  • In this study, the Thermally Stimulated Current(TSC) of corona charged PTFE is studied and the simulation of corona charging process is also calculated by Finite Element Method. The electrets which were formed by applying high voltages (DC ${\pm}5{\sim}{\pm}8$ [kV]) to PTFE, are used to measure TSC in the temperature range of $-100{\sim}+200$ [$^{\circ}C$] and then the Finite Element Method is performed to examine corona charging process using a obtained physical constants. As a result. it is confirmed that the charging negative corona is profitable as the applications are manufactured, because the time constant of negative corona is much larger than it of positive corona. And it is attempted to estimate the corona charging process in space using simulation.

  • In the present study, a simple corona-wire charger for unipolar diffusion charging of aerosol particles is designed, constructed, and characterized. Experimental characterizations of the electrostatic discharge in terms of current-voltage relationships of positive and negative coronas of the corona-wire charger are also presented and discussed. The charging current and ion concentration in the charging zone increased monotonically with corona voltage. The negative corona showed higher current than the positive corona. At the same corona voltages, the current in the discharge zone is about 600 times larger than the charging current. The ion number concentrations ranged within approximately $5.0{\times}10^{10}$ to $1.24{\times}10^{16}$ and $4.5{\times}10^{12}$ to $2{\times}10^{16}$ ions/$m^3$ in the discharge and charging zones, respectively. A numerical model is used to predict the behavior of the electric potential lines. Numerical results of ion penetration through the inner electrode are in good agreement with the experimental results.

  • A novel high intensity charging device has been developed for the control of the submicron particles, such as the diesel soot particulates, which are very hard to charge highly by any means of the conventional charging device. Having new corona electrodes of a multineedle disk with the corona field-control electrodes in the outer-cylinder electrode, extremely intense and stable coronas on there sharp points expanding both radially and axially are established in the corona charging region between the multi-corona -needles and an outer-cylinder electrode. As a result, the maximum corona field intensity and current density of the charging device of the standard one on soot load in laboratory tests have been 8.5KV/cm(E=$2V_m$/D(1nD/d)) and $6.5{\mu}A/cm^2$ which enhance greatly the charging of soot particles about several 100 times higher than those obtained in conventional cylinder precipitators.

  • In order to estimate spatial charging process in the corona charging which has been used to make polymer electret, the electrical properties of polypropylene film were obtained from Thermally Stimulated Current (TSC) measurements after corona charging between knife electrode and cylinder electrode with the voltages of -5, -6, -7 and -8[kV], respectively. And then the electrostatic contour and the electric field vector were also simulated by using Finite Element Method (FEM). The edge effect around edge of knife electrode affected the electrostatic contour on surface of specimen and the electric field concentration inside specimen. The uneven charging state in the electret due to the mistake on design could be calculated and so the optimal design of corona charging device which is appropriate to various materials is come to be practicable.

  • Many toxic pesticides as aqueous-base sprays are dispensed for protection of food crops from pests into farm fields. When dispensed with conventional nozzles, a large portion of the spray is often lost by airborne drifts of droplets away and lack of deposition onto the plants due to rapid gravitational settling of droplets to the soil beneath. And target deposition efficiencies poorer than 20% are often encountered in agricultural pesticides. An electrostatic spraying technology offers a very favorable means to increasing pesticides droplets deposition onto biological surfaces of living crops. In this paper a corona type spray nozzle, utilizing a set of corona charging devices and a pulsed droplet-charging voltage applied, has been proposed and tested its potential experimentally. As a result, it exhibits a large current deposition of aqueous pesticide sprays on the sensing target, which, however, promise to be as one of the effective electrostatic spraying nozzle.

  • We applied a new charging system using the condensation and evaporation method to charge the submicron particles with a uniform charging performance. The monodispersed NaCl submicron particles were condensed by n-butanol vapor and grew up to micron droplets with a same size, regardless of their initial size. Those condensed droplets were charged in an indirect corona charger. The indirect corona charger consisted of the ion generation zone and the particle charging zone. In the ion generation zone, Ions were generated by corona discharge and some of them moved into the particle charging zone by a carrier gas and mixed with the condensed droplet. And finally, the charged and condensed droplets dried through an evaporator to shrink to their original size. The average charge and penetration rate of the particles before and after evaporation were measured by CPC and aerosol electrometer and compared with those of a conventional corona charger. The results showed that the average charge was $5\~7$ charges and the penetration rate was over $90\%$, regardless of the initial particle size.

  • The influences of corona charging parameters on collection efficiency and surface potential of air filters were investigated. A polypropylene filter medium was electrically charged using a corona charger, and the resulting surface potential and filtration efficiency against neutralized KCl particles were measured. The filter media was charged under different conditions of applied voltage, voltage polarity, charging time, and distance between electrodes. In addition, we considered charging both sides of the filter as well as charging one side of the filter. As a result, electrical force obtained by charged fiber affected filtration efficiency when the apply voltage strength was higher than 7 kV. Negatively charged filter had higher filtration efficiency than positively charged filter while the surface potential of the negatively charged filter was slightly lower than those of positively charged filter. Moreover, the filtration efficiency increased as the charging time of filter fiber increased and the distance between electrodes decreased. The filtration efficiency was more sensitive to changes of charging time than to those of electrode distance, and the efficiency of both sides charged filter was higher than that of single side charged filter.

  • The electrical discharge and operational characteristics of needle and wire-cylinder corona charger based on current measurements for positive and negative coronas were evaluated and compared. A semi-empirical method was used to determine the ion concentrations in the charging zone and at the outlet of both chargers. Results from experimental investigation revealed that magnitudes of the charging current from the wire-cylinder charger were approximately 3.5 and 2 times smaller than those from the needle charger for the positive and negative coronas, respectively. The ion number concentrations at the outlet for positive corona of both chargers were higher than fur negative corona at the same voltage. Flow and electric fields in the charging zone of both chargers were also analyzed via numerical computation. Strong electric field strength zone was identified and led to high charging and particle deposition. Effect of particle deposition on the evolution of discharge current was presented. It was shown that ions loss inside the wire-cylinder charger was higher than the needle charger The particle deposited on the corona electrodes and on the grounded cylinder caused a great reduction in charging efficiency of both chargers.
