  • The densification behaviro and resulting properties of cordierite-aluminium titanate composites containing 5 to 40wt.% aluminium titanate were investigated. Compared with cordierite monolithics a substantial increase of sintering temperature range for composites was observed, which was due to the formation of cordierite and glass phase at relatively low temperatures. The bending strength of composites showed its maximum at 30wt.% aluminium titanate content, which was about 50% increase relative to the cordierite monolithics, then decreased by a small amount at 40wt.% aluminium titanate content. The decrease was explained by the increase of microcracks whose presence was confirmed by the hysteresis of thermal expansion curve of composites. However, the microcracks formed was not severe enough to produce a significant decrease in strength, which was also evidenced by the continuous increase of thermal expansion coefficient up to 40wt.% aluminium titanate content.

  • Mullite and cordierite were prepared by the sol-gel route. Boehmite, fumed silica and Mg(NO3)2$.$6H2O were their starting materials. Mullite and cordierite powder were mixed by various weight percent. These mixed sols were ball-milled for 48hrs, dried at 100$^{\circ}C$, pressed, cold isostatic pressed and sintered at 1490$^{\circ}C$ for 2hrs. Mullite-cordierite composites sintered at 1490$^{\circ}C$ for 2hrs had>98% of theoretical density. Bending strength of the sintered bodies were 329-249MPa, dielectric constant 7.1-6.7 at 1MHz and thermal expansion coefficient at 800$^{\circ}C$ was matched with Si in the range of 30-35wt% cordierite.

  • Cordierite powders were prepared by controlled hydrolysis of metal alkoxides with catalysts in water medium without using organic solvents. Water was adjusted to a certain pH by HC1 and NH4OH. $\alpha$-Cordierite powder was prepared from aluminum isopropoxide, tetraethyl orthosilicate and magnesium ethoxide mixed with water adjusted to pH of 3. At water pH of 11, $\alpha$-cordierite, mullite and $\beta$-quartz phases were coexisted. The powders were freeze dried, calcined and then fired at different temperatures. The characteristics of powders were examined by means of DTA, X-ray diffraction, FT-IR, and electron microscopy. It was found that $\alpha$-cordierite could be synthesized at temperature of 120$0^{\circ}C$ from the powders prepared by alkoxides with water medium without organic solvents.

  • Fracture toughness of hot pressed cordierite-SiC whisker ceramic composites contained up to 40vol.% SiC whiskers were determined by using the indentation crack length(IC), indentation strengthin-bending(IS), and single-edge notched-beam(SENB) methods. The results were compared to stress intensity factor, KB, at the crack branching boundary measured by using the mirror zone radius (MZ) method. IS method seems to provide a more reasonable estimation of fracture toughness than other methods for these composites.

  • The fabrication process of the honeycomb filter was investigated using synthesized cordierite with the addition of pore former and extrusion additives (either organic matter or graphite). Also, the effect of additives on the resultant properties of honeycomb filter such as porosity, thermal expansion coefficient and mechanical strength were investigated. With increasing the organic matter up to 10 wt%, porosity was increased but compressive strength was decreased. With increasing the graphite content, however, both porosity and compressive strength were increased. The specimen with an optimum processing condition (C-17A30G, sintering at $1150^{\circ}C$) was demonstrated 59% in porosity, 69 MPa in compressive strength, and $2.4{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C\;(25{\sim}1000^{\circ}C$) in thermal expansion coefficient, which physical properties are appropriate for the honeycomb filter applications.

  • Glass systems based on Ca, Sr, Ba, and Zn modified alumino-boro silicates were investigated in order to improve the dielectric and mechanical properties of a typical LTCC (low temperature co-fired ceramic) which was developed for high frequency highly-integrated modules. The glass was prepared by a typical melting procedure and then mixed with cordierite fillers to fabricate glass/ceramic composite-type LTCC materials. The amount of cordierite filler was fixed at 50 volumetric%. For an optimal glass composition of 7.5% CaO, 7.5% BaO, 5% ZnO, 10% $Al_2O_3$, 30% $B_2O_3$, and 40% $SiO_2$ in mole ratio, the resultant LTCC composite showed a dielectric constant of 5.8 and a dielectric loss ($tan{\delta}$) of 0.0009 after firing at $900^{\circ}C$. An average bending strength of 160MPa was obtained for the optimal composition.

  • The optimum condition for fabricating cordierite disc type filter element was deduced. Cordierite monolith was used as starting material for filter element because it has many advantages such as high thermal shock resistance and good catalytic activity compared with $TiO_2$and SiC. The contents of organic additives and foaming agent were optimized to control the porosity and mechanical strength of cordierite filter. Among the required properties to be adopted as filter elements, the pressure drop and NOx removal efficiency were investigated depending on processing variables. It was found that pressure drop depends on particle size distribution of cordierite monolith and organic additives added as forming agent. The pressure drop at 5cm/sec of face velocity was in the range of 15~655mm$H_2O$ at room temperature. The NOx removal efficiency of catalytic filter with $V_2O_5$ as catalyst was over 85% at $450^{\circ}C$.

  • Infrared radiators of a cordierite system [cordierite (2MgO.2Al2O3.5SiO2)+30wt% clay+X wt% MnO2 (X=0, 0.1, 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5)] were manufactured by a slurry casting method. Thermal and physical properties of these infrared radiators were studied by the measurement of spectra emissivity, thermal expansion coefficient and apparent density, SEM and EPMA analyses were also carried out. The thermal expansion coefficient and apparent density were decreased with increasing amouonts of MnO2 additives. On the other hand, the spectral emissivity was increased in the wavelength below 4.5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. Also, infrared radiators of the cordierite system, of which the spectral emisivity was 0.8, could be attainable in the wavelength above 4.5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. The infrared radiator of the cordierite system with 2.0wt% MnO2, of which the spectral emissivity was approximately 1.0, could be attainable in the wavelength between 4.5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and 8${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. The spectral emissivity of the specimen containing 2.0wt% MnO2 was higher than others in the wavelength between 8${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and 14${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$.

  • The effect of each factor on the porosity and mean pore size of cordierite(2Mg$.$2{{{{ {Al}_{2 } {O }_{3 } }}$.$5{{{{ {SiO}_{2 } }}) ceram-ics which have been mainly used for hot gas filter was investigated by using orthogonal array. The poros-ity was observed to increase with the content of graphite added as pore-forming material and decrease with increasing talc size. The effects of the other factors the graphite size sintering temperature and hold-ing time at sintering temperature were observed to be small relatively. In case of mean pore size the ef-fect of talc size on the mean pore size of cordierity was investigated to be the largest. The mean pore size was observed to increase with increasing talc size.
