  • Corona characteristics of conductors are dependent on the electric field conditions in the immediate vicinity of the conductors. In case of DC transmission line, particularly, the space charge plays an important role in the electric field distribution. Therefore, DC corona cage simulation is necessary for long-term test in the same conditions. This paper presents the results of designing and constructing hardwares such as DC power supply, measurement system and DAS to carry out the simulation. The corona cage longitudinally is divided into five equal length sections and three inner sections of those are isolated from the ground of outer cage. The measurement items are radio noise, corona current, television noise, audible noise and meteorological conditions. In the next step, various simulations about the type and configuration of two or three candidate conductors will be conducted. And then finally an environmentally-friendly conductor for HVDC overhead transmission line will be decided.

  • In the measurement of atmospheric static electric field, it is important to know characteristics of corona discharges caused at the tip of test electrode. This paper presents the fundamental data of DC corona discharges that occurred at the tip of a needle-shaped electrode placed in the homogeneous background electric field which simulates the atmospheric static field under thundercloud. The major characteristics of interest for this purpose are the polarity effect of corona discharges and the magnitudes and time intervals of corona current pulses. The experimental set-up consists of the plate-to-plate configuration with a needle-shaped protrusion, DC power supply, and voltage and current measuring devices. As a result of experiments, the polarity dependence of corona pulses is significantly pronounced. The time intervals between successive corona pulses in the negative polarity is much longer than those in the positive polarity. The time intervals for both polarities is drastically decreased as the applied electric field is increased. Also the magnitudes of the positive corona pulses are slightly changed with an increase in applied electric field, but those of the negative corona pulses are linearly increased with increasing the applied electric fields.

  • In this thesis, the electrification phenomenon was studied by measurement of charging current and discharging current in polymers when the carriers generated by corona discharge were supplied to the surface of polymers. Corona charging current of PVC, polar and noncrystalline polymer, was larger than that of nonpolar and amorphous polymers. Corona charging current on the specimen of naked upper surface (CIM) was larger than charging current on the specimen of electrode made. Carrier injection differed from interfacial phase of polymer surFace. The transfer phenomenon vaned with chemical structure of polymer and then the polar effect of PVC was remarkable because of large electron affinity of Cl. In the characteristics of discharging current of PVC, the abnormal current was observed. It was supposed that this phenomena presented the trap of injected carriers in PVC and that static electricity phenomenon was generated by trap.

  • A semi-empirical method to determine the electrostatic characteristics of a diode type corona aerosol charger based on ion current measurement and electrostatic charging theory was presented. Results from mathematical model were in agreement with those from experimental investigation of the charger. Current-voltage characteristics, $N_{i}t$ product and charge distribution against aerosol size were obtained. It was shown that the space charge was significant and must be taken into account at high ion number concentration and low flow rate. Additionally, significant particle loss was evident for particles smaller than 20 nm in diameter where their electrical mobility was high. Increase in charging efficiency may be achieved by introducing surrounding sheath flow and applying AC high voltage. Overall, the approach was found to be useful in characterizing the aerosol charger.

  • Negative corona onset characteristics of the stranded conductors based on the ultra-high voltage (UHV) corona cage were studied in the paper. Based on the corona self-sustaining criterion in extreme uneven electric fields and the secondary emission process of the photoelectrons, the corona onset calculation model in the UHV corona cage is established and the corona current tests of the single LGJ900-75, 6 bundle LGJ900-75, 8 bundle LGJ400-35 conductors in dry and rain conditions were done in the UHV corona cage, and the rain rates are 2.4 mm/h, 20 mm/h and 30 mm/h. Corona onset electric field strength is gained by E-I tangent method, and the onset electric field strength in dry condition proves that the calculation model can be used to calculate the corona onset characteristics of the bundle conductors in the UHV corona cage. A further analysis proves that: the negative corona onset voltage of the conductor increases with the bundle number and the diameter of the sub conductor, but decreases with the bundle space in the corona cage. The onset electric field strength is influenced little by bundle space and bundle number, but decreases with the increase of the diameter of the sub-conductor. The surface irregularity coefficient decreases with the rain rate.

  • The frequency characteristics of surface corona discharge from the electrodes on the ceramic substrate ozonator were investigated. The frequency characteristics of dark current were compared with that of corona discharge. Switching frequency which was the fraction of resonant frequency was found to be effective for corona discharge. This is regarded to distort the electric field distribution on the discharge plate which is essential for corona discharge. The measurement showed the efficiency of 28mg/W ozone generation when the switching frequency was 1/5 of the resonant frequency.

  • This study conducts a laboratory measurement on a cylindrical electrostatic precipitator(ESP) with a 30mm-diameter cylinder. Several kinds of test aerosols are generated with an atomizer and a diffusion dryer. The effects of applied voltage, flow state, gas velocity, and gas temperature on the electrical characteristics of the precipitator and onset of corona are experimentally investigated. The corona onset voltage is decreased, as diameter of discharge electrode wire becomes small or temperature of the precipitator increases. As the fluid velocity or particle load in the precipitator increases, the corona current is decreased.

  • This paper presents the experimental results of the dielectric characteristics with temperature changes under highly non-uniform electric field in $SF_6$ gas. The impulse preliminary breakdown developments were investigated by the measurement of predischarge current and breakdown voltage. As a result, the first stremer corona is initiated at the tip of needle electrode, and bridges the test gap. Also the first stremer corona onset and breakdown voltages the negative polarity was much higher than that in the positive polarity in same temperature. In addition, the varition of temperature have a little effect on the positive polarity. On the other hand, in some cases negative polarity corona onset and breakdown voltages increased with increasing a high temperature.

  • The aim of this paper is to design and evaluate a high concentration, high penetration unipolar corona ionizer. The electrostatic characteristics in terms of voltage-current relationships of the present ionizer in the discharge zones for positive and negative coronas were discussed. Using ion current measurement, the concentration and penetration of ions were evaluated at corona voltages across the needle electrodes between 1 and 4 kV, flow rates between 1 and 5 L/min, and an operating pressure of 1 atm. In the discharge zone of the ionizer, the highest ion concentrations were found to be about $1.71{\times}10^{14}$ and $5.09{\times}10^{14}\;ions/m^3$ for positive and negative coronas, respectively. At the outlet of the ionizer, it was found that the highest ion concentration was about $1.95{\times}10^{13}$ and $1.91{\times}10^{13}\;ions/m^3$ for positive and negative coronas, respectively. The highest ion penetration for positive and negative coronas through the ionizer was found to be about 98 % and 33 %, respectively. The $N_it$ product for positive and negative coronas was also found to $1.28{\times}10^{13}$ and $7.43{\times}10^{13}\;ions/m^3s$, respectively. From the findings, this ionizer proved to be particularly useful as an aerosol charger for positive and negative charge before the detector in an electrical aerosol detector.

  • There are claims that ESE(Early streamer emission) Air terminals offer a vastly increased zone of protection over that of traditional lightning rods by causing the emission of an upward streamer/leader that will propagate towards the tip of downward leader at an early stage in the attachment process than would occur for a simple rod in the same geometrical configurations. This paper shows the results of comparing test a particular type of ESE air terminals with a simple rod conducted in the KEH HV laboratory, which are lightning impulse voltage test, flashover direction test and corona emission current measurement. The results from this test show a completely random scattering of flashovers to the conventional and ESE air terminals under identical electrics] and geometrical conditions, and thus shows no advantage of one terminal over the other.
