  • The critical condition of the onset of buoyancy-driven convective motion of uniformly heated horizontal fluid layer was analysed by the propagation theory which transforms the disturbance quantities similarly. The dimensionless critical time, $\tau$$\sub$c/, is obtained as a function of the Rayleigh number and the Prandtl number. Based on the stability criteria and the boundary-layer instability model, a new heat transfer correlation which can cover whole range of Rayleigh number was derived. Our theoretical results predict the experimental results quite reasonably.

  • Caco-2 is a cell line derived from the human colon adenocarcinoma and often used as a model for studying intestinal drug absorption. It has been well-known that a strong correlation holds between in vitro permeability across Caco-2 cell monolayers and in vivo bioavailability for various drugs. but the correlation curves varied depending on laboratories. The permeabilities of drugs across Caco-2 cell monolayers have been measured under different agitation conditions. (omitted)

  • In this paper, we compare the classification performance of both data fusion and clustering algorithms (Data Bagging, Variable Selection Bagging, Parameter Combining, Clustering) to logistic regression in consideration of various characteristics of input data. Four factors used to simulate the logistic model are (1) correlation among input variables (2) variance of observation (3) training data size and (4) input-output function. Since the relationship between input & output is not typically known, we use Taguchi design to improve the practicality of our study results by letting it as a noise factor. Experimental study results indicate the following: Clustering based logistic regression turns out to provide the highest classification accuracy when input variables are weakly correlated and the variance of data is high. When there is high correlation among input variables, variable bagging performs better than logistic regression. When there is strong correlation among input variables and high variance between observations, bagging appears to be marginally better than logistic regression but was not significant.

  • The paper explores the potential of Support Vector Machines (SVM) approach in predicting 28-day compressive strength and slump flow of self-compacting concrete. Total of 80 data collected from the exiting literature were used in present work. To compare the performance of the technique, prediction was also done using a back propagation neural network model. For this data-set, RBF kernel worked well in comparison to polynomial kernel based support vector machines and provide a root mean square error of 4.688 (MPa) (correlation coefficient=0.942) for 28-day compressive strength prediction and a root mean square error of 7.825 cm (correlation coefficient=0.931) for slump flow. Results obtained for RMSE and correlation coefficient suggested a comparable performance by Support Vector Machine approach to neural network approach for both 28-day compressive strength and slump flow prediction.

  • For combating multipath fading in wireless radio environment, diversity schemes is useful. In this paper, for performance improvement of polarization diversity system, we analyzed a two-branch polarization diversity at the receiving end of a mobile link when the transmitter emits a circularly polarized wave. And In order to calculate the correlation coefficient considering the XPD(cross polarization discrimination) between the received signals for the two diversity branches, a simple theoretical model of circular polarization diversity is adopted and calculate correlation coefficient. From the analysis results, it is seen that the correlation coefficient of circular polarization diversity evaluated by the XPD is less than that of vertical polarization diversity. And also, we designed and fabricated circular polarization diversity system with microstrip antenna. we analyzed data measured in indoor NLOS environment using fabricated circular polarization diversity system. From the measurement results, it is clearly seen that the diversity effect of circular polarization diversity system is higher 3dB than vertical polarization diversity system.

  • Numerical simulations are performed to investigate the turbulent convective heat transfer of the supercritical carbon dioxide flows in vertical and horizontal square ducts. The gas cooling process at the supercritical state experiences a sudden change in thermodynamic and transport properties. This results in the extraordinary variations of the heat transfer coefficients in the supercritical state, which are much different from those of single or two phase flows. Algebraic second moment closure which can include the effects of large thermophysical property variations of carbon dioxide and of buoyancy is employed to model the Reynolds stresses and turbulent heat fluxes in the governing equations. The previous correlations for the turbulent heat transfer coefficient for the supercritical carbon dioxide flows couldn't reflect the buoyancy effect. The present results are used to establish a new heat transfer coefficient correlation including the effects of large thermophysical property variation and buoyancy on in-duct cooling process of supercritical carbon dioxide.

  • An improved algorithm for image quality assessment is presented. First a simple model of human visual system, consisting of a nonlinear function and a 2-D filter, processes the input images. This filter has one user-defined parameter, whose value depends on the reference image. This way the algorithm can adapt to different scenarios. In the next step the average value of locally computed correlation coefficients between the two processed images is found. This criterion is closely related to the way in which human observer assesses image quality. Finally, image quality measure is computed as the average value of locally computed correlation coefficients, adjusted by the average correlation coefficient between the reference and error images. By this approach the proposed measure differentiates between the random and signal dependant distortions, which have different effects on human observer. Performance of the proposed quality measure is illustrated by examples involving images with different types of degradation.

  • A pneumatic tire is made up of many flexible filaments of high modulus cord of natural textile, synthetic polymer, glass fiber, or fine hard drawn steel embedded in and bonded to a matrix of low modulus polymetric material. Adhesion property of these materials is very important in tire durability safety because belt-leaving-belt tread separation reduces the ability of a driver to control a vehicle, whether or not the separation is accompanied by a loss of air. In this study adhesion test of carcass-belt-tread is conducted on material properties of 5 PCR tire model, which are on sale in domestic market and analyzed adhesion properties. For those tire models FMVSS 109 indoor high speed durability test is conducted to analyze the correlation between adhesion force and high speed performance of tires and found the correlation between the two test results.

  • Here is investigated the characteristics of double-diffusive convection in thermally-stable stratified horizontal fluid layer. By employing an electrochemical technique, and adopting aqueous CuSO$_4$-H$_2$SO$_4$solution as electrolyte, experiments on ionic mass transfer have been conducted systematically. And, also a new mass transfer correlation in double-diffusive situations has been derived by extending the model of micro-scales of turbulence, which was proposed by Arpaci. The resulting correlation of the Sherwood number as a function of the thermal Rayleigh number was in good agreement with the present experimental results. The present study provides plausible understanding in controlling both mass and heat transfer rates for practical situations including double-diffusive convection.
