Fused deposition modeling (FDM), based on stacking a continuous filament of polymer or composite materials, is well matured and is thus widely used in additive manufacturing technology. To advance FDM-based 3D printing technology, the mechanical properties of additively manufactured composite materials must be improved. In this study, we proposed a novel FDM 3D printing process using metal wire-polymer composites, enabling enhanced mechanical properties. In addition, we developed a new type FDM filament of copper wire wrapped in nylon material for stable 3D printing without thermal damage during the printing process. After FDM printing of the copper wire-nylon composite filament, we conducted a tensile test to investigate the mechanical behavior of the printed composite materials. The experimental results confirmed that the tensile strength of the 3D-printed metal wire-polymer composites was higher than that of the conventional single polymer material. Thus, we expect that the FDM printing process developed in this study may be promising for high-load-bearing applications.
In this study, shielding analysis of material and thickness of 3D printer filaments was performed for the manufacture of custom shielding by radiation workers during outdoor radiographic test. The shielding was attached to the ICRU Slab Phantom after selecting the voxel source $^{192}Ir$ and $^{75}Se$ through simulation using MCNPX, and the distance between the source and the slab Phantom was set at 100 cm. The 12 shielding materials were divided into 5 mm units up to 200 mm from the absence of shielding materials to evaluate the energy absorbed per unit mass of each shielding material. The results showed that the shielding effect was high in the order of ABS + Tungsten, ABS + Bismuth, PLA + Copper, PLA + Iron from all sources of radiographic test. However, compared to lead, the shielding effect was somewhat lower. Based on this study in the future, further study of the atomic number and the high density filament material is necessary.
In this study, the design analysis and the explosion welding were made into a clad sheet by the convergence method in order to solve the problem of heat transfer to the guide due to the heating of the 3D printer heating block. The shear strength of the clad plate material was tested and the results were analyzed by thermal analysis, thermal conductivity and thermal imaging. The following conclusions were obtained. 3D modeling of the heating block made of copper and titanium clad plate material The thermal analysis showed that the surface temperature of the filament guide area was lower than the heating block surface temperature. The average shear strength of copper and titanium clad plate material was measured and the average value of 195.6MPa was obtained. The thermal conductivity of the heating block made of copper and titanium clad plate material was measured three times and the average value was $62.52W/m{\cdot}K$. The surface temperature of the heating block made of copper and titanium clad plate material was measured by a thermal imaging camera at a maximum of $107.3^{\circ}C$ and $183.2^{\circ}C$ at the filament guide. The temperature distribution was $89^{\circ}C$ lower than that of the existing filament.
The WSS lateral examination is important for diagnosing spinal disorders. Recently, long-length detectors for large-area diagnose have been popularized to effectively reduce the exposure dose and examination time. It can be applied very efficiently to examinations of patients with high risk of falls, children, and adolescents. However, since the image is acquired through a single irradiation, the volume of cervical vertebra is relatively smaller than the lumbar due to the geometrical anatomy of the spine. Therefore, this study intends to fabricate an additional filter using 3D printing technology and copper filament to obtain uniform image quality in the WSS lateral examination and to analyze the results. 3D printing technology is able to easily print a desired shape, so it is widely used in the entire industrial field, and recently, a copper filament has been developed to confirm the possibility as an additional filter. In the WSS lateral examination, CNR and SNR were excellently measured when the additional filter was applied, confirming the possibility of using the additional filter.
In the medical field, radiation provides information for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. As the use of radiation increases and the risk of exposure increases, interest in radiation protection is also rapidly increasing. Lead shielding material is mainly used, which has a risk of lead poisoning and absorption into the body. Tungsten mixed filament shielding sheets were fabricated with a size of 70 × 70 mm and a thickness of 1, 2, and 4 mm by using a 3D printer. In the general shooting experiment, the thickness of the shielding sheet is 1 ~ 5mm, the tube voltage is 60, 80, 100, 120 kVp and the tube current is 20, 40 mAs. In general photography, Tungsten showed better shielding rate compared to Brass, Copper, and Lead protective tools under all irradiation conditions, and in particular, Tungsten 5 mm showed 100% shielding rate. The 3D-printed tungsten mixed filament shielding is expected to be used as a new shield that can replace the existing lead protection tools as it shows a better shielding rate than the existing lead protection tools in Radiography.

We have fabricated and tested a Bi-based high temperature superconducting current lead system. Ag sheathed Bi-2223 mono-filament tapes of $I_c=8.4$ A at 77 K under self-field condition were fabricated using powder-in-tube(P1T) method. Multi-layer current leads can be made by stacking of Ag sheathed Bi-2223 mono-filament wires. The critical current of this 10-layer current lead is about 68 A. The contact resistance across the copper-current lead interface has been studied using current-voltage characteristics. At temperature below critical temperature the resistive contribution of the interface to the total contact resistance dominates. We have measured AC transport losses in a current lead at 77 K, 60 Hz by a transport method.
