  • A pilot test was carried out to investigate the long term operation characteristics of Microfiltration (MF) system as a pretreatment for seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) processes for two years. A commercialized MF module with pressurized operation type was used to filter seawater to remove particles which can foul reverse osmosis (RO) membrane. Silt Density Index (SDI) values of filtered seawater by the MF system were ranged from 0.14 to 1.79, which meet the SDI standard for RO feed water as depicted in previous literatures. Although the tested seawater is quite clean (i.e., dissolved organic cabon (DOC) concentration and turbidity were about 1 mg/l and less than 1 NTU, respectively) enough not to foul the MF membrane, steep increase in trans-membrane pressure (TMP) with a constant flux were observed over a whole operation period. A set of operation and water analysis data implies that the steep increase in TMP was resulted from iron and maganese fouling by the combination of metal corrosion by seawater and oxidation state by aeration and residual chlorine.

  • Zirconia($ZrO_2$) has attracted much attention in science and technology because of its high refractive index, high melting temperature, hardness, low thermal conductivity and corrosion barrier properties. And it is widely used as the dental restoration material because of its esthetic appearance. In this research, we analyzed the particle size and composition of the imported dental porcelain for zirconia. And the glass frit was produced. To decrease the glass transition temperature and softening temperature of the glass frit, $Li_2O$ was added into it and the effect of $Li_2O$ on the firing temperature was researched. Then the glass which contains leucite crystal with a high coefficient of thermal expansion(CTE) was manufactured and it was mixed with the glass frit to control the CTE. The phase composition were analyzed using the X-ray diffraction. The morphologies of the samples were observed by the scanning electron microscope. The 4wt% $Li_2O$-added glass frit has the optimal glass transition temperature and softening temperature. And 6 wt% leucite crystal was mixed with the glass frit to control the CTE. From the experimental results of crystallization, the crystal phase was found only leucite crystal.

  • 16 water treatment plants(WTPs) in Jeju province were investigated to evaluate the corrosivity of tap water. In addition, the impacts of lime and carbon dioxide on LI changes at ES WTP were analyzed. The average of LI in Jeju tap was -1.78 which was similar to that of in-land multi-regional WTPs. The recommended process to improve LI of ES WTP which has high corrosivity(i.e., LI = -2.61) was to combine lime and carbon dioxide with the dosages of 20 mg/L and 5 mg/L respectively to meet LI of -1.0 ~ 0. pH was confirmed to be a major water quality parameter that determined LI based on the correlation results among LI and water quality parameters. Precaution on turbidity increase by lime addition should given to minimize particle breakthrough in the distribution system. Turbidity increase can be controlled by the addition of lime prior to filters.

  • This study was performed to investigate the efficiency of the corrosion prevention in the simulated distribution system using CCPP(Calcium Carbonate Precipitation Potential) as the anti-corrosive index by adjusting pH, total dissolved solids, alkalinity and calcium hardness in the water treatment pilot process. The materials of the simulated distribution system(SDS) were equiped with same materials of real field water distribution system. CCPP concentrations controlled by $Ca(OH)_2$, $CO_2$ gas and $Na_2CO_3$ in the simulated distribution system and uncontrolled by the chemicals in the general water distribution system were average 0.61 mg/L and -7.77 mg/L. The concentrations of heavy metals like Fe, Zn, Cu ions in effluent water of the simulated distribution system controlled with water quality were decreased rather than the general water distribution system uncontrolled with water quality. In simulated distribution system(SDS), corrosion prevention film formed by CCPP control was observed that scale was come into forming six months later and it was formed into density as time goes on. We were analyzed XRD(X-ray diffraction) for investigating component of crystal compounds and structure for galvanized steel pipe(15 mm). Finding on analysis, scale was compounded to $Zn_4CO_3(OH)_6{\cdot}H_2O$ (Zinc Carbonate Hydroxide Hydrate) after ten months late, and it was compounded on $CaCO_3$(Calcium Carbonate) and $ZnCO_3$(Smithsonite) after nineteen months later.

  • A field investigation was conducted on an aquifer contaminated with trichloroethylene (TCE) for application of in situ reactive zone treatment using nanosized zero-valent iron (NZVI). The aquifer was an unconfined aquifer with a mean hydraulic conductivity of $5.14{\times}10^{-4}cm/sec$, which would be favorable for NZVI injection. Seasonal monitoring of TCE concentration revealed a presence of non-aqueous phase liquid form of TCE near IW (injection well). The hydrochemical data characterized the site groundwater to be a $Ca-HCO_3$ type. The average value of Langelier Saturation Index of the groundwater was -1.33, which implied that the site was favorable for corrosion of NZVI. Dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration varied between 2.5~11.5 mg/L, which indicated that DO would greatly compete with TCE as an electron acceptor. The hydrogeological and hydrochemical characterization reveals that the time around November would be appropriate for NZVI injection when water level and temperature are relatively high and DO concentration is low.

