Recently, interest in using Al alloys in ship construction instead of fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) has increased because of the advantages of A) alloy ships over FRP ships, including high speed, increased load capacity. and ease of recycling. This paper investigated the mechanical and electrochemical properties of Al alloys in a slow strain rate test under various potential conditions. These results will provide reference data for ship design by determining the optimum protection potential regarding hydrogen embrittlement and stress corrosion cracking. In general, Al and Al alloys do not corrode on formation of a film that has resistance to corrosion in neutral solutions. In seawater, however, $Cl^-$ ions lead to the formation and destruction of a Passive film. In a potentiostatic experiment. the current density after 1200 sec in the Potential range of $-0.68\~-1.5\;V$ was low. This low current density indicates the protection potential range. Elongation at an applied potential of 0 V was high in this SSRT. However, corrosion protection under these conditions is impossible because the mechanical properties are worse owing to decreased strength resulting from the active dissolution reaction in parallel parts of the specimen. A film composed of $CaCO_3\;and\;Mg(OH)_2$ confers corrosion resistance. However, at potentials below -1.6 V forms non-uniform electrodeposition coating, since there is too little time to form a coating. Therefore, we concluded that the mechanical properties are poor because the effect of hydrogen gas generation exceeds that of electrodeposition. Comparison of the maximum tensile strength, elongation, and time to fracture indicated that the optimum protection potential range was from -1.45 to -0.9 V (SSCE).
The purpose of this study was to observe in vitro chloride corrosion behavior from 5 kinds of amalgam (Caulk spheracal, Amalcap, Dispersalloy, Tytin, Sybralloy) as a function of time after tritruration by using potentiostat. After each amalgam alloy and Hg was triturated as the direction of the manufacturer by the mechanical amalgamator, the triturated mass was inserted the cyrindrical matal mold ($12{\times}10mm$) and was condensed by using routine manner. The specimen was removed from the mold and was stored at room temperature for 1 week, 1 month and 3 months, and standard surface preparation was routine carried out. The 0.9% saline solution was used as electrolyte in pH 6.8~7.0 at $30{\pm}0.5.^{\circ}C$. The open circuit potential was determined after 30 minutes' immersion of 1 week, 1 month and 3 month old specimens. The scan rate was 1 mV/sec and the surface area of amalgam exposed to the solution was $0.65\;Cm^2$ for each specimen. All potentials reported are with respect to a silver / silver chloride electrode (SSE). The following result was obtained. 1. All amalgam specimens became more noble corrosion potentials which represent the improved corrosion resistance as the time elapsed. 2. Three kinds of high copper amalgam always exhibited more noble potential than low copper amalgam at 1 week, 1 month and 3 months. 3. Two kinds of low copper amalgam had the similar polarization curve pattern with 3 current peaks at each time period and current densities associated with these peaks were decreased as aging especially in caulk spherical amalgam. 4. All kinds of high copper amalgam had the similar polarization curve pattern with absence of prominent current peak at each time period, but the polarization curve of D amalgam had one apparent current peak at 1 week.
Effects of interlayer and the combination of different coating methods on the mechanical and corrosion behaviors of TiN and CrN coated on 420 stainless steel have been studied. STS 420 specimen were tempered at $300^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr in vacuum furnace. The TiN and CrN thin film with 2 ${\mu}m$ thickness were coated by arc ion plating and DC magnetron sputtering following the formation of interlayer for pure titanium and chromium with 0.2 ${\mu}m$ thickness. The microstructure and surface analysis of the specimen were conducted by using SEM, XRD and roughness tester. Mechanical properties such as hardness and adhesion also were examined. XRD patterns of TiN thin films showed that preferred TiN (111) orientation was observed. The peaks of CrN (111) and $Cr_2N$ (300) were only observed in CrN thin films deposited by arc ion plating. Both TiN and CrN deposited by arc ion plating had the higher adhesion and hardness compared to those formed by magnetron sputtering. The specimen of TiN and CrN on which interlayer deposited by magnetron sputtering and thin film deposited by arc ion plating had the highest adhesion with 22.2 N and 19.2 N. respectively. TiN and CrN samples shown the most noble corrosion potentials when the interlayers were deposited by using magnetron sputtering and the metal nitrides were deposited by using arc ion plating. The most noble corrosion potentials of TiN and CrN were found to be approximately -170 and -70 mV, respectively.

