  • In this research, optical fiber sensors and shape memory alloys (SMA) were incorporated into sandwich panels for development of a smart honeycomb sandwich structure with damage detection and shape recovery functions. First, small-diameter fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors were embedded in the adhesive layer between a CFRP face-sheet and an aluminum honeycomb core. From the change in the reflection spectrum of the FBG sensors, the debonding between the face-sheet and the core and the deformation of the face-sheet due to impact loading could be well detected. Then, the authors developed the SMA honeycomb core and bonded CFRP face-sheets to the core. When an impact load was applied to the panel, the cell walls of the core were buckled and the face-sheet was bent. However, after the panel was heated over the reverse transformation finish temperature of the SMA, the core buckling disappeared and the deflection of the face-sheet was relieved. Hence the bending stiffness of the panel could be recovered.

  • Esthetic restorations have been widely used in dental practice, although many studies have focused on the development and improvement of all ceramic restorations. The success of esthetic restorations depends primarily on an optimal bond strength between various veneered ceramics and core materials for esthetic restorations. The purpose of this study was to compare the shear bond strength between various veneered ceramics and core materials for esthetic restorations. 30 metal cores and 20 zirconia cores were fabricated and divided into five groups according to veneered ceramic materials such as Creation porcelain powder, Cercon Ceram Kiss, and IPS e.max ZirPress. Thirty spacimens were prepared using Creation porcelain powder, veneered 3mm height and 3mm in diameter, over the metal cores (n=10). Twenty specimens were prepared using Cercon Ceram Kiss and Zirpress, veneered 3mm height and 3mm in diameter, over the zirconia cores (n=10). The shear bond strength test was performed in a universal testing machine with a crosshead speed of 1mm/min. Ultimate shear bond strength data were analyzed with One-way ANOVA and the Scheffe's test (p=.05). Within the limits of this study, the following conclusions were drawn: The mean shear bond strengths (MPa) were: 18.44 for Uni metal VH/Creation (NCUC); 18.72 for Heraenium/Creation (NCHC); 16.23 for Wirobond C/Creation (NCWC); 13.88 for Zirconia core/$110{\mu}m$ $Al_2O_3$ sandblasting/Cercon Ceram Kiss (ZS110P); 14.61 for Zirconia core/No surface treatment/IPS e.max ZirPress (ZNTH). The mean shear bond strength for NCUC (Uni metal VH/Creation), NCHC (Heraenium/Creation) and NCWC (Wirobond C/Creation) were significantly superior to ZS110P (Zirconia core/$110{\mu}m$ $Al_2O_3$ sandblasting/Cercon Ceram Kiss) and ZNTH(Zirconia core/No surface treatment/IPS e.max ZirPress) (p<0.05).

  • To investigate invar alloy as a core material for increased capacity over-head transmission line which have high strength and low thermal expansion coefficient, hardness and thermal expansion coefficient of Fe-Ni-Co alloy have been studied. It is necessary that invar alloy have low thermal expansion coefficient and high strength for increased capacity over-head transmission line. In this paper. we tried to find out the effect of Ni and Co which has ferromagnetic properties and high saturation magnetization. It was found that Ni decrease thermal expansion coefficient and hardness, Co decrease thermal expansion coefficient but increase hardness in Fe-xNi-Co system. In Fe-(29-x)Ni-Co system, the material has no low thermal expansion properties substituting Co instead of Ni in concentration range of $1\sim7$%Co.

  • The microstructure of Al-5%Mg based alloy mainly consists of aluminum matrix with a small amount of AlMn phase. The addition of Sc or Zn to the base alloy significantly improved the as-cast tensile strength, while the addition of Fe deteriorated both strength and ductility. Although the Al-5%Mg based alloy was not heat-treatable, aging hardening could be observed in the case that Sc or Zn was added to the base alloy. TEM analysis showed that very fine AlSc or AlMgZn precipitates were formed after T6 heat treatment, resulting in enhanced strength. The corrosion resistance measured as corrosion potential was found to decrease a little by adding Zn, whereas other alloying elements were not clearly influential.

  • Clogging of sump strainers that filter the recirculation water in containment after a loss-of-coolant accident (LOCA) seriously impedes the continued cooling of nuclear reactor cores. In experiments examining the corrosion of aluminium alloy 6061, a common material in containment equipment, in borated solutions simulating the water chemistry of sump water after a LOCA, we found that Fe-bearing intermetallic particles, which were initially buried in the Al matrix, were progressively exposed as corrosion continued. Their cathodic nature $vis-{\grave{a}}-vis$ the Al matrix provoked continuous trenching around them until they were finally released into the test solution. Such particles released from Al alloy components in a reactor containment after a LOCA will be transported to the sump entrance with the recirculation flow and trapped by the debris bed that typically forms on the strainer surface, potentially aggravating strainer clogging. These Fe-bearing intermetallic particles, many of which had a rod or thin strip-like geometry, were identified to be mainly the cubic phase ${\alpha}_c-Al(Fe,Mn)Si$ with an average size of about $2.15{\mu}m$; 11.5 g of particles with a volume of about $3.2cm^3$ would be released with the dissolution of every 1 kg 6061 aluminium alloy.

  • Toshiba has developed a laser peening system for PWRs(pressurized water reactors) as well after the one for BWRs(boiling water reactors), and applied it for BMI(bottom-mounted instrumentation) nozzles, core deluge line nozzles and primary water inlet nozzles of Ikata Unit 1 and 2 of Shikoku Electric Power Company since 2004, which are Japanese operating PWR power plants. Laser pulses were delivered through twin optical fibers and irradiated on two portions in parallel to reduce operation time. For BMI nozzles, we developed a tiny irradiation head for small tubes and we peened the inner surface around J-groove welds after laser ultrasonic testing (LUT) as the remote inspection, and we peened the outer surface and the weld for Ikata Unit 2 supplementary. For core deluge line nozzles and primary water inlet nozzles, we peened the inner surface of the dissimilar metal welding, which is of nickel base alloy, joining a safe end and a low alloy metal nozzle. In this paper, the development and the actual application of the laser peening system for PWR power plants will be described.
