In this paper, the behavior of a crack between two half-planes of functionally graded materials subjected to arbitrary tractions is resolved using a somewhat different approach, named the Schmidt method. To make the analysis tractable, it is assumed that the Poisson's ratios of the mediums are constants and the shear modulus vary exponentially with coordinate parallel to the crack. By use of the Fourier transform, the problem can be solved with the help of two pairs of dual integral equations in which the unknown variables are the jumps of the displacements across the crack surfaces. To solve the dual integral equations, the jumps of the displacements across the crack surfaces are expanded in a series of Jacobi polynomials. This process is quite different from those adopted in previous works. Numerical examples are provided to show the effect of the crack length and the parameters describing the functionally graded materials upon the stress intensity factor of the crack. It can be shown that the results of the present paper are the same as ones of the same problem that was solved by the singular integral equation method. As a special case, when the material properties are not continuous through the crack line, an approximate solution of the interface crack problem is also given under the assumption that the effect of the crack surface interference very near the crack tips is negligible. It is found that the stress singularities of the present interface crack solution are the same as ones of the ordinary crack in homogenous materials.
Most factories deal with toxic or flammable chemicals in their industrial processes. These hazardous substances pose a risk of leakage due to accidents, such as fire and explosion. In the event of chemical release, massive casualties and property damage can result; hence, quantitative risk prediction and assessment are necessary. Several methods are available for evaluating chemical dispersion in the atmosphere, and most analyses are considered neutral in dispersion models and under far-field wind condition. The foregoing assumption renders a model valid only after a considerable time has elapsed from the moment chemicals are released or dispersed from a source. Hence, an initial dispersion model is required to assess risk quantitatively and predict the extent of damage because the most dangerous locations are those near a leak source. In this study, the dispersion model for initial consequence analysis was developed with three-dimensional unsteady advective diffusion equation. In this expression, instantaneous leakage is assumed as a puff, and wind velocity is considered as a coordinate transform in the solution. To minimize the buoyant force, ethane is used as leaked fuel, and two different diffusion coefficients are introduced. The calculated concentration field with a molecular diffusion coefficient shows a moving circular iso-line in the horizontal plane. The maximum concentration decreases as time progresses and distance increases. In the case of using a coefficient for turbulent diffusion, the dispersion along the wind velocity direction is enhanced, and an elliptic iso-contour line is found. The result yielded by a widely used commercial program, ALOHA, was compared with the end point of the lower explosion limit. In the future, we plan to build a more accurate and general initial risk assessment model by considering the turbulence diffusion and buoyancy effect on dispersion.

Plastic pollution has been recognized as a serious environmental problem, and microbial degradation of plastics is a potential, environmentally friendly solution to this. Here, we analyzed and compared microbial communities on waste plastic films (WPFs) buried for long periods at four landfill sites with those in nearby soils to identify microbes with the potential to degrade plastics. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy spectra of these WPFs showed that most were polyethylene and had signs of oxidation, such as carbon-carbon double bonds, carbon-oxygen single bonds, or hydrogen-oxygen single bonds, but the presence of carbonyl groups was rare. The species richness and diversity of the bacterial and fungal communities on the films were generally lower than those in nearby soils. Principal coordinate analysis of the bacterial and fungal communities showed that their overall structures were determined by their geographical locations; however, the microbial communities on the films were generally different from those in the soils. For the pulled data from the four landfill sites, the relative abundances of Bradyrhizobiaceae, Pseudarthrobacter, Myxococcales, Sphingomonas, and Spartobacteria were higher on films than in soils at the bacterial genus level. At the species level, operational taxonomic units classified as Bradyrhizobiaceae and Pseudarthrobacter in bacteria and Mortierella in fungi were enriched on the films. PICRUSt analysis showed that the predicted functions related to amino acid and carbohydrate metabolism and xenobiotic degradation were more abundant on films than in soils. These results suggest that specific microbial groups were enriched on the WPFs and may be involved in plastic degradation.
