Plasma nitriding of stainless steels has been investigated over a range of temperature from 400 to $500^{\circ}C$ and time from 10 to 20 hours. Characterization of systematic materials was carried out in terms of mechanical properties and corrosion behaviors. The results showed that plasma nitriding conducted at low temperatures not only increased the surface hardness, but also improved the corrosion resistance of STS 316L, STS409L, and STS 420J2. It was found that plasma-nitriding treatment at $500^{\circ}C$ resulted in increasing the corrosion performance of STS 409L and STS 420J2, while STS 316L was observed with server and massive damage on surface due to the formation of CrN.
The large and high-speed vessels have been greatly advanced, but ship materials have been caused the problem such as corrosion, cavitation and erosion. Cavitation can produce material damage such as pumps, turbines, valves and ship propellers etc. To solve these problems, the cavitation and electrochemical characteristics for thermal spray coating and the sealing are executed to obtain the excellent corrosion protection characteristics in sea water environment.

The correlation between sensor output and corrosion rate of reinforcing steel was evaluated by laboratory electrochemical tests in saturated $Ca(OH)_2$ with 3.5 wt.% NaCl and confirmed in concrete environment. In this paper, two types of electrochemical probes were developed: galvanic cells containing of steel/copper and steel/stainless steel couples. Potentiodynamic test, weight loss measurement, monitoring of open-circuit potential, linear polarization resistance (LPR) measurement and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were used to evaluate the corrosion behavior of steel bar embedded in concrete. Also, galvanic current measurements were conducted to obtain the charge of sensor embedded in concrete. In this study, steel/copper and steel/stainless steel sensors showed a good correlation in simulated concrete solution between sensor output and corrosion rate of steel bar. However, there was no linear relationship between steel/stainless steel sensor output and corrosion rate of steel bar in concrete environment due to the low galvanic current output. Thus, steel/copper sensor is a reliable corrosion monitoring sensor system which can detect corrosion rate of reinforcing steel in concrete structures.
Because austenitic stainless steel causes localized corrosion such as pitting and crevice corrosion in environments containing chlorine, corrosion resistance is improved by surface treatment or changes of the alloy element content. Accordingly, research using cyclic potentiodynamic polarization experiment to evaluate the properties of the passivation film of super austenitic stainless steel that improved corrosion resistance is being actively conducted. In this investigation, the electrochemical properties of austenitic stainless steel and super austenitic stainless steel were compared and analyzed through cyclic potentiodynamic polarization experiment with varying temperatures. Repassivation properties were not observed in austenitic stainless steels at all temperature conditions, but super austenitic stainless steels exhibited repassivation behaviors at all temperatures. This is expressed as α values using a relational formula comparing the localized corrosion rate and general corrosion rate. As the α values of UNS S31603 decreased with temperature, the tendency of general corrosion was expected to be higher, and the α value of UNS N08367 increased with increasing temperatures, so it is considered that the tendency of localized corrosion was dominant.

The modeling of loss of bond between reinforcing bars (rebars) and concrete due to corrosion is useful in studying the behavior and prediction of residual load bearing capacity of corroded reinforced concrete (RC) members. In the present work, first the possibility of using different methods to simulate the rebars-concrete bonding, which is used in three-dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) modeling of corroded RC beams, was explored. The cohesive surface interaction method was found to be most suitable for simulating the bond between rebars and concrete. Secondly, using the cohesive surface interaction approach, the 3D FE modeling of the behavior of non-corroded and corroded RC beams was carried out in an ABAQUS environment. Experimental data, reported in literature, were used to validate the models. Then using the developed models, a parametric study was conducted to examine the effects of some parameters, such as degree and location of the corrosion, on the behavior and residual capacity of the corroded beams. The results obtained from the parametric analysis using the developed model showed that corrosion in top compression rebars has very small effect on the flexural behaviors of beams with small flexural reinforcement ratio that is less than the maximum ratio specified in ACI-318-14 (singly RC beam). In addition, the reduction of steel yield strength in tension reinforcement due to corrosion is the main source of reducing the load bearing capacity of corroded RC beams. The most critical corrosion-induced damage is the complete loss of bond between rebars and the concrete as it causes sudden failure and the beam acts as un-reinforced beam.

