Purpose - This study conducted empirical research on non-financial corporations listed on the stock exchange from 2001 to 2010, focusing on the effects of corporate governance on real earnings management of corporations. In particular, this study examined primarily the impact of the largest shareholder who could use earnings management to pursue his own self-interest, and foreign investors who played a checking role against the largest shareholders. The study also reviewed the relationship between corporate governance and earnings management while also considering corporate growth. Research design, data, and methodology - As for the measurements of real earnings management, abnormal operating cash flow and abnormal production cost were utilized. As for the independent variables, share ratio of the largest shareholder and affiliate person (M) and share ratio of foreign investors (FT) were leveraged. This study excluded those organizations that had changed their fiscal years, those that had not submitted an audit report, corporations under supervision, delisted corporations, corporations that had changed their business type, and so on, from the non-financial corporations out of the publicly traded corporations whose fiscal year ended in December from 2001 to 2010 in addition, KIS values were utilized for the corporate financial data in the study. To verify whether management structure and growth had an impact on real earnings management of a corporation through empirical analysis, a multiple regression analysis model was applied. Result - First, as a result of the analysis, the share ratio (M) of the largest shareholder and affiliate person was found to have a significant positive correlation with abnormal cash flow from operations(ACF) and abnormal production cost (APD). When controlling the growth, the share ratio (M) of the largest shareholder and affiliate person was found to have an insignificant correlation with abnormal cash flow from operations(ACF) but a significant correlation with abnormal production cost (APD). Second, foreign ownership (FT) was found to have a significant positive correlation with abnormal cash flow from operations(ACF) and abnormal production cost (APD) at the confidence level of 1 percent when not including the growth dummy. When controlling the growth, foreign ownership (FT) was found to have a significant negative correlation with abnormal cash flow from operations (ACF) and with abnormal production cost (APD). Conclusion - The results imply that the largest shareholder is closely related to earnings management through real activities regardless of corporate growth. It is also possible to determine from these results that foreign investors are related to earnings management through real activities when not considering corporate growth, but that they would reduce earnings management in the case of considering the growth. Thus, this study verified along with the existing studies that foreign investors were conducting the control function on controlling shareholders.
The objective of our study is to examine the Earnings Quality of Win-Win Growth Corporate. The level of Win-Win Growth Corporate is measured by Win-Win Index of korea commission for corporate partnership. Earnings Quality is proxied by Accounting Conservatism that is measured by the method of Givoly and Hayn(2000). The samples of this study selected from listed corporate, consist of 3,608 observations can be collected from 2011 to 2017 at TS-2000. The result of this study can be summerized in the following. the Win-Win Growth has a significant positive relevance on Accounting Conservatism is the proxy of internal Earnings Quality. This means that Win-Win Growth corporate has a higher the Earnings Quality relatively. These results were supported by additional analysis that used the sample that is made up the Win-Win Growth Corporate completely. According to our study, we can expect that the Earnings Quality of Win-Win Growth corporate is true as steel. But this study have some limitation. Especially we can't explain the reason why the Win-Win Growth has a significant positive relevance on Earnings Quality. And, despite additional analysis, there are the limitation of controlling for endogeneity. We hope that our paper can help investor making a economic decision on investment and officials making a effective policy on the Win-Win Growth.
Purpose - In this paper, we examine the effect of accrual earnings management and real earnings management on the corporate value of retail corporations. Research design, data, and Methodology - The sample cover firms whose settlement is December among retail companies listed on the Korea Stock Exchange's securities market and KOSDAQ market from 2001 to 2016. Of these, the targets were companies with operating profit and equity capital of zero or higher and with sales data. The secondary data was collected through KIS-VALUE data base. The Jones model and the modified Jones model were used for the calculating the accrual-based earnings management and the real earnings management. Result - According to the empirical results, the relationship between accrual earnings management, real earnings management and firm value is positively significant in the retail industry as in manufacturing industry. These results are also significant when controlling the size, profitability, investment, debt ratio, dividend, and growth potential of a company. Conclusions - The characteristics of the distribution business can be identified and the influence of the various kinds of earnings management, which is being researched around the manufacturing industry, can be studied in the distribution industry to give practical implications to investors.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the impact of ownership concentration and R&D investment on earnings growth of listed companies in China. For this purpose, this study utilized 14,196 samples from 2,366 Chinese listed companies using the WIND database and conducted empirical analysis by Python. The results of the analysis are as follows. First, the data shows that ownership concentration has a positive (+) impact on revenue growth of Chinese listed firms. Second, ownership concentration has a postive(+) impact on R&D investment of Chinese listed firms. Third, the survey shows that R&D investment has a positive (+) impact on revenue growth of Chinese listed firms. Fourth, the impact of R&D investment on earnings growth of Chinese listed firms has time lag effect. Fifth, R&D investment has a partial mediating effect in ownership concentration and earnings growth of Chinese listed firms. Based on these analytical results, this study proposes measures to promote firms' earnings increase by optimizing ownership concentration and increasing R&D investment in Chinese listed firms.

