  • The power consumption of TEC for Laser diode cooling was predicted by 3-D FEM simulation and verified by experiment. The operating conditions such as power consumption of Laser diode, set temperature, ambient temperature, resistance of thermal path was considered to estimate the TEC power consumption. Using 3-D FEM simulation, the relation between TEC configuration defined by the pellet dimension and the number and power consumption was investigated for low power consumption scheme. As a result, as the thermal resistance of the pellet increased, the power consumption decreased.

  • The thermal behavior of power modules is an important criterion for the design of cooling systems and optimum thermal structure of these modules. An important consideration for high power and high frequency design is the spacing between semiconductor devices, substrate structure and influence of the boundary condition in the case. This study focuses on the thermal behavior of hybrid power modules to establish a simplified method that allows temperature estimation in different module components without decapsulation. This study resulted in a correction of the junction temperature values estimated from the transient thermal impedance of each component operating alone. The corrections depend on mutual thermal coupling between different chips of the hybrid structure. A new experimental technique for thermal mutual evaluation is presented. Notably, the classic analysis of thermal phenomena in these structures, which was independent of dissipated power magnitude and boundary conditions in the case, is incorrect.

Study on the Analysis Performance of PVT system using the Dynamic Simulation (동적 시뮬레이션을 이용한 태양광열 시스템의 성능특성 분석)

  • Purpose: A photovoltaic/thermal system is a solar collector combining photovoltaic module with a solar thermal collector, which produces electricity and heat at the same time. PVT system removes heat from PV module through air or liquid that would help to raise the efficiency of the PV systems performance. Many innovative systems and products have been put forward and their quality evaluated by academics and professionals. However, even though various of PVT system were developed and several systems were applied to practical use, there have been few researches for the performance analysis using the dynamic simulation. Method: In this study, the review of recent research and development trend for PVT systems were conducted. Furthermore, in order to develop the optimum design method, the performance analysis for PVT system was conducted by a dynamic simulation. Result: In the results, it was found that the performance of PVT system significantly depends on the ambient temperature and solar radiation. Moreover, in the weather condition of Seoul, average efficiency of electricity and heat in heating season were 13.79 and 41.85%, and they in cooling season were 14.39% and 26.18%, respectively.

  • The low electric power and high efficiency chips are required because of the appearance of smart phones. Also, high-capacity memory chips are needed. e-MMC(embedded Multi-Media Card) for this is defined by JEDEC(Joint Electron Device Engineering Council). The e-MMC memory for research and development is a memory mulit-chip module of 64GB using 16-multilayers of 4GB NAND-flash memory. And it has simplified the chip by using SIP technique. But mulit-chip module generates high heat by higher integration. According to the result of study, whenever semiconductor chip is about 10 $^{\circ}C$ higher than the design temperature it makes the life of the chip shorten more than 50%. Therefore, it is required that we solve the problem of heating value and make the efficiency of e-MMC improved. In this study, geometry of 16-multilayered structure is compared the temperature distribution of four different geometries along the numerical analysis. As a result, it is con finned that a multilayer structure of stair type is more efficient than a multilayer structure of vertical type because a multi-layer structure of stair type is about 9 $^{\circ}C$ lower than a multilayer structure of vertical type.

Effects of the Incidence Angle and Temperature on the Performance of a Thin-Film CIGS Solar Cell for Solar Powered UAVs (태양광무인기를 위한 박막형 태양전지의 입사각 및 온도에 따른 성능분석)

  • This research aims to study the effects of the incidence angle and surface temperature on the power generation performance of a thin-film CIGS solar cell for solar powered unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The test rig consists of a unit CIGS solar cell is installed on a table whose angle is controlled manually. A K-type thermocouple is attached to the solar cell surface for temperature measurements. A solar module analyzer measures the voltage and current generated from the test solar cell. The solar module analyzer also calculates the maximum solar power and efficiency of the solar cell. All test data are acquired in a PC. Test results show that the solar cell efficiency decreases significantly with increasing incidence angle and increasing surface temperature in general. As the incidence angle increases from 0 degree to 90 degree, the solar cell efficiency decreases by 60%. The solar cell efficiency decreases by 10% with increasing solar cell surface temperature from $20^{\circ}C$ to $30^{\circ}C$, for exmaple. The direct cooling method of the solar cell using dry ice decreases dramatically the solar cell surface temperature, thus increasing the solar cell efficiency by 15%.

  • A new RF control system of Pohang Accelerator Laboratory (PAL) storage ring is a subsystem upgraded PAL control system, which is based upon Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System (EPICS). There are 5 control components, Low Level RF System (LRS), Klystron System, Circulator System, Cavity System, Local Cooling Water System (LCW) at the storage ring of PAL. The new RF control system for the storage ring has been under development for one years, first versions of individual VME (Versa Module Europa) Input/output modules under construction and system integration begun. In this system, VMEbus-based hardware is widely used for front-end controllers (FDS), Input/output controller (IOC). A number of Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) and SUN workstations are also used for Operator Interfaces (OPI) in the control system. This paper describes the development VME I/O module to the new control system and how the design of this new system.