Experiments and a numerical simulation were conducted to investigate the deformation and impact behavior of a corroded pipe, as corrosion, fatigue, and collision phenomena frequently occur in subsea pipelines. This study focuses on the deformation of the corrosion region and the variation of the geometry of the pipe under impact loading. The experiments for the impact behavior of the corroded pipe were performed using an impact test apparatus to validate the results of the simulation. In addition, during the simulation, material tests were performed, and the results were applied to the simulation. The ABAQUS explicit finite element analysis program was used to perform numerical simulations for the parametric study, as well as experiment scenarios, to investigate the effects of defects under impact loading. In addition, the modified ASME B31.8 code formula was proposed to define the damage range for the dented pipe.
In this paper, various electrochemical experiments were conducted in seawater solution to evaluate corrosion damage behavior of arc thermal sprayed Inconel 625 coating on SS400 steel in marine environment. As a result, corrosion damages of thermal sprayed Inconel 625 coating preferentially occurred at the defect area, and they were observed as a form of pitting corrosion in the galvanostatic experiments. In Tafel analysis, corrosion current density of Inconel 625 coating was relatively high due to influence of interconnected pores and Cr oxides in the thermal spray coating layer. On the other hand, the result of the potential measurement, thermal sprayed Inconel 625 coating should need the post-treatment which can compensate the defects like pores and cracks because Inconel 625 coating presented a higher potential of about 290 mV than that of the SS400 steel.
In this study, we conduct fretting corrosion tests on tin-plated brass coupons to investigate the effect of temperature on fretting corrosion for various span amplitudes. We prepare a coupled fretting corrosion specimens using a tin-plated brass coupon with a thickness of $10{\mu}m$. One specimen is a flat coupon and the other specimen is a coupon with a protuberance in 1 mm radius, which is produced using 2 mm diameter steel ball. We conduct fretting corrosion tests at $25^{\circ}C$, $50^{\circ}C$, $75^{\circ}C$, $100^{\circ}C$ by rubbing the coupled coupons together at the contact between the flat and protuberance coupons. We measure electric resistance of the contact during the fretting corrosion test period. There is increase in resistance with fretting cycles. It is found that rate of increase in electric resistance becomes faster with increase in testing temperature. Magnitude of friction coefficient increases with fretting span amplitudes. And, change in friction coefficient becomes desensitized to the increment in span amplitude. Assuming that failure cycle is the cycle with an electric resistance of $0.01{\Omega}$, we find that failure lifetime ($N_f$) decreases with increase in testing temperature. Furthermore, based on the assumption that the damage rate of the connector is inversely related to the failure cycle, we calculate the activation energy for fretting damage to be 13.6 kJ/mole by using the Arrhenius equation. We propose a method to predict failure cycle at different temperatures for span amplitudes below $30{\mu}m$. Friction coefficients generally increase with increase in span amplitude and decrease in testing temperature.
Metallic glasses are amorphous meta-stable solids and are now being processed in bulk form suitable for structural applications including impact. Bulk metallic glasses have many unique mechanical properties such as high yield strength and fracture toughness, good corrosion and wear resistance that distinguish them from crystalline metals and alloys. However, only a few studies could be found mentioning the dynamic response and damage of metallic glasses under impact or shock loading. In this study, we employed a small explosive detonator for the dynamic indentation on a Zr-based bulk amorphous metal in order to evaluate the damage behavior of bulk amorphous metal under impact loading. These results were compared with those of spherical indentation under quasi-static and impact loading. The interface bonded specimens were adopted to observe the appearances of subsurface damage induced during indentation under different loading conditions.