This paper analyzed the Earnings management of firms selected as preliminary Unicorn. If a manager is selected as a preliminary unicorn firm, he can receive financial support of up to 20 billion won, creating a factor in managing the manager's earnings. The motive for management's earnings management is related to the capital market. Accounting information is used by investors and financial analysts, and corporate profits affect corporate value. Therefore, if the accounting earning is adjusted upward, the corporate value will be raised and investment conditions will be favorable. In this paper, earnings quality was measured by the modified Jones model of Dechow et al.(1995) by the ROA control model of Kothari et al.(2005) among the discretionary accruals estimated using an alternative accrual prediction model. Competing similar companies in the same market as the selected companies were formed, and the discretionary accruals were mutually compared to verify the research hypotheses, and only the selected companies were analyzed for the audit year and after the audit year. As a result of the analysis, it was found that the companies selected as preliminary unicorns had higher earnings management compared to the corresponding companies in question, which had a negative impact on the quality of accounting profits. It was found that the companies selected as preliminary unicorns continued to receive incentives for management's earnings management even after being selected. These results indicate that the companies selected as prospective unicorns are recognized for their value in the market through external growth rather than internal growth, and thus, incentives for management's earnings management to attract investment from external investors under favorable conditions are continuing. In the future preliminary unicorn selection evaluation, it was possible to present what needs to be reviewed on the quality of accounting earning. The implication of this paper is that the factors of management's earnings management eventually hinder investors and creditors from judging the reliability of accounting information. It was suggested that a policy alternative for the K-Unicorn Project, which enhances reliability were presented by reflecting the evaluation of earnings quality through discretionary accruals.
This study examines the value-relevance of accruals and discretionary accruals. Also, by examining the effects of the corporate life-cycle on these relationship, this study is able to provide evidence of the value-relevance of accruals and discretionary accruals measures in the economic context of life-cycle theory. This study uses results based on life-cycle classification methods developed by Anthony and Ramesh(1992), adjust Jones model and Dechow Dechev(2002) model. We classify firms using individuals variables(sales growth, capital expenditure growth, employee growth) and then use a composite score obtained from all variables for classification. Our sample consists of 272 firms listed in the Korean Stock Exchange during 14 years(1996-2009). Our final sample for regression variables consists of 2,448 firm-year observations. This evidence implies that the value-relevance of accruals and discretionary accruals in the growth and mature stage can have positive impact on the price but in the decline the value-relevance of accruals and discretionary accruals can have negative impact on the price. The results mean that discretionary accruals communicate managements' private information in the growth stage, but. earnings management in the decline stage. The results of this study suggest that corporate life cycle stages influence the value-relevance of accruals and discretionary accruals measures.

