  • Magnesium alloys become popular research topic in last decade due to its light weight and relatively high strength-to-weight ratio in the energy aspiration age. Almost all structure materials are supposed to suspend stress. Magnesium is quite sensitive to corrosive environment, and also sensitive to environmental assisted cracking. However, so far we have the limited knowledge about the environmental sensitive cracking of magnesium alloys. The corrosion fatigue (CF) test was conducted. Many factors' effects, like grain size, texture, heat treatment, loading frequency, stress ratio, strain rate, chemical composition of environment, pH value, relative humidity were investigated. The results showed that all these factors had obvious influence on the crack initiation and propagation. Especially the dependence of CF life on pH value and frequency is quite different to the other traditional structural metallic materials. In order to interpret the results, the electrochemistry tests by polarization dynamic curve and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were conducted with and without stress. The corrosion of magnesium alloys was also studied by in-situ observation in environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM). The corrosion rate changed with the wetting time during the initial corrosion process. The pre-charging of hydrogen caused crack initiated at $\beta$ phase, and with the increase of wetting time the crack propagated, implying that hydrogen produced by corrosion reaction participated in the process.

  • This study examined the corrosion behavior of bimetal materials composed of Fe-Ni alloy and Fe-Ni-Mo alloy, both suitable for use in electromagnetic switches. Electrochemical polarization and weight loss measurements revealed that, in contrast to Fe-Ni alloy, which exhibited pseudo-passivity behavior, Fe-Ni-Mo alloy had higher anodic current density, displaying only active dissolution and greater weight loss. This indicated a lower corrosion resistance in the Fe-Ni-Mo alloy. Equilibrium calculations for the phase fraction of precipitates suggested that the addition of 1 wt% Mo may lead to the formation of second-phase precipitates, such as Laves and M6C, in the γ matrix. These precipitates might degrade the homogeneity of the passive film formed on the surface, leading to localized attacks during the corrosion process. Therefore, considering the differences in corrosion kinetics between these bimetal materials, the early degradation caused by galvanic corrosion should be prevented by designing a new alloy, optimizing heat treatment, or implementing periodic in-service maintenance.

  • The compressive residual stress due to shot peening process can increase the intrinsic fatigue strength of surface and therefore would be beneficial in reducing the probability of fatigue damage. However, it was not known that the effect of shot peening on corrosion environment. In this study, the influence of shot peening and corrosion condition on corrosion property was investigated on immersed in 3.5% NaCl, 10% $HNO_3$+3% HF, 6% $FeCl_3$. The immersion test was performed with two kind of specimens. The immersion test periods were carried out on performed 360days. Corrosion potential and weight loss were investigated from experimental results. From these results, the effect of shot peening on the corrosion characteristics was evaluated.

  • The effect of post-weld heat treatment(PWHT) of SCM440 steel was investigated with parameters such as micro-Vickers hardness, corrosion potential, polarization behaviors, galvanic current, Al anode generating current and Al anode weight loss, etc. Each hardness of three parts(HAZ, BM, WM) by PWHT is lower than each of as-welded parts. However, hardness of WM area was the highest among those three parts in case of both PWHT and as-welded. Corrosion potential of WM part was the highest among those three parts and WM area was also acted as cathode without regard to PWHT. The magnitude of corrosion potential difference among three parts by PWHT was larger than that of three parts of as-welded, and corrosion current by galvanic cell of these three parts by PWHT was also larger compared to as-welded. Therefore, it is suggested that corrosion resistance property of SCM440 steel is decreased by PWHT than as-welded. However, both Al anode generating current and anode weight loss were also increased by PWHT compared to as-welded when SCM400 steel is cathodically protected by Al anode.

  • Electrolytic corrosion of the ship's hull can be occurred due to stray current during welding work using shore power and electrical leakage using shore power supply. The electrolytic corrosion characteristics were investigated for Al5083-H321 through potentiodynamic polarization and galvanostatic corrosion test in natural seawater. Experiments of electrolytic corrosion were tested at various current densities ranging from $0.01mA/cm^2$ to $10mA/cm^2$ for 30 minutes, and at various applied time ranging from 60 to 240 minutes. Evaluation of electrolytic corrosion was carried out by Tafel extrapolation, weight loss, surface analysis after the experiment. In the electrolytic corrosion characteristics of Al5083-H321 as the current density increased, the surface damage tended to proportionally increase. In the current density of $0.01mA/cm^2$ for a applied long time, the damage tended to grow on the surface. In the case of $10mA/cm^2$ current density for a applied long time, the damage progressed to the depth direction of the surface, and the amount of weight loss per hour increased to 4 mg/hr.

  • The effect of Post-Weld Heat Treatment(PWHT) of SS400 Steel was investigated with parameters such as micro vickers hardness corrosion potential polarization behaviors galvanic current Al anode generating current Al anode weight loss etc. Hardness of each parts(HAZ, BM, WM)by PWHT is lower than that of each parts by Non Post-Weld Heat Treatment(NPWHT) However hardness of WM of HAZ part was the highest among those three parts and HAZ area were also acted as cathode without any case of heat treatment. Potential difference between each three parts by PWHT was also smaller compared to NPWHT. Therefore it is suggested that Corrosion resistance property is increased by PWHT. However both Al anode generating current and anode weight loss was also decreased by PWHT compared to NPWHT when SS400 steel is cathodically protected by Al anode.

  • The corrosion inhibition nature of Ginger affinale extract for the corrosion of mild steel in 0.5N $H_2SO_4$ was investigated using weight loss, electrochemical impedance and potentiodynamic polarization methods. The results revealed that Ginger affinale extract acts as a good corrosion inhibitor in 0.5N $H_2SO_4$ medium. The inhibition efficiency increased with an increase in inhibitor concentration. The inhibition could be attributed to the adsorption of the inhibitor on the steel surface.

  • Recently, with the rapid development in the industries such as an iron mill and chemical plants, there is enlarged by the use of the piping. Sepecially, the piping connected with a fluid, if it is increase the speed of running fluid, ought to generate cavitation phenomenon with unbalanced pressure. So, the cavitation phenomenon cause serious damage of the piping, because it generate erosion and corrosion in the piping. In this study, the steel pipe piping water (SPPW) and SPPW on weldment were tested by using of cavitation-erosion test apparatus with nozzle and were investigated under the marine environment of liquid. (specific resistance : 25 $Omega$. cm) The main results obtained are as follows : 1) The total weight loss and weight loss rate of affected zone of weldment by corrosion-erosion in the sea water are more increased than that of base metal. 2) The electrode potential by corrosion-erosion in the sea water becomes less noble than that of base metal, and current density is more increased. 3) As time goes by, the total weight loss and weight loss rate by cavitation erosion-corrosion in air-liquid 2 phase flow become more increased then those in only liquid solution. but these values turn to be decreased.
