  • The vibration characteristic analysis of sandwich cylindrical shells subjected with magnetorheological (MR) elastomer and constraining layer are considered in this study. And, the discrete finite element method is adopted to calculate the vibration and damping characteristics of the sandwich cylindrical shell system. The effects of thickness of the MR elastomer, constraining layer, applied magnetic fields on the vibration characteristics of the sandwich shell system are also studied in this paper. Additionally, the rheological properties of the MR elastomer can be changed by applying various magnetic fields and the properties of the MR elastomer are described by complex quantities. The natural frequencies and modal loss factor of the sandwich cylindrical shells are calculated for many designed parameters. The core layer of MR elastomer is found to have significant effects on the damping behavior of the sandwich cylindrical shells.

  • This paper proposes an approximate formulation to estimate the bifurcation buckling loads of cylindrical shells with soft elastic cores under the conditions of axial compression. In general, thin-walled, axially compressed cylindrical shells buckle into a diamond pattern in the elastic range. However, buckling symmetrical with respect to the axis of the cylinder may occur when the cylindrical shell is supported by an elastic medium. By considering this characteristic, we introduce the simplified approximate formulation that can give sufficiently accurate results for the bifurcation buckling loads of cylindrical shells. Moreover the results are compared with the exact buckling loads in order to confirm the accuracy of the proposed approximate formulation.

  • In this study, monodispersive silica nanoparticles with double mesoporous shells were synthesized, and the pore size of synthetic mesoporous silica nanoparticles was controlled. Cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC), N, N-dimethylbenzene, and decane were used as soft template and induced to form outer mesoporous shell. The resultant double mesoporous silica nanoparticles were consisted of two layers of shells having different pore sizes, and it has been confirmed that outer shells with larger pores (Mean pore size > 2.5 nm) are formed directly on the surface of the smaller pore sized shell (Mean pore size < 2.5 nm). It was confirmed that the regulation of the molar ratio of pore expansion agents plays a key role in determining the pore size of double mesoporous shells.

  • Reflecting the growing importance of nanomaterials in science and technology, controlling the porosity combined with well-defined structural properties has been an ever-demanding pursuit in the related fields of frontier researches. A number of reports have focused on the synthesis of various nanoporous materials so far and, recently, the nanomaterials with multimodal porosity are getting an emerging importance due to their improved material properties compared with the mono porous materials. However, most of those materials are obtained in bulk phases while the spherical nanoparticles are one of the most practical platforms in a great number of applications. Here, we report on the synthesis of the core-shell silica nanoparticles with double mesoporous shells (DMSs). The DMS nsnoparticles are spherical and monodispersive and have two different mesoporous shells, i.e., the bimodal porosity. It is the first example of the core-shell silica nanoparticles with the different mesopores coexisting in the individual nanoparticles. Furthermore, the carbon and silica hollow capsules were also fabricated via a serial replication process.

  • In the present work, the vibration characteristics of sandwich nanocomposite shells, fortified with graphene platelets (GPLs) have been researched. The shell has been considered as the stadium roof shape with double curvatures under vibration due to earthquake. The nanocomposite has the matrix of concrete which is fortified with uniform or linear dispersions of GPLs. Also, the core possesses cellular type square architecture for which the effective elastic modulus has been defined in the context of relative density based relations. Based upon the classic shell strains containing two identical curvatures, the governing equations have been established and solved through differential quadrature approach. It will be seen that the vibrational frequencies rely on the core relative density, height of layers, the amount and dispersions of GPLs and even shell geometric parameters.

  • A facile and effective approach has been developed to prepare hybrid hollow microspheres, via consecutive processes of pickering mini-emulsion polymerization for core-shell formation, and calcination of the sacrificial core. The resulting hollow composite particles have mono-layered shells. The morphology and size characteristics of synthesized composite particles were investigated, using dynamic light scattering (DLS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) measurements.

  • Theoretical calculations suggest that the thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) can be improved by introducing a core-shell heterostructure to a semiconductor nanowire because of the reduced thermal conductivity of the nanowire. To experimentally verify the decrease in thermal conductivity in core-shell nanowires, the thermal conductivity of Ge-SixGe1-x core-shell nanowires grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) was measured using suspended microdevices. The silicon composition (Xsi) in the shells was measured to be about 0.65, and the remainder of the germanium in the shells was shown to play a role in decreasing defects originating from the lattice mismatch between the cores and shells. In addition to the standard four-point current- voltage (I-V) measurement, the measurement configuration based on the Wheatstone bridge was attempted to enhance the measurement sensitivity. The measured thermal conductivity values are in the range of 9-13 W/mK at room temperature and are lower by approximately 30 than that of a germanium nanowire with a comparable diameter.

  • A layerwise shear deformation theory is applied in this paper for buckling analysis of piezoelectric truncated conical shell. The core is a multiphase nanocomposite reinforced by carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and carbon fibers. The top and bottom face sheets are piezoelectric subjected to 3D electric field and external voltage. The Halpin-Tsai model is used for obtaining the effective moisture and temperature dependent material properties of the core. The proposed layerwise theory is based on Mindlin's first-order shear deformation theory in each layer and results for a laminated truncated conical shell with three layers considering the continuity boundary condition. Applying energy method, the coupled motion equations are derived and analyzed using differential quadrature method (DQM) for different boundary conditions. The influences of some parameters such as boundary conditions, CNTs weight percent, cone semi vertex angle, geometrical parameters, moisture and temperature changes and external voltage are investigated on the buckling load of the smart structure. The results show that enhancing the CNTs weight percent, the buckling load increases. Furthermore, increasing the moisture and temperature changes decreases the buckling load.

  • Amorphous $Al_2O_3$ nanotubes have been fabricated by utilizing the ZnO nanowires as template with wet etching method. ZnO nanowires synthesized by thermal evaporation are conformally coated with $Al_2O_3$ by atomic-layer deposition(ALD) method. The $Al_2O_3$-coated ZnO nanowires are of core-shell structure; ZnO core nanowires and $Al_2O_3$ shells. When the $ZnO/Al_2O_3$ core-shell structure is dipped in $H_3PO_4$ solution at $25^{\circ}C$ for a 6 min, the core ZnO materials are completely etched, and only $Al_2O_3$ nanotubes are remained. This nanotube fabrication is technically easier than others, and simply approachable. Transmission electron microscopy shows that the $Al_2O_3$ nanotubes have various thicknesses that can be controlled.

  • We study the influence of rotation on the dynamical evolution of collisional single-mass stellar clusters up to core-collapse by using N-body simulations. Rotating King models which are characterized by dimensionless central potential parameter $W_o$ and the rotation parameter $W_o$ are used as initial models. Our results show that inner shells slowly contract until core-collapse phase is reached, followed by a slow expansion. Angular momentum is transported outward, while the core is rotating even faster than before, as predicted by gravogyro catastrophe theory. We confirm that rotation plays an important role in accelerating the dynamical evolution of stellar cluster, in particular in accelerating the core collapse.