Recently, Korea's economy is facing a difficult economic situation due to sluggish domestic demand, low corporate investment and a cliff in youth employment. In order to overcome this problem and turn the economy into a virtuous circle, the government has introduced and implemented various economic policies. In this study, the effects of the corporate accumulated earnings tax system included in the 2014 tax code revision were to be verified. The validity of the business income was verified and analyzed using the financial data of the entity as to whether the income of the entity was being circulated to household income. First, validating the validity of whether the income tax on non-current income affects the level of an entity's investment, the results showed significant negative effects at a significant level of 5 per cent. Second, the analysis of whether the return tax on corporate income is affecting management decisions that increase the level of dividends for an entity has identified a metaphorical positive relationship. Third, it was confirmed that the income tax on uncurrency income does not have a significant effect on the increase in wages for workers. The result is presumed to be the main reason for the increased uncertainty in the economy and business environment.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the relationship between the ratio of non-controlling shareholder interests (minority equity ratio, MER) and the measurement error in real activities manipulation (RM) proxy for Japanese firms. Many Japanese firms have practiced stakeholder-oriented corporate governance systems. Previous studies suggest that the higher the MER, the more Japanese businesses tend to employ management techniques for the group's sales growth while also reallocating resources inside the group to reduce principal-principal conflicts. Such differences in management strategies by firms could lead to measurement error in the RM proxy. The analysis uses 16,450 firm-years listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. The results of our analysis show that there is a positive relationship between MER and the RM proxy, and high persistence of RM proxies, suggesting that the RM proxies may contain measurement error. We also find that MER is correlated with variables associated with management strategy and that controlling for these variables can reduce the measurement error of RM proxy in firms with large MER. This study extends previous research on measurement error in RM proxy by relating them to ownership structure and corporate governance. This paper would contribute to researchers examining issues related to RM.

In this study, a firm's internationalization level was measured as the ratio of foreign sales to total sales (FSTS) of individual firms. A demonstration was conducted with several control variables that affect the persistence of the firm's profits using the Sloan (1996) model as a proxy for its primary relationship between net profit and the next profit. An empirical analysis of the end-December settlement firms listed on the securities market from 2011 to 2016 was conducted using a fixed-effect model to confirm that the persistence of the firm's internationalization and accounting profits was positive at the 1% significant level, indicating that the persistence of the firm's profits also increased as the level of individual firm's internationalization increased. In addition, the firm size, financial soundness, cash accompanying, growth, and investment ability, consistent with forecasts, represented a statistically significant (+) relationship with globalization. These results suggest that firms can maintain and expand their value stably by securing new overseas markets and promoting growth by implementing internationalization strategies.
Purpose - The purpose of this study is to examine whether the cash policies of retail firms listed on Korean stock markets are consistent with the evidence provided in the study of Almeida et al. (2004). Liquidity management is an important issue for financially constrained firms relative to financially unconstrained firms. Because there are few sources of external funding, the optimal liquidity policies of financially constrained firms should reflect their own earnings or cash inflows to create opportunities for current and future real investments. According to this simple idea, we estimate the sensitivity of cash to cash flows and simply check whether the estimated sensitivity to cash flows of the cash retained by constrained retail firms is greater than that of the cash retained by unconstrained retail firms. Through this work, we aim to explain why the cash policies of the retail firms listed on the Korean stock markets differ from those of listed manufacturing enterprises. Research design, data, and methodology - To explain a firm's cash holdings, we use only three explanatory variables: earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT), Tobin's q, and size. All the variables are defined as the value of the numerator divided by aggregate assets. Thanks to this definition, it is possible to treat all the sample firms as a single large firm. The sample financial data for this study are collected from the retail enterprises listed on the KOSPI and KOSDAQ markets from 1991 to 2013. We can obtain these data from WISEfn, the financial information company. This study's methodology has its origin in Keynes's simple idea of precautionary liquidity demand: When a firm faces financial constraints, cash savings from earnings or cash inflows become important from the corporate finance perspective. Following this simple idea, Almeida et al. (2004) developed their theoretical model and found empirical evidence that the sensitivity of cash to cash flows varies systematically according to different types of financing frictions. To find more empirical evidence for this idea, we examined the cash flow sensitivity of the cash held by Korean retail firms. Results - Through several robustness tests, we empirically showed that financially constrained Korean retail firms display significant positive propensity to save cash from earnings before interest and taxes, while the estimated cash flow sensitivity of the cash held by unconstrained retail firms is not significant. Despite the relatively low earnings of retail firms, their sensitivity is three times greater than that of manufacturing enterprises. This implies that Korean retail firms have greater intentions of facilitating future investments rather than current investments. Conclusions - The characteristics of the cash policies of Korean retail firms differ from those of manufacturing firms. This contrast may be attributable to industry-oriented policy planning, regulations, and institutional differences. However, the industrial policymakers should observe signals of the long-term growth options of retail firms based on their high propensity to save from their cash inflows.
