  • Experiments and a numerical simulation were conducted to investigate the deformation and impact behavior of a corroded pipe, as corrosion, fatigue, and collision phenomena frequently occur in subsea pipelines. This study focuses on the deformation of the corrosion region and the variation of the geometry of the pipe under impact loading. The experiments for the impact behavior of the corroded pipe were performed using an impact test apparatus to validate the results of the simulation. In addition, during the simulation, material tests were performed, and the results were applied to the simulation. The ABAQUS explicit finite element analysis program was used to perform numerical simulations for the parametric study, as well as experiment scenarios, to investigate the effects of defects under impact loading. In addition, the modified ASME B31.8 code formula was proposed to define the damage range for the dented pipe.

  • Ti-6Al-4V alloy has been widely used for aerospace and power generation applications because of low density and attractive mechanical and corrosion resistant properties. However, the titanium alloy bolt is generally manufactured by cutting and rolling because of their poor workability. In order to achieve the mass production of titanium alloy bolts, it needs to be solved some manufacturing problems such as the sticking between workpiece and dies, the formation of the forming defects during the forging and so on. In this study, the manufacturing technology of titanium alloy bolts using warm forging process was introduced. The aim of present work is to develop a warm forging technology for high strength Ti-6Al-4V bolts.

  • Major cause of defects in steam generator tubes at nuclear power plant is the accumulation of magnetite and other byproducts of corrosion in the crevice gap between support plates and tubes. Since damaged tubes result in contamination of the secondary coolant by the radioactive primary coolant, they represent a safety hazard. Early detection of magnetite buildup is, therefore, imperative in order to take remedial measures such as chemical flushing. Although the eddy current testing is being used for the inspection of steam generator tubes, the interpretation of resulting signals is generally a difficult task. This paper uses the phase of sensor coil emf as the test signal to find a way of easier signal interpretation. Numerical study using FEM shows that the shape of resulting signal is good for identifying the relative position of the probe to the support plate, and for discreminating the different shapes and degrees of magnetite buildup in the crevice gap region.

  • The weldability of aluminum is excel lent but weld metal is subject to include weld defects such as porosities, crack, incomplete penetration and incomplete fusion because of improper welding parameters. Especially, the porosities are main weld defects because the difference of hydrogen solubility change in melt ins and solidification state with temperature changing. Deformation of aluminum is larger than mi Id steel due to higher thermal conductivity. It is reported that porosities in deposited metal affect tensile strength and elongation. Therefore, the effect of groove angle on porosities and mechanical properties of weld metal were researched in this report where Al-5083 plate was used with 5356 filler metal that are excellent anti corrosion and strength.

  • Ultrasonic guided waves are gaining increasing attention for the inspection of platelike and rodlike structures. At the same time, inspection methods that do not require contact with the test piece are being developed for advanced applications. This paper capitalizes on recent advances in the areas of guided wave ultrasonics and noncontact ultrasonics to demonstrate a superior method for the nondestructive detection of thinning defects simulating hidden corrosion in thin aluminum plates. The proposed approach uses EMAT(electro-magnetic acoustic transducer) for the noncontact generation and detection of guided plate waves. Interesting features in the dispersive behavior of selected guided modes are used for the detection of plate thinning. It is shown that mode cutoff measurements provide a qualitative detection of thinning defects. Measurement of the mode group velocity can be also used to quantify of thinning depth.

  • The skinpassing conditions such as roll type, roll force and roll roughness of the work roll were evaluated to give the surface properties of the galvanized steel sheets that were required for automotive and to get rid of the surface defects that caused with the bad control of galvanized coating process parameters. The surface defects of the galvanized steel sheets such as the ripple mark and the scratch were completely removed as the roll force of SPM work roll was increased and the amount of the transfer of roll surface texture to the strip was also gained a lot. The image clarity of electro discharge textured (EDT) coated steel sheets before and after painting was higher than that of the bright (BRT) and shot blasted (SBT) coated steel sheets because of higher PPI value, lower waviness and uniform surface pattern. Since micro-craters transferred on the surface of the galvanized steel sheets played a role of nucleation sites of chromate reaction, Increase of micro-craters was bring to better corrosion resistance with the increase of the roll force and the use of EDT roll at the skin pass mill.

