  • Copper oxide is a multi-functional material being used in various research areas including catalysis, electrochemical materials, oxidizing agents etc. Among these areas, we have synthesized and utilized graphene based copper oxide nanocomposites (CuOx/Graphene) for the catalytic applications (C-N cross coupling reaction). Briefly, Cu precursors were anchored on the graphite oxide(GO) sheets being exfoliated and oxidized from graphite powder. Two different crystalline structures of Cu2O and CuO on graphene and GO were prepared by annealing them in Ar and O2 environments, respectively. The morphological and electronic structures were systemically investigated using FT-IR, XRD, XPS, XAFS, and TEM. Here, we demonstrate that the catalytic performance was found to depend on oxidative states and morphological structures of CuOx graphene nanocomposites. The relationship between the structure of copper oxides and catalytic efficiency toward C-N cross coupling reaction will be discussed.

  • In this study, semi-aqueous solutions containing carboxylic acids such as oxalic acid (OA), lactic acid (LA) and citric acid (CA) were formulated for the removal of copper etching residues produced at the interconnection process, and their characteristics were analyzed. Carboxylic acids in the solutions were apt to form various copper complexes according to the value of pH. Semi-aqueous solution containing 10 wt% CA showed the lowest etching rate of copper in the range from pH2 to pH7 and the highest selectivity in the range of pH 2 to pH 4. However, the cleaning solution containing 10 wt% LA revealed the superior selectivity at the range from pH 5 to pH 7. Appropriate selection of carboxylic acid should be required to improve the performance of cleaning solution. In the case of CA, the etching selectivity of copper oxide complex to copper was increased with the concentration of CA in the solution, when the solutions contain over 5 wt% CA, the copper interconnection layer has a metallic copper surface more than 88% in the area. The result shows that CA contained semi-aqueous solution has a relatively good cleaning ability.

  • In this paper a transmission electron microscope (TEM) observation of fine Cu precipitates distributed randomly in Al-2.5Cu-1.5Mg wt.% alloy is first reported. This new observation happened to occur when an ion milling was peformed to remove oxides on the specimen, particularly, aged 100 hours at $150^{\circ}C$. Meanwhile the oxides were identified to be $Cu_2O$ particles. For this work involved with analysis of diffraction rings, the formulation of the electron diffraction rings pattern for powder particles was made. Finally the significance of this unexpected ion milling effort on the alloy was discussed

  • Copper is cost-effective and abundantly available as a biocidal coating agent for a wide range of material surfaces. Natural oxidation does not compromise the efficacy of copper, allowing it to maintain antimicrobial activity under prolonged exposure conditions. Furthermore, copper compounds exhibit a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity against pathogenic yeast, both enveloped and non-enveloped types of viruses, as well as gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. Contact killing of copper-coated surfaces causes the denaturation of proteins and damage to the cell membrane, leading to the release of essential components such as nucleotides and cytoplasm. Additionally, redox-active copper generates reactive oxygen species (ROS), which cause permanent cell damage through enzyme deactivation and DNA destruction. Owing to its robust stability, copper has been utilized in diverse forms, such as nanoparticles, ions, composites, and alloys, resulting in the creation of various coating methods. This mini-review describes representative coating processes involving copper ions and copper oxides on various material surfaces, highlighting the antibacterial and antiviral properties associated with different oxidation states of copper.

  • Due to naturally formed copper oxides, the adhesion strength between copper and epoxy resin is often very poor. To improve the adhesion strength between copper and epoxy resin, Cu-based leadframe sheets were oxidized in a brown-oxide forming solution. Then the effect of brown-oxide formation on the adhesion strength of leadframe to epoxy molding compound (EMC) was studied using pull-out specimens. After the pull-out test, fracture surfaces were analyzed using SEM, AES and EDS to determine failure path. The results showed that the failure path lay over inside the CuO and inside the EMC irrespective of the pull strength.

  • The LDS(Laser Direct Structuring) is one of the new direct writing methods to fabricate conductive patterns by energy beam. It uses thermoplastic polymers with an additive compound that serves as plating seed after the activation by laser. The advantages of LDS include the miniaturization of electrical components, design flexibility, and a reduced number of production steps. The purpose of this study is to investigate the fundamental mechanism for LDS and the characteristics of conductive patterns by laser parameters. These results were studied by SEM, EDX, and XPS analysis. We have used a 20W pulse-modulated fiber laser and copper electroless plating to fabricate conductive patterns on polymer. The result showed that electroless copper plating seed caused the laser cracking of additive compound. In particular, the additive compound contained in copper metal oxides atoms will be changed to copper metal elements. Also, the characteristics of conductive patterns were dependent on laser parameter, especially laser fluence.

  • In this study, amine and metal oxide additives were investigated to improve $CO_2$ adsorption capacity of activated carbons (ACs). The characteristics of surface modified ACs were studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), $N_2$ adsorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and BET. Amine surface treatment decreased specific surface area and pore volume of ACs, but increased alkalinity by the incorporated nitrogen functional groups. Adsorption capacities of amine functionalized ACs was larger than original ACs, because basic group which can react with $CO_2$ was grafted on the ACs surface. Presence of copper oxides on ACs also enhances the carbon dioxide adsorption. The copper oxides could increase the adsorption rate of carbon dioxides due to the acid-base interaction (or electron acceptor-donor interaction). It was found that copper oxide loading was a promising method to improve the $CO_2$ adsorption capacity of ACs.

  • Catalytic combustion of benzene over $CeO_2$-supported copper oxides has been investigated. The supported copper oxides catalysts were prepared using ball mill method and characterized by XRD, FT-IR, TEM and TPR. In the CuO/$CeO_2$ catalysts prepared using ball mill method, highly dispersed copper oxide species were shown at high loading ratio. The CuO/$CeO_2$ prepared using ball mill method showed the higher activity than those prepared using impregnation method. The catalytic activity increased with an increase in the CuO loading ratio, 10 wt% loaded CuO/$CeO_2$ catalyst giving the highest activity. In addition, the promoting of 10 wt% loaded CuO/$CeO_2$ catalyst with $Fe_2O_3$ and CoO enhanced the dispersion of CuO and then increased the catalytic activity.

  • Photoelectrochemical (PEC) cells can convert solar energy, the largest potential source of renewable energy, into hydrogen fuel which can be stored, transported, and used on demand. In terms of cost competitiveness compared with fossil fuels, however, both photocatalytic efficiency and cost-effectiveness must be achieved simultaneously. Improvement of cost-effective, scalable, versatile, and eco-friendly fabrication methods has emerged as an urgent mission for PEC cells, and solution-based fabrication methods could be capable of meeting these demands. Herein, we review recent challenges for various nanostructured oxide photoelectrodes fabricated by solution-based processes. Hematite, tungsten oxide, bismuth vanadate, titanium oxide, and copper oxides are the main oxides focused on, and various strategies have been attempted with respect to these photocatalyst materials. The effects of nanostructuring, heterojunctions, and co-catalyst loading on the surface are discussed. Our review introduces notable solution-based processes for water splitting photoelectrodes and gives an outlook on eco-friendly and cost-effective approaches to solar fuel generation and innovative artificial photosynthesis technologies.
