  • This paper presents the importance of corrosion control and protection technology with a real case study of heater tube rupture damaged by High temperature H2S-H2 corrosion in the refinery. The heater was operated at the Hydrocracking unit and the operation temperature and pressure was $340^{\circ}C$ and $18kg/cm^{3}$ respectively. Top side of the convection tube was thinned by high temperature hydrogen sulfide and hydrogen gas as a uniform corrosion and finally ruptured under operation pressure. Damaged area (Convection tube zone) was blocked by protection wall, so it was impossible to inspect with conventional nondestructive examination. Instead the elbow area which is out of the protection wall was inspected regularly to evaluate the corrosion rate of convection tube indirectly. However the operation temperature and the phase of the process stream was different between inside the chamber and outside the chamber. As a result, it caused severe corrosion to the horizontal convection tube inside the chamber comparing to the elbow outside the chamber. Finally convection tube was corroded more rapidly than the elbow and ruptured after 13 years operation. Because of the rupture, the heater was totally burned and the operation was stopped for 3 months until it has been reconstructed. To prevent this kind of corrosion problem and accident, corrosion control should be strengthened and protection technology should be improved.

  • Recently long-span bridges, such as Kwang-Ahn Grand bridge, Seo-Hae Grand Bridge, Young-Jong Grand Bridge, etc, have been designed and constructed near the shore. It needs to maintain the durability of marine concrete structures which are exposed to severe chloride environments. It is well known that corrosion of reinforcement steels in concrete structure is the most important cause for the durability of concrete structure which can be controlled by systematic preparatory corrosion protection works for economic and safe infrastructures. Various corrosion protection systems have been used for the corrosion protection of reinforcement steels from detrimental chemical components such as chloride, sulphate and etc. Since chloride can be penetrated into concrete in a variety way, an effective method has to be adopted by taking into full economical aspects and technical data of each protection system. The objective of this experimental study is to investigate the corrosion behavior of reinforcing steel in laboratory concrete specimens which are exposed to cyclic wet and dry saltwater, and then to develop pertinent corrosion protection system, such as corrosion inhibitors and cathodic protection for reinforced concrete bridges exposed to chloride environment. Resistance of various corrosion inhibitors and impressed current system have been experimentally evaluated under severe environmental conditions, and thus effective corrosion protection systems could have been Practically developed for future concrete construction.

  • This study has been conducted to confirm the effect of sacrificial anode cathodic protection system for 90 days to protect corrosion on pier that is located in Korea. The cathodically protected structure was a slab and a pile cap. Before the construction of cathodic protection system, the macrography was carried out. As a result of the macrography, many corrosion traces were confirmed in this structure. The trace was mainly focused on joint and zones that concrete cover was eliminated. To apply the cathodic protection system, many onsite techniques have been adopted. In addition, to confirm the inner state of steel in concrete properly, a corrosion monitoring sensor (DMS-100, Conclinic Co. Ltd) has been applied. Test factors were corrosion & cathodic protection potential, 4 hour depolarization potential, resistivity and current density. After 90 days from the installation of cathodic protection system, it could confirm that proper corrosion protection effect was obtained by considering the result of tests.

  • The corrosion protection methods of reinforcing steel in concrete are the various methods such as increasing thickness of cover concrete, using of reinforcing bars coated with epoxy, dosage of corrosion inhibitor as concrete admixture, cathodic protection method and etc. In this study, the performance of corrosion protection was investigated for the test specimens using corrosion inhibitors and cathodic protection, respectively. For this purpose, the accelerated corrosion tests for reinforcing steel were conducted according to the periodic cycles(140 days) of wetting($65^{\circ}C$, 90% R.H) and drying period($15^{\circ}C$, 65% R.H) for the test specimens. As a result, it can be concluded from the test that the effect of corrosion inhibitor was found to be variable with products, the cathodic protection method was found to be independent of salt concentration in concrete.

  • Corrosion currents flow through the seawater due to the different electrochemical potential between a hull and a propeller under the draft line of ship. Additionally, in order to protect the hull and other sensitive anodic parts of the ship from corrosion, the corrosion protection system, called impressed current cathodic protection(ICCP) equipment has been installed in most naval ships. Those currents could be harmful to the electromagnetic silencing of the naval ship because sea mines are triggered by even a feeble field value. In this paper, we described electric and corrosion related magnetic fields by ship's galvanic corrosion and a corrosion protection system, and prediction results of electric and corrosion related magnetic fields at any depth for the model ship.

  • Recent construction activities and maintenance of marine facilities have been accelerating to keep up with rapid economic growth in Korea. Marine concrete structures are exposed to salts an chloride from ocean environments. The corrosion of reinforcement steel caused by chloride-penetration into concrete may severely effect the durability of concrete structures. The objective of this research is to develop a durable concrete by investigating the corrosion resistance of various corrosion protection systems utilizing different water/cement ratio, silica fumes, corrosion inhibitors and etc. A tow-year verification test on various corrosion protection systems has been doing in the laboratory and at the seaside. Corrosion investigations on reinforcement steel are now under progress for more than 180 concrete specimen. Corrosion-related measurements include macrocell corrosion current, instant-off voltage between corroding and noncorroding reinforcement, chloride contents, the corroded surface areas on the reinforcement steel, and etc. A low level of corrosion is investigated on reinforcement steels in concrete specimen made with corrosion inhibitors or applied aqueous impregnating corrosion inhibitors into their surface, even though high chloride contents of concrete specimen.