  • Recently, with rapid increase of gas demand, there occurs much interest their security of safety in the gas storage tanks and pressure vessels etc. In order to solve the problems, the occurrence of corrosion fatigue crack and the propagation behavior must be investigated. Especially the occurrence of corrosion fatigue crack and the propagation behavior in the part which has concentrated stress or defects, must be studied more carefully. In this paper, the high-tensile steel of SPV 50 which is much used for building the LPG storage tanks was tested by the use of a plane bending corrosion fatigue tester under the various marine environment and in the air. These experiments were carried out to investigate the surface crack propagation behavior, the value of experimental constant for Paris' rule(da/dN=$C(K)^m$), the crack depth propagation rate and the accelerative factor of the surface crack propagation rate. The main results obtained are as follows ; 1) As the specific resistances of marine environment decreases, the exponential value of slope m of Paris' rule(da/dN=$C(K)^m$) decreases and the value of intercept C increases. 2) The surface crack propagation rate and the crack depth propagation rate are delayed, as the specific resistances of marine environment is increased. 3) The accelerative factor of the surface crack propagation rate by corrosion fatigue is higher, according as the stress intensity factor range ${\Delta}K_A$ is small.

  • On this study, I constructed the reflective acoustic signal detecting system using 15MHz acoustic transducer. The most difficult problems discriminating the characteristics of the metal substance are the discriminating the corrosion state and seeking hidden defects by using none destructive testing. For solving these problems, at first, theoretic analysis has been proceeded on the acoustic V(z) characteristics which is very important on discriminating the material characteristics. For application the V(z) theory to discriminating corrosion state, the 100 and 500 won metal coins which are issued on the different years are used as the test samples. The experimental results showed the distinct differences among the coin's acoustic signals accorded to its issued years. I catched the common regulation by analysing the acquisited acoustic signals and convinced this technique to be very useful on corrosion discrimination of the metal substances by none destructive testing and also can be used to inspect on the aeronautical materials for safety navigation.

  • In this work, it is aimed to develop the fabrication method of axial stress corrosion cracking (SCC) defects having various sizes, on the outer diameter surface of the steam generator (SG) tubings. To control the length of the artificial SCC defect, the specific area of the SG tubing samples was exposed to an acidic solution after a sensitization heat treatment. During the exposure to an acidic solution, a direct current potential drop (DCPD) method was adopted to monitor the crack depth. The size of the SCC defect was first evaluated by an eddy current test (ECT), and then confirmed by a destructive examination. From the comparison, it was found that the actual crack length was well controlled to be similar to the length of the surface exposed to an acidic solution (5, 10, 20 or 30 mm in this work) with small standard deviation. From in-situ monitoring of the crack depth using the DCPD method, it was possible to distinguish a non-through wall crack from a through wall crack, even though the depth of the non-through wall crack was not able to be precisely controlled. The fabrication method established in this work was useful to simulate the SCC defect having similar size and ECT signals as compared to the field cracks in the SG tubings of the operating Korean PWRs.

  • Magnetic flux leakage (MFL) pigs are traditionally used for the detection of gross corrosion on steel pipelines used for the transmission of natural gas. Alternative nondestructive evaluation (NDE) modalities are required for the detection of stress corrosion cracking (SCC) which tends to exist in colonies oriented axially along the length of the pipeline. This paper describes the use of multiphase rotating magnetic fields in the remote region of the probe as a possible SCC detection mechanism. Details of a prototype pig and test rig are given and the challenges associated with the finite element modeling of the device are discussed. Initial experimental results show that this novel NDE modality is sensitive to axially oriented tight cracks.