Since superconducting wires have no resistance, electromagnets based on the superconducting wires produce no resistive heating with DC current as long as the current does not exceed the critical current of the wire. However, unlike resistive wires, superconducting wires exhibit AC heat loss. Embedding fine superconducting filaments inside copper matrix can reduce this AC loss to an acceptable level and opens the way to AC-capable superconducting coils. Here, we introduce an easy and accurate method to measure AC heat loss from sample superconducting coils by measuring changes in the rate of gas helium outflow from the liquid helium dewar in which the sample coil is placed. This method provides accurate information on total heat loss of a superconducting coil without any size limit, as long as the coil can fit inside the liquid helium dewar. With this method, we have evaluated AC heat loss of two superconducting solenoids, a 180-turn solid NbTi wire with 0.127 mm diameter (NbTi coil) and a 100-turn filamented wire with 1.4 mm diameter where 7 NbTi filaments were embedded in a copper matrix with copper to NbTi ratio of 6.7:1 (NbTi-Cu coil). Both coils were wound on 15 mm-diameter G-10 epoxy tubes. The AC heat losses of the NbTi and NbTi-Cu coils were evaluated as $53{\pm}4.7\;{\mu}W/A^2Hzcm^3$ and $0.67{\pm}0.16\;{\mu}W/A^2Hzcm^3$, respectively.
The microstructure of Cu-24 wt.%Ag filamentary nanocomposite fabricated by a thermo-mechanical process has been investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations. This study is focused on the stability of Ag filaments formed by cold drawing; the effects of thermal treatment on the precipitation behavior and distribution of Ag-rich precipitates were also investigated. The Ag filaments elongated along the <111> orientation were observed in Cu-rich ${\alpha}$ phase of the as-drawn specimen and the copper matrix and the silver filament have a cube on cube orientation relationship. Annealing at temperatures lower than $200^{\circ}C$ for the as-drawn specimen caused insignificant change of the fibrous morphology but squiggly interfaces or local breaking of the elongated Ag filaments were easily observed with annealing at $300^{\circ}C$. When samples were annealed at $400^{\circ}C$, discontinuous precipitation was observed in supersaturated Cu solid solution. Ag precipitates with a thickness of 7-20 nm were observed along the <112> direction and the orientation relationship between the copper matrix and the Ag precipitates maintained the same orientation relationship in the as-drawn specimen. The interface between the copper matrix and the Ag precipitates is parallel to {111} and micro-twins were observed in the Ag precipitates.

Long-bone examination is mainly used for inspection of the lower extremities. Recently, a long length detector (FXRD-1751S, VIEWORKS, Korea) with three digital detectors attached has been developed. High energy X-rays are used because pelvic areas require high image quality. In this case, X-rays are transmitted a lot in thin areas such as an ankle, and it is not suitable for diagnosing an image. Therefore, this study use copper filters made with 3D printers to increase image quality in the Long-bone inspection. A copper filter was manufactured in consideration of the overall thickness of the lower part. The experiment was conducted in anterior-posterior (AP) and lateral (LAT) positions, depending on the presence or absence of the filter. 5x5 pixels of region of interest (ROI) were selected from the pelvis, knee, and ankle areas. X-rays were irradiated under the conditions of 70 kVp and 40 mAs for AP, 80 kVp, and 63 mAs for lat when without filters, 90 kVp and 80 mAs for AP, 90 kVp and 100 mAs for lat when with filters. signal to noise ratio(SNR) ratio and contrast to noise (CNR) values were measured 1106.38, 14.34 before applying the filter and 1189.32, 70.43 after the filter. For the knee area, 650.44, 97.61 before applying the filter, and 1013.17, 444.24 after applying the filter. For the ankle area, 206.65, 23.68 before applying the filter and 993.50, 136.11 after applying the filter. In the Long-bone examination, SNR and CNR were greatly measured when the filter was applied, confirmed the availability of using the copper additional filter.
In this study, based on PLA, we analyzed the Hounsfield Unit (HU) of materials containing 20% each of aluminum, wood, copper, carbon, and marble, and tried to analyze how they affect the image. A cylindrical phantom of 5×30×30 ㎣ (thickness×diameter×height) was fabricated using a entry-level 3D printer. The kV was changed to 80, 100 and 120, and the mAs was changed to 100 and 200 mAs, and the phantom in the center of the table was cross-scanned under a total of six conditions. A circular ROI was set using image J program and the quantification value of the material part HU and the quantification value of the peripheral part CNR were obtained. The HU average of the material part increased in the order of [PLA - wood 20%], [PLA - marble 20%], [PLA - carbon 20%], [PLA 100%], [PLA - aluminum 20%], [PLA - copper 20%] (p<0.05) a negative correlation was confirmed with the HU by increasing kV. It was confirmed that the CNR value in the peripheral area increased in the order of [PLA - marble 20%], [PLA - copper 20%], [PLA - carbon 20%], [PLA - wood 20%], [PLA - aluminum 20%], and [PLA - 100%] (p<0.05). Human organs with similar HU values for each material are [PLA - copper 20%] compact bone, [PLA - aluminum 20%] cancellous bone, [PLA 100%] coagulated blood, [PLA - carbon 20%] and [PLA - marble 20%] liver, muscle, spleen and [PLA - wood 20%] had similar values to fat. In addition, we confirmed the blur phenomenon that blurs the image around the filament with all materials, and confirmed that [PLA 100%] especially has the most blur around the filament. Therefore, it is considered desirable to reflect the HU value of the target organ and consider cloudiness around the phantom when selecting materials for medical phantom fabrication, and this research can provide basic data.