  • The infrastructures such as offshore, bridges, power plant, oil and gas piping and aircraft operate in a harsh environment during their service life. Structural integrity of engineering components used in these industries is paramount for the reliability and economics of operation. Two regression models based on the concept of Gaussian process regression (GPR) and Minimax probability machine regression (MPMR) were developed to predict stress intensity factor range (𝚫K). Both GPR and MPMR are in the frame work of probability distribution. Models were developed by using the fatigue crack growth data in MATLAB by appropriately modifying the tools. Fatigue crack growth experiments were carried out on Eccentrically-loaded Single Edge notch Tension (ESE(T)) specimens made of API 5L X65 Grade steel in inert and corrosive environments (2.0% and 3.5% NaCl). The experiments were carried out under constant amplitude cyclic loading with a stress ratio of 0.1 and 5.0 Hz frequency (inert environment), 0.5 Hz frequency (corrosive environment). Crack growth rate (da/dN) and stress intensity factor range (𝚫K) values were evaluated at incremental values of loading cycle and crack length. About 70 to 75% of the data has been used for training and the remaining for validation of the models. It is observed that the predicted SIF range is in good agreement with the corresponding experimental observations. Further, the performance of the models was assessed with several statistical parameters, namely, Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Coefficient of Efficiency (E), Root Mean Square Error to Observation's Standard Deviation Ratio (RSR), Normalized Mean Bias Error (NMBE), Performance Index (ρ) and Variance Account Factor (VAF).

  • With deterioration of the nation's infrastructure comes the growing, need for effective means of rehabilitating structures. Possibly one for the most challenging tasks is to upgrade the overall capacity of concrete structure. Therefore, considerable efforts are still being made to develop new construction materials. Rehabilitation of damaged RC structures occasionally requires the removal and replacement of concrete in the tension zone of the structural members. Typical situation where the tension zone repair is necessary is when the concrete in the tension zone in beams or slabs has spalled off as a result of corrosion in the bottom reinforcing bars or due to extensive fire. The rehabilitation of such conditions normally involves the removal of the concrete beyond the reinforcement bars, cleaning or replacing the tensile bars and reinstatement of concrete to cover the steel bars the original shape and size. This study focused on the flexural behavior of reinforced concrete beams strengthened by steel strand and carbon fiber sheet in the tension zone. The properties of beams are 15$\times$25 cm rectangular and over a 200cm span. Test parameters in this experimental study were strengthening methods, jacking volume, the number of sheet. We investigated the flexural behavior of simply supported RC beams which are strengthened with the carbon fiber sheet, monotonic loads. Attention is concentrated upon overall bending capacity, deflection, ductility index, failure mode and crack development of repaired and rehabilitated beams.

  • The fabrication process of thin boron-doped nanocrystalline diamond (B-NCD) microelectrodes on fused silica single mode optical fiber cladding has been investigated. The B-NCD films were deposited on the fibers using Microwave Plasma Assisted Chemical Vapor Deposition (MW PA CVD) at glass substrate temperature of 475 ℃. We have obtained homogenous, continuous and polycrystalline surface morphology with high sp3 content in B-NCD films and mean grain size in the range of 100-250 nm. The films deposited on the glass reference samples exhibit high refractive index (n=2.05 at λ=550 nm) and low extinction coefficient. Furthermore, cyclic voltammograms (CV) were recorded to determine the electrochemical window and reaction reversibility at the B-NCD fiber-based electrode. CV measurements in aqueous media consisting of 5 mM K3[Fe(CN)6] in 0.5 M Na2SO4 demonstrated a width of the electrochemical window up to 1.03 V and relatively fast kinetics expressed by a redox peak splitting below 500 mV. Moreover, thanks to high-n B-NCD overlay, the coated fibers can be also used for enhancing the sensitivity of long-period gratings (LPGs) induced in the fiber. The LPG is capable of measuring variations in refractive index of the surrounding liquid by tracing the shift in resonance appearing in the transmitted spectrum. Possible combined CV and LPG-based measurements are discussed in this work.