This study discusses the long-term deformation monitoring and shape sensing of bridge girder surfaces with an automated extraction scheme for point clouds in the Region Of Interest (ROI), invariant to the position of a Light Detection And Ranging system (LiDAR). Advanced smart construction necessitates continuous monitoring of the deformation and shape of bridge girders during the construction phase. An automated scheme is proposed for reconstructing geometric model of ROI in the presence of noisy non-stationary background. The proposed scheme involves (i) denoising irrelevant background point clouds using dimensions from the design model, (ii) extracting the outer boundaries of the bridge girder by transforming and processing the point cloud data in a two-dimensional image space, (iii) extracting topology of pre-defined targets using the modified Otsu method, (iv) registering the point clouds to a common reference frame or design coordinate using extracted predefined targets placed outside ROI, and (v) defining the bounding box in the point clouds using corresponding dimensional information of the bridge girder and abutments from the design model. The surface-fitted reconstructed geometric model in the ROI is superposed consistently over a long period to monitor bridge shape and derive deflection during the construction phase, which is highly correlated. The proposed scheme of combining 2D-3D with the design model overcomes the sensitivity of 3D point cloud registration to initial match, which often leads to a local extremum.
The present study aims to develop a real-time surface image velocimeter (SIV) using an Android smartphone. It can measure river surface velocity by using its built-in sensors and processors. At first the SIV system figures out the location of the site using the GPS of the phone. It also measures the angles (pitch and roll) of the device by using its orientation sensors to determine the coordinate transform from the real world coordinates to image coordinates. The only parameter to be entered is the height of the phone from the water surface. After setting, the camera of the phone takes a series of images. With the help of OpenCV, and open source computer vision library, we split the frames of the video and analyzed the image frames to get the water surface velocity field. The image processing algorithm, similar to the traditional STIV (Spatio-Temporal Image Velocimeter), was based on a correlation analysis of spatio-temporal images. The SIV system can measure instantaneous velocity field (1 second averaged velocity field) once every 11 seconds. Averaging this instantaneous velocity measurement for sufficient amount of time, we can get an average velocity field. A series of tests performed in an experimental flume showed that the measurement system developed was greatly effective and convenient. The measured results by the system showed a maximum error of 13.9 % and average error less than 10 %, when we compared with the measurements by a traditional propeller velocimeter.

As the security requirements of mobile phones have been increasing, there have been extensive researches using one biometric feature (e.g., an iris, a fingerprint, or a face image) for authentication. Due to the limitation of uni-modal biometrics, we propose a method that combines face and iris images in order to improve accuracy in mobile environments. This paper presents four advantages and contributions over previous research. First, in order to capture both face and iris image at fast speed and simultaneously, we use a built-in conventional mega pixel camera in mobile phone, which is revised to capture the NIR (Near-InfraRed) face and iris image. Second, in order to increase the authentication accuracy of face and iris, we propose a score level fusion method based on SVM (Support Vector Machine). Third, to reduce the classification complexities of SVM and intra-variation of face and iris data, we normalize the input face and iris data, respectively. For face, a NIR illuminator and NIR passing filter on camera are used to reduce the illumination variance caused by environmental visible lighting and the consequent saturated region in face by the NIR illuminator is normalized by low processing logarithmic algorithm considering mobile phone. For iris, image transform into polar coordinate and iris code shifting are used for obtaining robust identification accuracy irrespective of image capturing condition. Fourth, to increase the processing speed on mobile phone, we use integer based face and iris authentication algorithms. Experimental results were tested with face and iris images by mega-pixel camera of mobile phone. It showed that the authentication accuracy using SVM was better than those of uni-modal (face or iris), SUM, MAX, NIN and weighted SUM rules.

