A farming area located near an abandoned copper mine in GuPo-ri, Choongchung province is heavily contaminated with heavy metals such as As, Pb, Cd, Cu and Zn of which concentrations are higher than the values typically detected in Korean soil environment. In this work, laboratory and field studies were conducted to examine feasibility of using Ca-citrate-phosphate solution in stabilizing heavy metals in the polluted soils. In laboratory batch experiments with field soil, the addition of Ca-citrate-phosphate solution resulted in decrease of aqueous phase concentration of phosphate and improvement of heavy metal stabilization, compared to those for sterilized soil samples. This indicates that microbial uptake of phosphate may have provided positive effects on availability of phosphate toward heavy metal stabilization. According to microbial community analysis for the field experiment, the use of Ca-citrate-phosphate led to increased diversity of microbial populations, and strict anaerobic microorganisms such as Anaerofilum and Treponema became the most dominant populations in the solution-amended field experiments. These findings suggest that, when Ca-citrate-phosphate is used for heavy metal stabilization in soils, microbial processes may have important roles in improving the stabilization of heavy metals by providing reducing conditions to the treatment locations or/and by making phosphate available to heavy metal stabilization.
The consumption of foods rich in TDF should not be associated with impaired mineral absorp-tion and long-term mineral status. In surveys of populations consuming high amounts of TDF e.g Third World populations and vegetarinas gross deficiencies in mineral nutrition have not been noted. If mineral status is low among these groups it is most likely caused by the inadequacy or imbalance of the diet and not by the TDF. The key word is interaction which should be inte-rpreted in dietary imbalances that produce nut-rient deficiencies. There are no strong data to support the concept that TDF inhibits mineral absorption through a binding chelation mechanism. Limited data sug-gest that positively charged groups on polymers such as chitosan and cholestyramine will decrease iron absorption in humans and animals. Because TDF does not contain positively charged groups future research should be directed at the possible role of protein consumed along with TDF and the combination of effects on mineral nutrition Phytic acid is acknowledged as a potent chela-tor of zinc. However its association with zinc and its propensity to lower Zn bioavaiability may enhance the absorption of other elements notably copper and iron. The importance of interactions among nutrients including TDF will gain addi-tional attention in the scientific community. Soluble and insoluble dietary fiber function di-fferently in the intestine. Insoluble fibers accele-rate movement through the intestine. Soluble die-tary fibers appear to regulated blood concentra-tions of glucose and cholesterol albeit by some unknown mechanism. In creased viscosity produ-ced by the SDF in the intestine may provide an explanation of how this class of polymers affects plasma glucose cholesterol and other nutrients. Employing a double-perfusion technique in the rat we demonstrated that viscosity produced by SDF will delay transfer of zinc into the circulatory system. This delayed absorption should not be interpreted as decreased utilization. A great deal of additional research is required to prove the importance of luminaly viscosity produced by SDF on slowing nutrient absorption or regulating bllod nutrient homeostasis. Increased intake of TDF in the total human diet appears desirable. A dietary intake of 35g/day should not be considered to have a negative effect on mineral absorption. It is important to educate people that an intake of more than 35g TDF/day may cause an imbalance in the diet that can adve-rsely affect mineral utilization. Acknowledgments. The information related to the heavy metal pollution in the environment was obtained from studies on the effects of pH, phosphate and soil properties on the adsorption of metal ions (Cd, Cu, Ni, and Zn) by soils. Three soil materials; soil 1 with low CEC (8.2 me/100g) and low organic carbon content (0.34%); soil 2 with high CEC (36.4 me/100g) and low organic carbon content (1.8%) and soil 3 with high CEC (49.9 me/100g) and high organic carbon content (14.7%) were used. Soils were adjusted to several pH's and equilibrated with metal ion mixtures of 4 different concentrations, each having equal equivalents of each metal ion (0.63, 1.88, 3.12 and 4.38 micromoles per one gram soil with and without 10 micromoles of phosphate per one gram soil). Reported here are the results of the equilibrium study on soil I. The rest of the results on soil 2 and soil 3 will be repoted subsequeutly. Generally higher metal ion concentration solution resulted in higher final metal ion concentrations in the equilibrated solution and phosphate had minimal effect except it tended to enhance removal of cadmium and zinc from equilibrated solutions while it tended to decrease the removal of copper and nickel. In soil 1, percentages of added metal ions removed at pH 5.10 were; Cu 97, Ni 69, Cd 63, and Zn 55, while increasing pH to 6.40, they were increased to Cu 90.9, Zn 99, Ni 96, and Cd 92 per As initial metal ion concentration increased, final metal ion concentrations in the equilibrated solution showed a relationship with pH of the system as they fit to the equation $p[M^{++}]=a$ pH+b where $p[M^{++}]=-log$[metal ion concentration in Mol/liter]. The magnitude of pH and soil effects were reflected in slope (a) of the equation, and were different among metal ions and soils. Slopes (a) for metal ions in the aqueous system are all 2. In soil 1 they were; Zn 1.23, Cu 0.99, Ni 0.69 and Cd 0.59 at highest concentration. The adsorption of Cd, Ni, and Zn in soil 1 could be represented by the Iangmuir isotherm. However, construction of the Iangmuir isotherm required the correction for pH differences.