  • The galvanic corrosion of a vessel, or systems fitted to minimize the ship's corrosion such as ICCP (Impressed Current Cathodic Protection) system and sacrificial anodes, can lead to significant electrical current flow in the sea. The presence of vessel's current sources associated with corrosion will give rise to detectable electric field surrounding the vessel and can put it at risk from mine threats. For this reason, it is necessary to design corrosion protection systems so that they don't only prevent a hull corrosion but also minimize the electric field signature. In this paper, we describe theoretical backgrounds of underwater electric field signature due to corrosion and corrosion protection system on naval vessels and analysis results of the electric field according to the ship's hull and it's propeller coating damage and ICCP anode displacement.

  • The use of cathodic protection for metals can be achieved by sacrificial anode CP or impressed current CP, or a combination of both. Cathodic protection is a highly effective anti-corrosion technique for submerged metals or metals in soil. But because the non-immersion atmospheric automobile environment is a high resistance environment, it is limited by fundamental cathodic protection. However, the application of cathodic protection to automobiles is attractive because of the possibility of maintaining corrosion resistance while using lower-cost materials. A commercially available product for automobiles that uses both sacrificial anode CP and impressed current CP was tested in a periodic salt spray environment to investigate the performance of the devices. Experimental results show that the metal to be protected has different anti-corrosion effects depending on the distance from the anode of the device, but it is effective for the entire 120 cm long specimen exposed with one anode. The cathodic protection is effective because the conductive tape attached to the anode of the structure to be protected acts as a constant electrolyte in wet and dry conditions. The results show that the entire standard passenger car can be protected by cathodic protection with 4 anodes.

  • Recently, with the tendency of more lightening, high-strength and high-speed in the marine industries such as marine structures, ships and chemical plants, the use of the aluminium Alloy is rapidly enlarge and there occurs much interest in the study of corrosion fatigue crack characteristics. In this paper, the initiation of surface crack and the propagation characteristics on the base metal and weld zone of 5086-H116 Aluminium Alloy Plate which is one of the Al-Mg serious alloy(A5000serious) used most when building the special vessels, were investigated by the plane bending corrosion fatigue under the environments of marine, air and applying cathodic protection. The effects of various specific resistances on the initiation, propagation behavior of corrosion fatigue crack and corrosion fatigue life in the base metal and heat affected zone were examined and its corrosion sensitivity was quantitatively obtained. The effects of corrosion on the crack depth in relation to the uniform surface crack length were also investigated. Also, the structural, mechanical and electro-chemical characteristics of the metal at the weld zone were inspected to verify the reasons of crack propagation behavior in the corrosion fatigue fracture. In addition, the effect of cathodic protection in the fracture surface of weld zone was examined fractographically by Scanning Electron Microscope(S.E.M.). The main results obtained are as follows; (1) The initial corrosion fatigue crack sensitibity under specific resistance of 25Ω.cm% show 2.22 in the base metal and 19.6 in the HEZ, and the sensitivity decreases as specific resistance increases (2) By removing reinforcement of weldment, the initiation and propagation of corrosion crack in the HAZ are delayed, and corrosion fatigue life increases. (3) As specific resistance decreases, the sensitivity difference of corrosion fatigue life in the base metal and HAZ is more susceptible than that of intial corrosion fatigue crack. (4) Experimental constant, m(Paris' rule) in the marine environment is in the range of about 3.69 to 4.26, and as specific resistance increases, thje magnitude of experimental constant, also increases and the effect by corrosion decreases. (5) Comparing surface crack length with crack depth, the crack depth toward the thickness of specimen in air is more deeply propagated than that in corrosion environment. (6) The propagation particulars of corrosion fatigue crack for HAZ under initial stress intensity factor range of $\Delta$k sub(li) =27.2kgf.mm super(-3/2) and stress ratio of R=0 shows the retardative phenomenon of crack propagation by the plastic deformation at crack tip. (7) Number of stress cycles to corrosion fatigue crack initiation of the base metal and the welding heat affected zone are delayed by the cathodic protection under the natural sea water. The cathodic protection effect for corrosion fatigue crack initiation is eminent when the protection potential is -1100 mV(SCE). (8) When the protection potential E=-1100 mV(SCE), the corrosion fatigue crack propagation of welding heat affected zone is more rapid than that of the case without protection, because of the microfissure caused by welding heat cycle.

  • Corrosion resistance and torque of M10 bolt coated with Magni 565 were investigated. Corrosion protection mechanism were also studied with the microstructure of coating film. The bolts with the optimum conditions showed around $10{\mu}m$ layer thickness, a great corrosion resistance in salt spray test and a proper torque in torque/tension test. But torque coefficient k increased with the number of bolting and clamping force of M10 bolt showed significantly lower than that of specified value 28.3kN. It was thought that the repeated bolting made the coating film peel off and powdery. The sample coated with optimum coating conditions showed more higher polarization resistance and corrosion potential than the specimens of top and base coat only. The base coating film was composed of lamellar zinc flakes, which provides a large sacrificial cathodic protection. Meanwhile, the top coating film was composed of organic aluminium pigments layer, which provides barrier protection to the corrosion circumstances.
