulfate was detected in the hydrogen sulfide environment. Corrosion rate of Al-Si-Mg alloy was about 4.3 times faster in hydrogen sulfide environment than oxygen environment.

Recently, because the lubricating oil showed a tendency to be emulsified and oxidized by high speed, high output and the extension of maintenance & conservation of marine engine, the cavitation erosion-corrosion at such an environment became a big problem on effective performance of engine. Therefore, there was a need to study the behavior and protection of erosion-corrosion damage, and then applied inhibitor to a protective method of cavitation erosion- corrosion damage. At this time, test environments were marine lubricating oil & various emulsified oil that mixed distilled water and sea water etc., and also used 20KHz, 24.mu.m piezoelectric vibrator as an experimental apparatus of cavitation erosion. With this apparatus, we investigated an influence of the emulsified oil on characteristics of erosion-corrosion and protection for erosion-corrosion by inhibitor at slide bearing metals.
Effects of corrosion inhibitors (i.e., sodium nitrite, sodium hexametaphosphate, trimethylamine (TEA), sugar, and urea) on the corrosion resistance of carbon steel in CaCl2 solution were investigated. The test solution was designed with response surface methodology of design of experiments (DOE) in the range of 0 ~ 50 ppm for NaNO2, 0 ~ 200 ppm for (NaPO3)6, 0 ~ 2000 ppm for TEA, 0 ~ 3000 ppm for sugar, 0 ~ 200 ppm for urea with 3 wt% CaCl2. The corrosion potential and the corrosion rate were measured with potentiodynamic polarization tests and analyzed statistically to find main effects of inhibitor concentrations and interactions between them. As a result, hexametaphosphate was the most effective compound in reducing the corrosion rate. Sugar also reduced the corrosion rate significantly possibly because it covered the surface effectively with a high molecular weight. The inhibiting action of sugar was found to be enhanced by adding trimethylamine into the solution. Nevertheless, trimethylamine did not appear to be effective in inhibiting corrosion by itself. However, urea and sodium nitrite showed almost no inhibition on corrosion resistance of steel.
Although there are various factors that threaten the security of ships, one of the most harmful is corrosion. It is not easy to find corroding areas and the status of corrosion, even though corrosion causes serious problems such as submergence and marine pollution as a result of leaking oil and polluted water. To monitor the corrosion of ships, non-destructive inspection, weight loss coupons, electrical resistance, linear polarization resistance, zero resistance ammeter, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy have been developed. However, these methods require much time to detect corrosion, and most are not appropriate for real time monitoring. Coating, sacrificial anode, and impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) methods have been developed to control corrosion. The ICCP and sacrificial anode methods are the most popular ways to prevent ship corrosion. However, ICCP is only appropriate for the outside of a ship and cannot be used for complex structures such as ballast tanks because these are composed of many separate chambers. Sacrificial anodes have to be replaced periodically. This paper proposes an integrated corrosion monitoring and control system (ICMCS) that can detect corrosion in real time and is appropriate for complex structures such as ballast tanks. Because the system uses titanium for an anode, exhausted anodes do not need to be replaced.
This work is concerned with an evaluation of dynamic boric acid corrosion (BAC) of low alloy steel for reactor pressure vessel of a pressurized water reactor (PWR). Mockup test method was newly established to investigate dynamic BAC of the low alloy steel under various conditions simulating a primary water leakage incident. The average corrosion rate was measured from the weight loss of the low alloy steel specimen, and the maximum corrosion rate was obtained by the surface profilometry after the mockup test. The corrosion rates increased with the rise of the leakage rate of the primary water containing boric acid, and the presence of oxygen dissolved in the primary water also accelerated the corrosion. From the specimen surface analysis, it was found that typical flow-accelerated corrosion and jet-impingement occurred under two-phase fluid of water droplet and steam environment. The maximum corrosion rate was determined as 5.97 mm/year at the leakage rate of 20 cc/min of the primary water with a saturated content of oxygen within the range of experimental condition of this work.
Under the seawater environment, the reinforced concrete structure is deteriorated due to physical and chemical attacks. The main deterioration mechanism is the chloride corrosion of reinforcing steel. The corrosion inhibitors have been used to protect the rebars from corrosion which are susceptible to chlorides in concrete. However, there is not clear conclusion about corrosion inhibitors yet. In this study, it is made the accelerated experiment with 3 kinds of corrosion inhibitors for various chloride ingresses. It is estimated corrosion inhibitors that inhibitors by Half-Cell Potential, corrosion area ratio and weight loss ratio. It is concluded that inhibitors are not effective to corrosion inhibition for excessive chloride ingress. However, the effect of inhibition is directly proportional ot contents of corrosion inhibitors in some chloride ingress.

In this study. investigated the effect of shot peening on the corrosion of SAE 5155 steel immersed in $3.5\%$ NaCl solution and corrosion characteristics by the heat treatment during shot peening process. The immersion test was Performed on the four kinds of specimens. Corrosion Potential, polarization curve, residual stress etc. were investigated from experimental results. From these test results, the effect of shot peening on the corrosion was evaluated The important results of the experimental study on the effects of shot peened SAE 5155 on the corrosion are as follows; Shot peened specimens show the low of corrosion current as compared with un peened specimens. In the case of corrosion potential, shot Peened specimen shows more negative Potential as compared with that of parent metal Surface of specimen, which is treated with shot peening Process. is Placed as more activated state against inner parent metal. Corrosion rate is shown that shot Peened specimens have less corrode than un peened specimens. But non heat treated shot peened specimens show the biggest weight loss owing to variable compressive residual stress layer by shot ball.
The carboxylates as a corrosion inhibitor has been studied by many researchers because of its environmental safety and low depletion rate. However, conventional test methods of inhibitor such as weight loss measurements, linear polarization resistance and corrosion potential monitoring etc., evaluate uniform corrosion of metals. These methods are unable to evaluate crevice-related corrosions, which are encountered in most of heat exchanging facilities. In order to choose the optimum corrosion inhibitor, the appropriate test methods are required to evaluate their performances in service environment. From this point of view, polarization technique was used to evaluate the characteristics of sodium heptanoate on corrosion behavior for carbon steel. Especially a thin film crevice sensor technique were applied to simulate the crevice corrosion in this study. From these experiments, we found that oxygen as an oxidizing agent was required to obtain stable passive film on the metal. Presence of oxygen, however, accelerated crevice corrosion. Potential shift by oxygen depletion and weakened inhibitive film inside the crevice were responsible for such accelerated feature. It is shown that film for corrosion inhibition is a mixture of sodium heptanoate and iron (II) heptanoate as reaction product of iron surface and sodium heptanoate. The iron (II) heptanoate which has been synthesized by reaction of heptanoic acid and ferrous chloride in methanol solution forms bidentate complex.

The inhibitive action of thiadiazolopyrimidines on mild steel in 1 M $H_{2}SO_{4}$ has been studied using weight loss, gasometric studies and electrochemical polarization and AC impedance measurements. The effect of temperature on the corrosion behaviour of mild steel in 1 M $H_{2}SO_{4}$ with optimum concentration of inhibitors was studied in the temperature ranging from 313-333K The adsorption of the inhibitor on the surface of mild steel was found to be exothermic, spontaneous and followed the mechanism of physisorption. The adsorption of these compounds on mild steel surface was found to obey Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The protective film formed on the surface of mild steel by the adsorption of inhibitor in 1 M $H_{2}SO_{4}$ solution was confirmed by optical microscopic technique. Synergistic effect of halide ions on mild steel in 1 M $H_{2}SO_{4}$ was studied by weight loss technique.
