  • Regardless of the carbonation of concrete is one of the importants causes of corrosion of reinforing steel in concrete with the cloride attack and the frost damage, the investigacion about the carbonation of concrete is limited and each investigator experiments under different condition. In this paper, the effect of temperature, relative humidity, concentration of $CO_2$, type of specimen, etc., were investigated according to the accelerated carbonation test. The principal conclusions from this research were as follows: 1) The carbonation of concrete is higher in olden of, under environmental condition(temperature-relative humidity, concentration of $CO_2$, ) of 40-40-10>40-50-10>40-60-5>20-60-5. 2) Under same environmental condition, the carbonation of concrete in $\Phi$10$\times$20cm cylinder specimen is 2-8% higher then 10$\times$10$\times$40cm specimen.

  • Failure assessment of steam generator tube are very important for the integrity of energy plants. In pipes of energy plants, sometimes, the local wall thinning may result from severe erosion-corrosion damage. Recently, the effects of local wall thinning on fracture strength and fracture behavior of piping system have been well studied. In this paper, the elasto-plastic analysis is performed by FE code ANSIS on steam generator tube with wall thinning. We evaluated the failure mode, fracture strength and fracture behavior from FE analysis. It was possible to predict the crack initiation point by estimating true fracture ductility under multi-axial stress conditions at the center of the thinned area.

  • Concrete structures are becoming larger, higher, longer and more specialized. Currently, one of the biggest problems of concrete structures is the occurrence of cracks. Cracks are a serious structural problem that decreases durability and causes external damage leading to corrosion. The specimen without steel fiber fractured between 60-70% of the static ultimate strength (the fatigue strength to one million cycles on the number of cycles from the S-N curve was 73.7% and the fatigue strength to two million cycles was approximately 67.2%). The specimen with steel fiber fractured at 65-80% of the static ultimate strength, concluding fatigue strength to one million cycles around 74.6% and to two million cycles around 75%.

  • There has been recent demand for extending the life of age-degraded structures and equipment by such techniques as diagnosis, maintenance, safety assessment, and estimating residual life on iron-making plants and hydraulic, thermal, and nuclear power plants. These techniques take into account comprehensive scenarios that may cause malfunction and structural damage and allow an assessment of risk based on the likely scenarios. In particular the safety assessment and residual life estimation of age-degraded ships and equipment facilities require consideration of various factors such as mechanical and thermal stresses, corrosion, hardness, load variation due to changes of operating condition, crack generation and strength reduction of material by fatigue. In this study, a detail thermal stress analysis, one of useful techniques of safety assessment and maintenance, is performed on a blast furnace by using general FEM code (MSC/NASTRAN).

  • Nuclear power plant structures may be exposed to aggressive environmental effects that may cause their damage mechanisms are reasonably well understood and quantitative evaluation of their effects on time-dependent structural behavior is possible in some instances, such evaluations are generally very difficult and remain novel. The assessment of existing steel containment in nuclear power plants for continued service must provide quantitative evidence that they are able to withstand future extreme loads during a service period with an acceptable level of reliability. Rational methodologies to perform the reliability assessment can be developed from mechanistic models of structural deterioration, using time-dependent structural reliability analysis to take loading and strength uncertainties into account. The final goal of this study is to develop the analysis method for the analysis for the reliability of containment structures. The cause and mechanism of corrosion is first clarified and the reliability assessment method has been established. By introducing the equivalent normal distribution, the procedure of reliability analysis which can determine the failure probabilities has been established.

  • It is known that chloride ion in concrete destroys the passive film of reinforcement inside concrete and accelerates corrosion which is the most influencing factor to durability of concrete structures. In this thesis, a chloride ion diffusion model for blast furnace slag(BFS) concrete, which has better resistance to both damage due to salt and chloride ion penetration than ordinary portland cement concrete, is proposed by modifying existing model of normal concrete. Proposed model is verified by comparing diffusion analysis results with both results by indoor chloride penetration test for specimens and field test results for actual RC bridge pier. Also, the optimum resistance condition to chloride penetration is obtained according to degrees of fineness and replacement ratios of BFS concrete. As a result, resistance to chloride ion penetration for BFS concrete is more affected by replacement ratio than degree of fineness.

  • Recently, the deterioration of concrete structures have been increased by the damage from salt, carbonization, freezing & thawing and the others. Reinforcement corrosion is the principal cause of deterioration of reinforced concrete. Unfortunately, full bond is assumed in all existing shear models, a condition which is often not fulfilled when assessing damaged structures. It is therefore very important to increase the understanding of how reduced bond influences the load carying capacity particularly for shear. Therefore in this study an equation is proposed to evaluate the residual shear strength considered deterioration.

  • The durability of concrete is decreased by various deterioration factors such as a crack, spalling, corrosion. Many repair and rehabilitation methods have been introduced to extend service life of RC structure. An application of coating material is one of repair and rehabilitation methods. However, there is a problem due to reduction of bonding strength and damage of coating material in the case of existed coating material. Thus, this paper is aim to investigate the chloride resistance according to application method of coating material which improve the existed problem. According to the results, it is showed that application of coating material reduces diffusion of chloride into concrete. In special, application of MMA polymer showed the best resistance for chloride attack. However, variation of application method and number of times has a minor effect on chloride diffusion.

  • In case of earth-covered storage, the condensation occurs on surface of wall and stores in summer with high humidity because of low temperature of constructional mass. Therefore, the preventive plans should be considered to protect stores from the damage by corrosion in earth-covered storages. This study aims to suggest the methods of forced ventilation by the air, to solve the problems of construction's surface condensation at the Magazine of igloo type which is similar to earth-covered storages. A fan was installed at the air outlet for exhaust gas to conduct forced ventilation. The surface and indoor temperature were measured, and then the influence of those on condensation was analyzed. The results of this research are follows; 1) Forced ventilation by a fan affects the rise in surface temperature of walls and stores. 2) The condensation on surface of walls and stores was reduced after operating a fan.

  • Fracture behaviors of pipes with local wall thinning is very important for the integrity of nuclear power plant. In pipes of energy plants, sometimes, the local wall thinning may result from severe drosion-corrosion damage. However, effect of local wall thinning on strength and fracture behaviors of piping system were not well studied. In this paper, the monotonic bending tests were performed of full-scale carbon steel pipes with local wall thinning. A monotonic bending load was applied to straight pipe specimens by four-point loading at ambient temperature without internal pressure. From the tests, fracture behaviors and fracture strength of locally thinned pipe were manifested systematically. The observed failure modes were divided into four types; ovalization, ovalization+cracking, local buckling and local buckling+cracking. Also, maximum load was successfully evaluated.