The objectives of this paper were to obtain the fundamental data to analyze the causes of deterioration of 39 freeway concrete viaducts in Seoul metropolitan area. To investigate the degree of concrete deterioration, carbonation depth, soluble chloride concentration in hardened concrete and half-cell potentials of reinforcement were measured. The number of structures which carbonation depth penetrates to reinforcement was 25% of total. The model of carbonation .ate was induced to 3.92 $\sqrt{t}$, which was 5% faster than 3.727 $\sqrt{t}$ assumed 60% water-cement ratio, R=1 in that of kishitani. After measuring chloride concentration in concrete, it was concluded that about 24% of all readings on samples from concrete exceed the critical content to minimize the risk of chloride-induced corrosion. About 31% of the freeway viaducts structures had a value lower than -350mV(vs. CSE), so it could conclude that the excessive chloride concentration was the major cause of reinforcement corrosion. Among the structures which measured half-cell potentials less than -350mV, about 50% exceeds the maximum acceptable limit of chloride concentration.
The purpose of this study was to observe characteristic properties through the polarization curves and EMPA images from 4 different types of amalgam obtained by using the potentiostats (EG & G PARC) & EPMA (Jeol JSM-35), to investigate the degree of corrosion of each phase of amalgam on the oxidation peak, and to identify corrosion products from the corroded amalgam by use of X-ray diffractometer(Rigaku). After each amlgam alloy and Hg were triturated as the direction of the manufacturer by means of the mechanical amalgamator(Shofu), the triturated mass was inserted into the cylindrical metal mold which was 12mm in diameter and 10mm in height and was condensed by means of routine manner. The specimen was removed from the mold and stored at room temperature for about 7 days. The standard surface preparation was routinely carried out. Anodic polarization measurement was employed to compare the corrosion behaviours of the amalgams in 0.9% saline solution(pH6.8~7.0) and artificial saliva (pH6.8~7.0) at $37^{\circ}C$. The open circuit potential was determined after 30 minutes' immersion of specimen in electrolyte and the potential scan was begun at the potential of 100mV cathodic from the corrosion potential. The scan rate was 1mV/sec and the surface area of amalgam exposed to the solution was 0.64$cm^2$ for each specimen. All the potentials reported are with respect to a saturated calomel electrode (SCE). EPMA images on the determined oxidation peaks of each amalgam in artificial saliva were observed. X-ray diffraction patterns of each sample were recorded before and after polarization in artificial saliva (Aristaloy, Caulk Spherical, Dispersalloy and Tytin: at +770mV, +585mV, +8.10m V and +680m V respectively) by use of a recording diffractometer. Nickel filtered Cu $K_{{\alpha}_1}$ radiation was used and sample was scanned at $4^{\circ}(2{\theta})/min.$ from $25^{\circ}$ to $80^{\circ}$. The following results were obtained. 1. Oxidation peak potential in artificial saliva shifted to more anodic direction than that in saline solution. 2. The corrosion potential of high copper amalgam was more anodic than the potential of low copper amalgam. 3. The current density was lower in artificial saliva than in saline solution. 4. One of the corrosion products, AgCl was identified by X-ray diffraction analysis. 5. ${\gamma}_2$ phase was the most susceptible to corrosion and e phase was stable in low copper amalgam and ${\eta}$' phase and Ag-Cu eutectic were susceptible to corrosion in high copper amalgam.
According to the urban gas business law, electrical corrosion prevention measures shall be installed to the buried gas pipelines and the pipe-to-soil potentials should be measured at the test box at least once a year. Most of the test boxes installed in urban area are usually located on the road where the vehicle travels, therefore, it is difficult to measure the CP potentials at the test boxes. That is, we need traffic control when carrying out the measurement of the CP potentials on daytime when the traffic is heavy, or we have to measure the potentials in the late night when the traffic is light. To solve these difficulties, we have studied remotely CP potential measuring method by using the patrol car. We have installed solid reference electrodes and data loggers under the test boxes on the site and received the CP potentials from the data loggers when the vehicle moves. It was difficult to send and receive the data because the data logger was located under the ground. We have applied 3 different method including 2 antenna systems to achieve best effective way in receiving the data. We have found the remote CP measuring method by using a car can save more 20 times of measuring time than conventional measuring methods.
In connection with the safe storage of high level nuclear waste, effect of $H_2O$$_2$ on the corrosion behavior of 304L stainless steel was examined. Open circuit potentials and polarization curves were measured with and without $H_2O$$_2$. The experimental results show that $H_2O$$_2$ increased corrosion potential and decreased pitting potential. The passive range, therefore, decreased as $H_2O$$_2$ concentration increased, indicating that pitting resistance was decreased by the existence of $H_2O$$_2$ in the electrolyte. These effect of $H_2O$$_2$ on corrosion of 304L stainless steel are considered to be similar to those of ${\gamma}$-irradiation. To compare the effects of $H_2O$$_2$ with those of $O_2$, cathodic and anodic polarization curves ore made in three types of electrolyte such as aerated, deaerated, and stirred electrolyte. The experimental results show that the effects of $H_2O$$_2$ on the corrosion behavior were tory similar to those of $O_2$ such as increase of corrosion potential, decrease of pitting resistance, and increase of repassivation potential. In acid and alkaline media, the corrosion potential shifts by $H_2O$$_2$ were restricted by the large current density of proton reduction and by the le Chatelier's principle respectively.y.