Scale induced by hardness materials in water must be controled because of it can be result in remarkable damages of pipeline as well as water quality deterioration. Especially hot water system is one of scale management required facility as scale formation can be accelerated by temperature. The scale control performance of frequency driver (FD) was tested instead of existing methods such as chemical, physical and electromagnetic methods which needs chemicals and electric power. Three kinds of pipe coupons were submerged in test water with 500 mg/L of hardness for 33 days and XRD and SEM were analysed for comparing scale formation characteristics of these coupons. Calcite ($CaCO_3$) which came from hardness of water was formed on only cast iron pipe coupon and this coupon showed higher corrosion rate than copper and stainless steel pipe coupon. Hot water circulating system connected cast iron pipe with and without FD was operated with 300 mg/L of hardness water at $50^{\circ}C$ for monitoring of scale formation and water quality with and without FD. XRD showed that FD leaded to magnetite ($Fe_3O_4$) scale which is good scale for preventing corrosion than calcite and SEM image also indicated the scale control effect of FD. Scales of 16% on pipe joint, 14% on pipe length, and 42% on heat exchanger decreased with FD comparing scales of those parts without FD. From the results of water quality, FD reduced crystallization of hardness material without chemical reaction in water and it can indicate that FD is safe and proenvironmental technology for scale reduction.

Indigenous species are needed for more accurate toxicity assessments in tropical regions. Thus, we determined not only the optimum culture conditions for stable maintenance of Nitocra sp. isolated from tropical regions but also the availability of copepods for marine ecotoxicological evaluation. Experiments on temperature, salinity, and diet as factors for optimum culture conditions as well as acute and chronic toxicity tests for ecotoxicological assessment were carried out. Data on optimum culture conditions were analyzed for statistically significant observations using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). Optimum temperature and salinity for Nitocra sp. were $29^{\circ}C$ and 24~39‰, and Nitocra sp. fed Tetraselmis suecica had relatively faster development and higher survival than other microalga. Under optimum culture conditions, toxicity tests were carried out. The $LC_{50}$ level and NOEC (no observed effect concentration) levels of copper and arsenic were calculated in the acute toxicity test. In the chronic test of Cu and As, developmental time and survival traits were usable endpoints for toxicity assessments. As a result, tropical copepod Nitocra sp. seems to be a potential candidate organism for marine ecotoxicological evaluation.
The reaction of methanol-water mixture to $CO_2$ and $H_2$ on alkaline earth metal-copper-zinc oxide has been studied in the temperature range of 150 ${\sim}\;300^{\circ}C$. Generally the addition of the alkaline earth metal to Cu/ZnO resulted in an enhancement of selectivity for $CO_2$ formation and a reduction of catalytic activity. Measurable activities were found from 150$^{\circ}C$, 200$^{\circ}C$, and 250$^{\circ}C$ on Mg/Cu/ZnO, Ca/Cu/ZnO, and Ba/Cu/ZnO respectively. However, the highest selectivity for $CO_2$ formation was observed in Ba/Cu/ZnO catalyst at 250$^{\circ}C$. The effect of alkaline earth metal or ZnO on the reactivity was investigated using temperature programmed desorption of $CO_2$ or temperature programmed reduction with $H_2$ over catalysts respectively. It was found that $CO_2$ interacts more strongly in the sequence of MgO < CaO < BaO and ZnO decereases the reduction temperature of CuO. From the results, it was suggested that ZnO activates $H_2$ in the redox process of Cu component and alkaline earth metals adsorbs $CO_2$ in the catalytic process.