This paper proposes the performance evaluation test of attitude heading reference system (AHRS) suitable for small high speed autonomous underwater vehicle(AUV). Although IMU can provides the detail attitude information, it is sometime not suitable for small AUV with short operation time in view of price and the electrical power consumption. One of alternative for tactical grade IMU is the AHRS based micro-machined electro mechanical system(MEMS) which can overcome many problems that have inhibited the adoption of inertial system for small AUV such as cost and power consumption. A cost effective and small size AHRS which incorporates measurements from 3-axis MEMS gyroscopes, accelerometers, and 3-axis magnetometers has been developed to provide a complete attitude solution for AUV and the attitude calculation algorithm is derived based the coordinate transform equation and Kalman filter. The developed AHRS was validated through various performance tests as like the magnetometer calibration, operating experiments using land mobile vehicle and flight motion simulator (FMS). The test of magnetometer calibration shows the developed MEMS AHRS is robust to the external magent field change and the test with land vehicle proves the leveling error of developed MEMS AHRS is below $0.5^{\circ}/hr$. The results of FMS test shows the fact that AHRS provides the measurement with $0.5^{\circ}/hr$ error during 5 minutes operation time. These results of performance evaluation tests showed that the developed AHRS provides attitude information which error of roll and pitch are below $1^{\circ}$ and the error of yaw is below $5^{\circ}$ and satisfies the required specification. It is expected that developed AHRS can provide the precise attitude measurement under sea trial with real AUV.
Surface Image Velocimetry (SIV) is an instrument to measure water surface velocity by using image processing techniques. To improve its measuring accuracy, it is essential to get high quality images with low skewness. A truck-mounted SIV system would be a good way to get images, since its crane gives high altitude to the images. However, the images taken with a truck-mounted SIV would be swayed due to the movement of crane and the camera by winds. In that case, to analyze the images, it is necessary to compensate the side sway in the images. The present study is to develop an algorithm to analyze the swayed images by combining common image processing techniques and coordinate transform techniques. The system follows the traces of some selected fixed points and calculates the displacements of the video camera. By subtracting the average velocity of the fixed points from that of grid points, the velocity fields of the flow can be corrected. To evaluate the system's performance, two image sets were used, one image set without side sway and another set with side sway. The comparison of their results showed very close with the error of around 6 %.

This study presents a technique for assessing the dimensional quality of assembly parts in Prefabricated Steel Structures (PSS) using a stereo vision sensor. The stereo vision system captures images and point cloud data of the assembly area, followed by applying image processing algorithms such as fuzzy-based edge detection and Hough transform-based circular bolt hole detection to identify bolt hole locations. The 3D center positions of each bolt hole are determined by correlating 3D real-world position information from depth images with the extracted bolt hole positions. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is then employed to calculate coordinate axes for precise measurement of distances between bolt holes, even when the sensor and structure orientations differ. Bolt holes are sorted based on their 2D positions, and the distances between sorted bolt holes are calculated to assess the assembly part's dimensional quality. Comparison with actual drawing data confirms measurement accuracy with an absolute error of 1mm and a relative error within 4% based on median criteria.
The technological development and popularization of mobile devices have developed so that users can check their location anywhere and use the Internet. However, in the case of indoors, the Internet can be used smoothly, but the global positioning system (GPS) function is difficult to use. There is an increasing need to provide real-time location information in shaded areas where GPS is not received, such as department stores, museums, conference halls, schools, and tunnels, which are indoor public places. Accordingly, research on the recent indoor positioning technology based on light detection and ranging (LiDAR) equipment is increasing to build a landmark database. Focusing on the accessibility of building a landmark database, this study attempted to develop a technique for estimating the user's location by using a single image taken of a landmark based on a mobile device and the landmark database information constructed in advance. First, a landmark database was constructed. In order to estimate the user's location only with the mobile image photographing the landmark, it is essential to detect the landmark from the mobile image, and to acquire the ground coordinates of the points with fixed characteristics from the detected landmark. In the second step, by applying the bag of words (BoW) image search technology, the landmark photographed by the mobile image among the landmark database was searched up to a similar 4th place. In the third step, one of the four candidate landmarks searched through the scale invariant feature transform (SIFT) feature point extraction technique and Homography random sample consensus(RANSAC) was selected, and at this time, filtering was performed once more based on the number of matching points through threshold setting. In the fourth step, the landmark image was projected onto the mobile image through the Homography matrix between the corresponding landmark and the mobile image to detect the area of the landmark and the corner. Finally, the user's location was estimated through the location estimation technique. As a result of analyzing the performance of the technology, the landmark search performance was measured to be about 86%. As a result of comparing the location estimation result with the user's actual ground coordinate, it was confirmed that it had a horizontal location accuracy of about 0.56 m, and it was confirmed that the user's location could be estimated with a mobile image by constructing a landmark database without separate expensive equipment.