Corrosion behaviors of TiN coated dental casting alloys have been researched by using various electrochemical methods. Three casting alloys (Alloy 1: 63Co-27Cr-5.5Mo, Alloy 2: 63Ni-16Cr-5Mo, Alloy 3: 63Co-30Cr-5Mo) were prepared for fabricating partial denture frameworks with various casting methods; centrifugal casting(CF), high frequency induction casting(HFI) and vacuum pressure casting(VP). The specimens were coated with TiN film by RF-magnetron sputtering method. The corrosion behaviors were investigated using potentiostat (EG&G Co, 263A. USA) in 0.9% NaCl solution at $36.5{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. The corrosion morphologies were analyzed using FE-SEM and EDX. Alloy 1 and Alloy 2 showed the ${\alpha}-Co$ and ${\varepsilon}-Co$ phase on the matrix, and it was disappeared in case of TiN coated Alloy 1 and 2. In the Alloy 3, $Ni_2Cr$ second phases were appeared at matrix. Corrosion potentials of TiN coated alloy were higher than that of non-coated alloy, but current density at passive region of TiN coated alloy was lower than that of non-coated alloy. Pitting corrosion resistances were increased in the order of centrifugal casting, high frequency induction casting and vacuum pressure casting method from cyclic potentiodynamic polarization test.
The purpose of this study is to observe the corrosion characteristics of seven dental amalgams (CAULK FINE CUT, CAULK SPHERICAL, OPTALLOY II, DISPERSALLOY, HI VERALOY, TYTIN, VALIANT) through the anodic polarization curve obtained by using a potentiostat. After each amalgam alloy and Hg being triturated, the triturated mass was inserted into the cylindrical metal mold, and condensed by hydrolic pressure(160 kg/$cm^2$). Each specimen was removed from the metal mold. 24 hours after condensation, specimens were polished with the emery paper and stored at room temperature for 1 week. The anodic polarization curves were employed to compare the corrosion behaviours of the amalgam in 0.9% saline solution, Fusayama's artificial saliva, and stimulated parotid saliva at $37^{\circ}C$ with 3-electrode potentiostat. After the immersion of specimen in electrolyte for 1 hour, the potential scan was begun. The potential scan range was. -1700m V ~ + 400m V(vs. S. C. E) in the working electrode and the scan rate was 50m V /sec. The results were as follows, 1. The corrosion potential, the potential of anodic current peak, and transpassive potential in the stimulated parotid saliva shifted to more anodic direction than those in saline solution, and the current density in the stimulated parotid saliva was lower than that in saline solution. Those in Fusayama's artificial saliva was similar to those in stimulated parotid saliva. 2. The anodic polarization profiles in Fusayama's artificial saliva and stimulated parotid saliva indicated a region of slow slope current density, which is extending from the corrosion potential to the potential of anodic current peak, but that in 0.9% saline solution indicated no region of slow slope. 3. The corrosion potentials for CAULK FINE CUT, CAULK SPHERICAL, and OPT ALLOY II had the similarity in 0.9% saline solution, Fusayama's artificial saliva and stimulated parotid saliva, but those for high coper amalgam and VALIANT had no similarity. 4. The current density for TYTIN amalgam in stimulated parotid saliva was the lowest among the others. 5. As for current density, there was no significant difference between palladium enriched VALINAT and other high copper amalgams.

The advancement of electronics and telecommunication technologies has forced the risk management system for underground metallic structures to evolve into the remote monitoring and control system. Especially, facilities such as gas pipelines, oil pipelines and water distribution lines might make hazardous effect on human safety without continuous monitoring and control. As a result, pipeline engineers have applied cathodic protection system to prevent the degradation of their facilities by corrosion and carried out a periodic monitoring of the pipe-to-soil (P/S) potentials at numberous test boxes along their pipelines. The latter action on a road in downtowns, however, is so much dangerous that the inspectors should be ready to suffer the threatening of their lives and maintenance. In order to minimize these social costs and hazards, a stand-alone type corrosion monitoring equipment which can be installed in test box, store the P/S data for given Belied and send the data by wired/wireless telecommunications is under development. In order to obtain the exact P/S data, however, a reference electrode should be located as close to the pipeline as possible. Actually, the measured potential by a conventional portable reference electrode contain inevitably an IR drop portion caused by the current flow from the cathodic protection rectifier or the subway railroad. To minimize this error, it is recommended that the reference electrode should be buried within 10 cm from the pipeline. In this paper, we describe the design parameters for fabricating the permanent type reference electrode and the characteristics of the developed reference electrode.
