  • We successfully developed a high performance and highly reliable blazed GxL device with a high optical efficiency and a high contrast ratio. The device demonstrated superior resistance against a high power laser, which is suitable for a large-area laser projector. We operated the world's largest laser projection screen using this device at the 2005 World Exposition in Aichi, Japan, problem free.

  • Nowadays many companies expect to apply knowledge management mechanism for the explicit business performance improvement. Because peoples who employees are the understanding of knowledge contribution in the organization should try to achieve goal through the effective knowledge management activities. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of major factors to support the performance of knowledge management in the company by using structural equation modeling. From the empirical result of this study with 485 leading corporation in Busan, we came to know that the infrastructure of knowledge management has influence on knowledge sharing and creating mechanism related to knowledge management activities. And, the knowledge management activities has positive influence on internal and external customer' satisfaction, and firm's social responsibility.

  • This paper introduces the outlines of review and approval processes, general criteria and usual practices taken in Japan for the seismic design of high-rise buildings. The structural calculations are based on time-history analyses followed by performance evaluations. This paper also introduces structural design of two high-rise buildings: one is a 100 m high reinforced concrete residential building, and the other is a 300 m high steel building for mixed use.

  • Advanced melting technology is now being employed in the manufacture of stainless steel powders. The new process currently includes electric arc furnace (EAF) technology in concert with Argon Oxygen Decarburization (AOD), High Performance Atomizing (HPA) and hydrogen annealing. The new high performance-processing route has allowed the more consistent production of existing products, and has allowed enhanced properties, such as improved green strength and green density. This paper will review these processing changes along with the potential new products that are being developed utilizing this technology. These include high strength stainless steels such as duplex and dual phase as well as stainless steel powders used in high temperature applications such as diesel filters and fuel cells.

  • As the distributed generation becomes more reliable and economically feasible, it is expected that a higher application of the distributed generation units would be interconnected to the existing grids. This new market penetration using the distributed generation technology is linked to a large number of factors like economics and performance, safety and reliability, market regulations, environmental issues, or grid connection standards. KEPCO, a government company in Korea, has performed the project to identify and evaluate the performance of Micro Gas Turbine(MGT) technologies focused on 30, 60kW-class grid-connected optimization and combined Heat & Power performance. This paper describes the results for the mechanical, electrical, and environmental tests of MGT on actual grid-connection under Korean regulations. As one of the achievements, the simulation model of Exhaust-gas Absorption Chiller was developed, so that it will be able to analyze or propose new distributed generation system using MGT. In addition, KEPCO carried out the field testing of the MGT Cogeneration system at the R&D Center Building, KEPCO. The field test was conducted in order to respond to a wide variety of needs for heat recovery and utilization. The suggested method and experience for the evaluation of the distributed generation will be used for the introduction of other distributed generation technologies into the grid in the future.

  • This paper introduces the current status of high-rise building design in Japan, with reference to some recent projects. Firstly, the design approval system and procedures for high-rise buildings and structures in Japan are introduced. Then, performance-based wind-resistant design of a 300 m-high building, Abeno Harukas, is introduced, where building configuration, superstructure systems and various damping devices are sophisticatedly integrated to ensure a higher level of safety and comfort against wind actions. Next, design of a 213 m-high building is introduced with special attention to habitability against the wind-induced horizontal motion. Finally, performance-based wind-resistant design of a 634 m-high tower, Tokyo Sky Tree, is introduced. For this structure, the core column system was adopted to satisfy the strict design requirements due to the severest level of seismic excitations and wind actions.

  • With recent ESS (Energy Storage System) fire accident, the fault protection performance is becoming more important. However, there has never been any experiments with the protection performance on the faults in the ESS system level. In this study, the effect of AC ground fault and IGBT (Insulated Gate Bipolar mode Transistor) short-circuit failure on MW class ESS was performed experimentally for the first time in the world. First of all, the effect of the AC single line ground fault on battery was analyzed. Moreover, the transient voltage was investigated as a function of the battery capacity and the power level. Finally, the breaking capability and insulation performance of ESS were examined under PCS short-circuit fault condition. Through the tests, it was found that ESS protection system safely blocked the faulty current regardless of the faults, whereas the electronic parts such as IGBT and MC (Magnetic Contactor) were broken by the fault current. Also, the electrical breakdown in ESS resulted from the transient voltage during the protection process.
