  • The compressive residual stress, which is induced by shot peening process, has the effect of increasing the intrinsic fatigue strength of surface and therefore would be beneficial in reducing the probability of fatigue damage. However, the effect of shot peening in corrosion environment was not known. In this study, investigated is the effect of shot peening on corrosion fatigue crack growth of SAE 5155 steel immersed in 6% $FeCl_3$ solution and corrosion characteristics with considering fracture mechanics. The results of the experimental study corrosion fatigue characteristics of SAE 5155 are as follows; the fatigue crack growth rate of the shot peening material was lower than that of the non-peening material. And fatigue life shows more improvement in the shot peening material than in non-peening material. This is due to the compressive residual stress of surface increases resistance of corrosion fatigue crack propagation. It is assumed that the shot peening process improve corrosive resistance and mechanical property.

  • Recently with the rapid development in marine and shipbuilding industries such as marine structures, ships and chemical plants, it takes much interest in the study of corrosion fatigue characteristics that was close up an important role in mechanical design. In this study, characteristics of corner crack propagation on the base metal and heat affected zone of 5086 Al-Alloy was tested by using of a rotary bending fatigue tester and was investigated under the environments of specific resistance, $\rho$=25$\Omega$ cm and air. The corrosion fatigue crack initiation and corrosion fatigue life sensitivity were quantitatively inspected for 5086 Al-Alloy in the specific resistance, $\rho$=25$\Omega$ cm. Main results obtained are as follows: (1) The corrosion sensitivity of heat affected zone under specific resistance, $\rho$=25$\Omega$cm shows approximately 1.69~2.22 and corrosion sensitivity of base metal is more susceptible than that of heat affected zone. (2) The corrosion fatigue life sensitivity on heat affected zone decreases eminently than that of initial corrosion fatigue crack. (3) The characteristics of quarter elliptical corner crack propagation shows that depth crack is more grown than surface crack at crack initiation, but the surface crack is more propagated than depth crack as the crack propagation is increased. (4) The surface crack and depth crack growth on heat affected zone by softness show delayed phenomenon than that of base metal.

  • The fatigue life of steel wire is affected not only by fatigue load, but also by corrosion environment in service period. Specially, the corrosion pit will lead to stress concentration on the surface of steel wire inducing the formation of fatigue cracks, and the fatigue cracks will accelerate the corrosion process. Therefore, the corrosion fatigue of steel wire is a coupling effect. In this study, the corrosion-fatigue coupling life curve is derived with considering corrosion-fatigue pitting stage, corrosion-fatigue short crack stage and corrosion-fatigue long crack stage. In addition, the stress concentration factors of different corrosion pits are calculated by COMSOL software. Furthermore, the effect of corrosion environment factors, that is, corrosion rate, corrosion pit morphology, frequency and action factor of fatigue load, on fatigue life of steel wire is analyzed. And then, the corrosion-fatigue coupling life curve is compared with the fatigue life curve and fatigue life curve with pre-corrosion. The result showed that the anti-fatigue performance of the steel wire with considering corrosion-fatigue coupling is 68.08% and 41.79% lower than fatigue life curve and fatigue life curve with pre-corrosion. Therefore, the corrosion-fatigue coupling effect should be considered in the design of steel wire.

  • Fatigue crack growth behaviour of Ti-6A-4V alloy is investigated in air and salt solution environment at room temperature and $200^{\circ}C$. Fatigue crack growth rate is blown to be fast for the formation of corrosive product in hot salt environment. For the effect on corrosion fatigue crack growth behaviour of region II. fatigue crack growth rate in atmosphere had a little gap to both case, $200^{\circ}C$ and room temperature. However, it showed very fast tendency in salt corrosive atmosphere, and it was remarkably accelerated in $200^{\circ}C$ temperature salt environment. When $\Delta$K was approximately 30MPa(equation omitted), fatigue crack growth rate had a little difference between at room temperature and at $200^{\circ}C$ high temperature, however in case of salt corrosive environment the room temperature was 3.5 times Inter and $200^{\circ}C$ high temperature for 16 times than air environment respectively.

  • The effects of PWHT (poste weld heat treatment) and stress simulating the residual stress during PWHT in weld HAZ of low and high strength steels on corrosion fatigue crack growth were evaluated. The obtained results are summarized as follows. 1. Fatigue crack growth rate of HAZ in air and 3.5% NaCl solution was slower than that of parent due to the signgularity in weld HAZ. 2. In the case of HT-80, 3.5% NaCl solutio nacts to accelerate the crack growth for all specimens, and the sensitivity of as-weld to corrosion environment was the greatest among other PWHT specimens. 3. Corrosion fatigue crack growth of parent, as-weld and PWHT speciments ofr SS41 as well as SM53B was retarded in comparison with the fatigue crack growth in air. 4. There was a tendency that crack growth of PWHT specimens subjected $10kg/mm^2$ was faster than that of PWHT specimens without stress during PWHT. 5. The retardation phenomenon of crack growth in corrosion environment is attributed to the crack branching decreased .DELTA.K due to the corrosion products and multi-cracks.

  • To examine the effect of acid fog on the corrosion fatigue behavior in structural steel, fatigue tests under acid fog atmosphere were carried out in comparison with distilled water. The corrosive c omponents contained in acid fog pile up the corrosion products on crack face and show a crack branching and crack tip blunting. Therefore, due to these workings crack growth rate was reduced by decreasing the effective stress range in crack tip rather than under distilled water. Also the effect of sulfuric acid, which is the main component of acid fog, and testing speed on fatigue crack growth were examined. It was found that corrosion behavior was remarkably dependent upon pH and Hz rather than components of acid fog. According as pH and testing speed decrease below a specific value, crack growth was accelerated in comparison with distilled water. This reveals that due to liquid having strong acidity and slow speed of test the crack face dissolution was promoted, so crack closure was disturbed in the process of stress descent.

  • A study has been made of the corrosion fatigue of high strength low alloy steel in 3.5% NaCl solution under tension stress for solution temperature being 25.deg. C, 55.deg. C and 85 .deg. C. The main results obtained are as follows; 1) The corrosion fatigue crack growth rate curve could be divided into the First Region, the Second Region and the Third Region. 2) The corrosion fatigue crack growth rates in the First Region and the Second Region were Arrhenius temperature-dependent in this test range. The apparent activation energies for the corrosion fatigue cack growth rate were found to be 2000cal/mol in the First Region and 3700 cal/mol in the Second Region. 3) Hematite (Fe$_{2}$O$_{3}$) as the hexahedral crystal and magnetite (Fe$_{3}$O$_{4}$) as the octahedral crystal were observed in the corrosion products on the corrosion fatigue fracture surface at 85.deg. C and the anode fusion seem to be generated in the crack tip region at high temperature. 4) The complex environment effect ratio which was defined by the ratio of fatigue crack growth rate in corrosion environment to that in air might be considered not only a criterion estimating the effect of environment quantitatively but also an important parameter in the selection of the design stress for the fail safe design. The complex environment effect was not greater than ten in this test.
