The heat produced by the fission in the fuel of HANARO, 30 MW research reactor, is transferred from the primary cooling water to the secondary cooling water through heat exchangers, and the heat absorbed by the secondary cooling water is released into the atmosphere by the 33 MW cooling tower which is a mechanical induced draft and counter flow type. If the outlet temperature of cooling tower exceeds 33 of due to the loss of the cooling tower performance under reactor operation above $50\%$ of the full power, the reactor power should be reduced to half of the full power for safe operation. Therefore, the cooling capability of cooling tower should be maintained for the reactor to be normally operated. To predict the capability of cooling tower for full power reactor operation of 30 MW, the performance test of cooling tower was done at the reactor present power of 24 MW and the capability was respectively evaluated by characteristics and performance curves methods in accordance with the Code of Cooling Tower Institute of U.S.A. to confirm the reliability of evaluation. As a result, it was confirmed, through the results of each evaluation, that the cooling capability of cooling tower meets the design required heat load. Also, the equations of the performance and the characteristics curves of the cooling tower, based on the collected data during this performance test, was obtained for developing the calculation program to predict the cooling capability during reactor operation.

The purpose of this study is to assistance the comfortable environment and economical measures of noise transmission mechanism on tile cooling tower. The results show that noise evaluation interact the main factor of distance reduction and diffraction reduction. Noise criterion apply to the NC level and equivalent transmission loss about already the design of noise reduction.
College of Architecture, Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA, US Abstract The intermittent heating and cooling energy need calculation of the ISO 13790 monthly method was examined. The current ISO 13790 method applies a reduction factor to the continuous heating and cooling need calculation result to derive the intermittent heating and cooling for each month. This paper proposes a method for the intermittent energy need calculation based on the internal mean temperature calculation. The internal temperature calculation procedure was introduced considering the heat-balance taking into account of heat gain, heat loss, and thermal inertia for reduced heating and cooling period. Then, the calculated internal mean temperature was used for the intermittent heating and cooling energy need calculation. The calculation results from the proposed method were compared to the current ISO 13790 method and validated with a dynamic simulation using EnergyPlus. The study indicates that the intermittent heating and cooling energy need calculation method using the proposed model improves transparency of the current ISO 13790 method and draws more rational outcomes in the monthly heating and cooling energy need calculation.
Cooling garments are being considered for reducing heat strain in hot environment. We evaluated the effectiveness of ice gel-based cooling vest in hot environment both resting and exercising. Four male subjects were exposed to heat(4$0^{\circ}C$, 50%RH) with vest or without it. The results were as follows; In case of the trial wearing ice gel-based cooling vest, total body weight loss, and local sweat volume were less than those without it. Mean skin temperature, rectal temperature, pulse, energy expenditure, temperature of inside clothes, and humidity of inside also were lower than those without cooling vest. By subjective thermal sensation, subjective humidity sensation, and thermal comfort sensation, it was proved that non-wearing vest decreased comfort than wearing that. These results suggested that wearing ice gel-based cooling vest reduced human heat strain in hot environment both resting and exercising.
This paper describes conceptual development and idea-verification of a sub-miniature portable cooler which dose not necessitate any pre-cooling nor any external energy supply. The basic principle of the cooling mechanism is the vaporization of water and sub-sequent cooling due to the evaporative latent heat loss. In this work, the vaporization of the water is stimulated by desiccant material to improve the cooling effect. The evaporative cooling caused by the desiccant is modeled and analyzed considering the sorption characteristics of the desiccant. In addition, the portable cooler is fabricated in the shape of a thin pad, and its cooling characteristics are tested and compared with the analytic results.
Performance of a VM heat pump is considerably affected by various losses, such as enthalpy dump, reheat loss, pumping loss, conduction loss and shuttle loss. A second-order analysis model of VM heat pumps, which allows consideration of the major losses, was presented. Actual heat transfer rates for heat exchangers were calculated from the heat transfer rates obtained by the adiabatic analysis and various losses. New effective temperatures of heat exchangers were calculated from the actual heat transfer rates and the mean heat transfer coefficients until there was no appreciable change in the effective temperatures. Effects of design parameters, such as phase angle, swept volume ratio, regenerator length and speed on heating capacity, cooling capacity and COP were shown.
The cooling performance of a transcritical $CO_{2}$ cycle varies significantly with a variation of refrigerant charge amount. In this study, the performance of the $CO_{2}$ system was measured and analyzed by varying refrigerant charge amount at a standard test condition. Besides, the losses of the major components in the $CO_{2}$ system were estimated by evaluating entropy generation with refrigerant charge amount. The losses in the expansion device and the gascooler show the major portion of the total loss. For undercharging conditions, the expansion loss dominates the overall system performance, while the gascooler loss increases significantly with an increase of refrigerant charge amount.
Experiments on film cooling were performed with a small scale rocket engine homing liquid oxygen (LOx) and Jet A-1(jet engine fuel). Film coolants(Jet A-1 and water) were injected through the film cooling injector. Film cooled length and the outside wall temperature of the combustor were determined for chamber pressure, and the different geometries(injection angle) with the flow rates of film coolant. The loss of characteristic velocity due to film cooling was determined for the case of film cooling with water and Jet A-1. As the coolant flow increases, the outside wall temperatures decrease but the decrease in the outside wall temperatures reduced over the 8 percent film coolant flow rate. The efficiency of characteristic velocity was decreased with the Increase of the film coolant flow rate.