  • In this study, we report on a power system developed as a decelerator for a driving module in an electric vehicle. The system is to be mounted in a limited space. The research focus was on development of miniaturization, light weight, and high power density. In particular, we aimed to minimize the layout of existing external components as integrated or built-in, and to maximize the power density by applying optimal cooling technology to increased requirements for developing modular power systems applicable to various OEM models. South Korean automakers ranked fourth in global electric-vehicle sales in 2020, but domestic sales are relatively slow. Despite government's expansion in subsidies for eco-friendly cars, consumers are delaying purchases after 2021 considering the cost-effectiveness of electric vehicles. In major European markets, the demand for electric vehicles exceeded the demand for diesel cars, and sales of hybrid cars, which used to represent eco-friendly cars, are slowing down as Toyota, started selling electric vehicles. In this study, the internal lubrication characteristics of a decelerator installed in an electric vehicle were analyzed in terms of the deceleration time while driving. By selecting the proper oil and oil viscosity, it was confirmed that there is no problem in lubricating the bearings and gears of the decelerator.

Enhance photoelectric efficiency of PV by optical-thermal management of nanofilm reflector

  • Crystalline silicon photovoltaic cells have advantages of zero pollution, large scale and high reliability. A major challenge is that sunlight wavelength with photon energy lower than semiconductor band gap is converted into heat and increase its temperature and reduce its conversion efficiency. Traditional cooling PV method is using water flowing below the modules to cool down PV temperature. In this paper, the idea is proposed to reduce the temperature of the module and improve the energy conversion efficiency of the module through the modulation of the solar spectrum. A spectrally selective nanofilm reflector located directly on the surface of PV is designed, which can reflect sunlight wavelength with low photon energy, and even enhance absorption of sunlight wavelength with high photon energy. The results indicate that nanofilm reflector can reduce spectral reflectivity integral from 9.0% to 6.93% in 400~1100 nm wavelength range, and improve spectral reflectivity integral from 23.1% to 78.34% in long wavelength range. The nanofilm reflector can reduce temperature of PV by 4.51℃ and relatively improved energy conversion efficiency of PV by 1.25% when solar irradiance is 1000 W/m2. Furthermore, the nanofilm reflector is insensitive in sunlight's angle and polarization state, and be suitable for high irradiance environment.

Numerical Analysis for Optimal Design of Heat Exchanger in Air Compressor for Railroad Vehicle (철도차량용 공기압축기의 열교환기 최적 설계를 위한 해석 연구)

  • In this study, we examined the multi-stage piston-type air compressors typically used in a railroad vehicle, and the heat transfer efficiency was analyzed according to the design conditions of the heat exchanger (a compressor component module for cooling the compressed high temperature air). For the fin-tube heat exchanger used in the most air compressors, numerical analysis was performed to analyze heat transfer by defining the various rectangle tube sizes and the number of fin-per-unit area as design variables under the same flow rate of compressed air. Also, this analysis compared the temperature of the compressed air. Regarding environmental conditions for analysis, the flow rate of the external cooling air was measured and the mean value of the values was applied. And a "turbulence model" was considered in both the external flow of the cooling air and the internal flow inside the tube. From the results of analysis, it was found that the change of the aspect ratio value of the tube greatly influences the heat transfer efficiency of the compressed air, and influences if the fin density is relatively small. As a result, the optimum design specifications of the heat exchanger for air compressors were confirmed based on the analysis of the heat transfer efficiency, according to the design conditions of fin and tube by the operating temperature range of the compressed air.

Thermal Analysis of the Heat Sink Performance using FEM (유한 요소법을 이용한 히트싱크의 성능평가를 위한 열해석 연구)

  • This study examined the numerical analysis results with respect to the thermal behavior of a natural convection cooled pin-fin heat sink. The heat sink consisted of pin fins integrated with plate fins. The heat sinks were designed with two different types to fit the limited internal space. The two types of heat sinks designed were analyzed using the ANSYS software package, and the numerical analysis results were compared with the cooling performance of the two types of heat sinks. The results of the simulation were analyzed according to the temperature distribution and air flow characteristics, heat flux etc. This study examined the correlation of the cooling performance with the heat sink internal structure and fin shape. FEM (Finite Element Method) confirmed the cooling performance of heat sink type A under natural convection conditions as the best results. The results of the numerical simulation showed that the heat sink type A shape showed an approximately 70 percent better heat transfer rate with natural convection than that of type B.