Natural convection heat transfer experiments from two parallel horizontal cylinders were performed varying the Pitch-to-Diameter ratio (P/D) of 1.02-9 at Sc of 2,014 to 8,334 and $Ra_D$ of $1.5{\times}10^8$ to $4.5{\times}10^{10}$. Mass transfer experiments that are analogous to the heat transfer experiments were performed using copper electroplating system. In all cases, the measured heat transfer rates for the lower cylinder agreed well with the existing heat transfer correlations developed from a single cylinder. For laminar flows, the measured heat transfer rates of the upper cylinder were less than those of the lower cylinder at P/D less than about 1.5. However, as the P/D increased, the heat transfer rates of the upper cylinder increased. For turbulent flows, the heat transfer rates of the upper cylinder were considerably similar to those of the lower cylinder when the P/D is approximately unity. In contrast, as the P/D increased, the heat transfer rates of the upper cylinder were always higher than those of the lower cylinder.
The priorities of siting restriction was derived from quantification of environmental hazard according to industrial classification based on 'Chemical Ranking and Scoring System(CRS)' which is handling the discharge characteristics of 31 industrial classifications regulated from locating at 'Industrial Complex in Rural Area(ICRA)'. CRS that is utilizing the data of 'Pollutant Release and Transfer Registers(PRTR)' is applied to determine human health risk and ecological risk which are calculated by discharged amount and materials $LC_{50}$ according to water, soil and air media based on industrial classification. From this process, exposure assessment and toxicity assessment for integrating the adverse environmental impact and the mitigation effect of environmental risk according to the development of environmental technologies into establishing the rational landuse management method for the 31 industrial classifications regulated from locating at ICRA was analyzed. From the assessment result of the siting restriction removal at ICRA for 31 industrial classifications, based on 2012 year reference 6 industries that includes Manufacture of Guilt Coloration Surface Processing Steel Materials, Manufacture of Biological Product, Manufacture of Smelting Refining and Alloys of Copper, Dyeing and Finishing of Fibers and Yarns, Manufacture of Other Basic Iron and Steel n.e.c., Rolling Drawing and Extruding of Non-ferrous Metals n.e.c. are calculated as having relatively lower environmental hazards, thus it is judged that the siting restriction mitigation at ICRA is possible for the 6 industrial classifications that are not discharging the specific hazardous water contaminants during manufacturing process.
This study was conducted to evaluate the antifungal activity of 19 agro-materials that have been registered for organic cultivation in Korea, after inoculation of pear leaves with Venturia nashicola and Gymnosporangium asiaticum. In V. nashicola, most of the nine agro- materials containing sulfur and copper completely inhibited spore germination, and some of the spores that germinated did not form appressoria. However, in only lime sulfur, Neobordeaux (cupric sulfate), and Wheengaris (sulfur)showed antifungal activity against G. asiaticum. Among the agro-materials containing plant extracts, Wheengarujaba (wood vinegar+spirits+rhubarb) inhibited conidial germination in V. nashicola and G. asiaticum by 100% and 71.6%, respectively. Among the agro-materials containing antifungal microorganisms, Cheongotan (Streptomyces griseus) reduced spore germination rate of V. nashicola to 88.8%; moreover, formation of appressoria or intracellular accumulation was not observed. Application of Topsid (Paenibacillus polymyxa) reduced spore germination rates in V. nashicola and G. asiaticum to 71.0% and 90.6%, respectively, and the formation of appressoria was not observed. Studying the antifungal activity of agro-materials because of cumulative applications under the field conditions is necessary, owing to their contact fungicidal effect and the induced-resistance by microbial metabolites and natural compounds.
This study was conducted to investigate chemical and sensory characteristics of boiled soup extracted from crossbred ogol chicken as affected by the level of Flavourzyme produced from Aspergillus oryzae and composed with endo-proteinase(674U/g) and exoproteinase(8,053U/g). It was hydrolyzed by different concentrations of the protease enzyme (Flavourzyme)(0%(Control), 0.01%(T$_2$), 0.1%(T$_3$) and 0.5%(T$_4$)) at 45$^{\circ}C$ for 4hrs. Manufacture of the extract was performed by boiling treated meats with medicinal herbs(Sipchun daebo) at a higher pressure condition. Minerals, free amino acid content, sensory properties of the extract were as follows. The sodium contents were increased as the treatment levels of enzyme increased. The iron contents were lowest when the enzyme treated by 0.5% level, however there were not significantly different among the treatments. The copper and mangan contents had no significantly different among the enzyme treatment levels. Higher contents of fee amino acid were observed as the amount of the protease increased with the treatment of higher than 0.1% enzyme, no significant effect was observed. In sensory properties, the extract manufactured by addition of 0.01∼0.1% of Flavourzyme resulted in a similar or better appearance, flavor, taste and overall palatabilitycompared to control(no enzyme treatment). However, the extract manufactured with 0.5% of Flavourzyme resulted in lower scores in appearance, flavor, taste and overall palatability than the control. In addition, this product showed more off-flavor than control.
