In this paper an EGD generator of small capacity with the operating gases of $O_2,\;N_2$ and air is made and the electric characteristics in relation to energy conversion range length, corona current and gas pressure are investigated. The results are as follows: 1. There is a critical value in conversion range length for maximum open voltage and the critical value increases with fluid velocity. 2. The open voltage increases approximately linearly with corona current. 3. There is a critical value in the gas pressure for maximum open voltage and this pressure of gas decreases with fluid velocity in constant conversion range length.

BITSE is a technology demonstration mission to remotely measure the speed, temperature, and density of the solar wind as it forms as close as 3 Rs. BITSE obtained coronal images during its one day flight above more than 99% of the atmosphere, and calibration data are taken in the laboratory as well as during the flight. As the linearly polarized K-corona is much fainter than other bright sources like diffraction, sky, and F-corona, a careful data reduction is required to obtain reliable scientific results. We will report status of the obtained data, the reduction progress, and future plan.
In order to study the effect of the high-altitude and dusty weather in northwest of China on the corona characteristics of transmission lines, a corona caged based experimental system with sandy and dusty flow condition is numerically investigated and designed. This system overcomes the difficulties caused by harsh environment and offers easy usage for off-site tests. The design parameters are mainly determined by the characteristics of strong sandstorm in northwest region and test requirements. By the comparison of numerical simulation of the particle diffusion in four programs with rectangular or circular air-duct, a practical technology, which introduces swirl to control the particle diffusion length, is obtained. Accordingly, the structure of round air-duct with swirl elbow in inlet and outlet of high level segment is selected as final program. Systems of control and measurement are designed at the same time. Field tuning results show that the test system could ensure the range of sandy and dusty coverage. The wind speed, sandy and dusty concentration could be controlled and meet the requirements of accuracy. The experimental system has many features, such as simple structure, easy to be assembled, disassembled, transported and operated, small space occupied.
In view of the planned NASA's and ESA's Solar Probe Plus and Solar Orbiter missions, respectively, to probe the inner heliosphere and the Sun's corona, it is timely to investigate outstanding problems associated with the solar wind. Among them is the temperature anisotropy problem. As the solar wind expands into the interplanetary space, the density and magnetic field decreases radially, thus leading to temperature anisotropy ($T_{\parallel}{\gg}T_{\perp}$). However, the measured temperature anisotropy can at times be characterized by $T_{\perp}$ > $T_{\parallel}$, while at other times the measured $T_{\parallel}/T_{\perp}$ is much milder than predicted by adiabatic theory. Physical reasons remain poorly understood. This notwithstanding, it is known from plasma physics that for $T_{\perp}$ > $T_{\parallel}$ electromagnetic ion-cyclotron (EMIC) and mirror instabilities are excited, while for $T_{\parallel}$ > $T_{\perp}$, fire-hose instability is excited. By constructing the threshold conditions for various instabilities, one may construct a closure relation that may be useful for modeling the solar wind. In the present paper we discuss theoretical construction of the anisotropy-beta relation by means of quasi-linear theories of these instabilities. The present work complements previous efforts on the basis of linear theory, hybrid simulations, and empirical fits of observations.
The ionic wind formed in a nonuniform electric field has been recognized to have a significant effect on particle collection in an electrostatic precipitator(ESP). Under normal operating conditions the effect of ionic wind is not pronounced. However, as the flow velocity becomes smaller, the ionic wind becomes pronounced and induces secondary flow, which has a significant influence on the flow field and the particle collecting efficiency. In this paper, experiments for investigating the effect of secondary flow on collection efficiencies were carried out by changing the flow velocities in 0.2-0.7m/s and the applied voltages in 9-11kV/cm. The particle size distributions and concentrations are measured by DMA and CNC. To analyze the experimental results, numerical analysis of electric filed in ESP was carried out. It shows that particle collection is influenced by two independent dimensionless numbers, $Re_{ehd}\;and\;Re_{flow}$ not by $N_{ehd}$ alone. When $Re_{flow}$, decreases for constant $Re_{ehd}$, the secondary flow prohibits the particle collection. But when $Re_{ehd}$ increases for constant $Re_{flow}$, it enhances the particle collection by driving the particles into the collection region.
In our previous study, a wire-plate type electrostatic precipitator (ESP) was developed to collect bioaerosols of 100 nm size. In the study, various flow rates (40 ~ 100 L/min) and applied voltages (3 ~ 10 kV) were tested for experiment. In this study, numerical analysis was performed for the ESP of the previous study with the same flow rates and applied voltages, but with varying the size of bioaerosols to 0.04 ~ 2.5 ㎛. Overall, the numerical analysis results well predicted the experimental data. Bioaerosols of 0.1 ~ 0.5 ㎛ showed the minimum collection efficiency for all conditions because of low charge number. The effect of the ionic wind generated by the corona discharge was calculated. However, the ionic wind did not affect much the collection efficiency. The aerosol collection in the ESP of this study was due to the electrostatic force generated by particle charge in the electric field. This numerical study on the ESP can be used for the design and optimization of higher flow rate (> 100 L/min) ESP.
The Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) has been developing a next-generation coronagraph (NGC) in cooperation with NASA to measure the coronal electron density, temperature, and speed simultaneously, using four different optical filters around 400 nm. KASI organized an expedition to demonstrate the coronagraph measurement scheme and the instrumental technology during the 2017 total solar eclipse (TSE) across the USA. The observation site was in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, USA. We built an eclipse observation system, the Diagnostic Coronal Experiment (DICE), composed of two identical telescopes to improve the signal-to-noise ratio. The observation was conducted at four wavelengths and three linear polarization directions in the limited total eclipse time of about 140 seconds. We successfully obtained polarization data for the corona but we were not able to obtain information on the coronal electron temperature and speed due to the low signal-to-noise ratio of the optical system and strong emission from prominences located at the western limb. In this study, we report the development of DICE and the observation results from the eclipse expedition. TSE observation and analysis with our self-developed instrument showed that a coronagraph needs to be designed carefully to achieve its scientific purpose. We gained valuable experience for future follow-up NASA-KASI joint missions: the Balloon-borne Investigation of the Temperature and Speed of Electrons in the Corona (BITSE) and the COronal Diagnostic EXperiment (CODEX).
The Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute plans to develop a coronagraph in collaboration with National Aeronautics and Space Administrative (NASA) and install it on the International Space Station (ISS). The coronagraph is an externally occulted one stage coronagraph with a field of view from 2.5 to 15 solar radii. The observation wavelength is approximately 400 nm where strong Fraunhofer absorption lines from the photosphere are scattered by coronal electrons. Photometric filter observation around this band enables the estimation of 2D electron temperature and electron velocity distribution in the corona. Together with the high time cadence (< 12 min) of corona images to determine the geometric and kinematic parameters of coronal mass ejections, the coronagraph will yield the spatial distribution of electron density by measuring the polarized brightness. For the purpose of technical demonstration, we intend to observe the total solar eclipse in 2017 August for the filter system and to perform a stratospheric balloon experiment in 2019 for the engineering model of the coronagraph. The coronagraph is planned to be installed on the ISS in 2021 for addressing a number of questions (e.g. coronal heating and solar wind acceleration) that are both fundamental and practically important in the physics of the solar corona and of the heliosphere.
In a solar coronagraph, the most important component is an occulter to block the direct light from the disk of the sun. Because the intensity of the solar outer corona is $10^{-6}$ to $10^{-10}$ times of that of the solar disk ($I_{\odot}$), it is necessary to minimize scattering at the optical elements and diffraction at the occulter. Using a Fourier optic simulation and a stray light test, we investigated the performance of a compact coronagraph that uses an external truncated-cone occulter without an internal occulter and Lyot stop. In the simulation, the diffracted light was minimized to the order of $7.6{\times}10^{-10}I_{\odot}$ when the cone angle ${\theta}_c$ was about $0.39^{\circ}$. The performance of the cone occulter was then tested by experiment. The level of the diffracted light reached the order of $6{\times}10^{-9}I_{\odot}$ at ${\theta}_c=0.40^{\circ}$. This is sufficient to observe the outer corona without additional optical elements such as a Lyot stop or inner occulter. We also found the manufacturing tolerance of the cone angle to be $0.05^{\circ}$, the lateral alignment tolerance was $45{\mu}m$, and the angular alignment tolerance was $0.043^{\circ}$. Our results suggest that the physical size of coronagraphs can be shortened significantly by using a cone occulter.
Experimental data are reported for charging and collection of NaCl aerosols in the 0.03- to $0.2{\mu}m$-geometric-mean-diameter range in 2-stage parallel-plate electrostatic precipitators. The NaCl aerosols are generated with geometric standard deviation of about 1.74 and particle generation rate of about 10^9 particles/see by the constant output atomizer and injected into the air flow in the clean wind-tunnel. The 2-stage parallel-plate electrostatic precipitator installed in the test section of the wind-tunnel is operated with a positive corona discharge. The NaCl aerosols in the channel flow are sampled and transported to the aerosol particle number concentration measurement system by using the isoaxial sampling and transport system constructed based on the Okazaki and Willeke design. The aerosol particle number concentration measurement system measures the size distribution of submicrometer aerosols by an electrical mobility detection technique. It is confirmed from comparing the measured collection efficiencies in this study and the predicted ones by our previous theoretical analysis that the predicted collection efficiencies agree well with the experimental ones. It is also found from the comparison that below about $0.02{\mu}m$ all particles are not charged and the uncharged particles are not collected, and consequently 2-stage parallel-plate electrostatic precipitators are not suitable for that particle size range.
