  • Purpose: Numerous experimental studies have shown the benefits of treating thermal burns by cooling. Nevertheless, few studies have shown the clinical effect of cooling therapy on thermal burns. This study aimed to identify the clinical effect of immediate cooling therapy. Methods: The research was conducted as a retrospective, case-control study. All patients had thermal injuries characterized as a superficial second-degree burn. In the cooling group, 14 patients had first-aid cooling therapy delivered by either parents, caregivers, general practitioners, local hospitals, and/or Myongji hospital. Included in the study were 22 control patients who were not treated with any cooling therapies. Other clinical factors, such as age, sex, cause of burn injury, and burn area (Total Body Surface Area %), were taken into consideration. The duration of treatment was defined as the time from the occurrence of the injury to the presence of complete re-epithelialization, as confirmed by two surgeons. Results: The duration of treatment in the cooling group was significantly less than that the control group (p<0.05). Conclusion: Cooling therapy as an initial emergent treatment is clinically effective for superficial second-degree burn injuries.

  • This paper was the study of a change in the body temperature of each region(Oral cavity, Axillary, Cubital, Popliteal, Inguinal region)and by time after appling hot(Hot Pack, Infra Red) and cold (Ice Pack, Cooling Pack) to lumbar region. The statistical measures were sampled through 16 senior students in dept. of Physiothrapy, Kim Cheun College and the period for this was from July 13, 1995 to July 20, 1995. There was an increse in the temperature of distal portion besides application area after hot application. The increse in the body temperature according to applied agents and time showed significance statistically(p<0.01, p<0.05). There was just a decrease in the temperature of distal portions besides application area after appling Ice Pack. Furthermore there was an increase in the body temperature after appling Cooling Towel. Therefore, during cold application the appling agents and time did not showed any significance statistically.

  • This study was to investigate the influence of cooling on muscle force and viscoelastic properties of tendon structures in themedial gastrocnemius (MG) muscle. The subject was instructed to gradually increase force (10% MVC step) from a relaxed state to MVC within 3 s. At this time, it was measured by an ultrasonographic probe was attached and that an electrode was attached to monitor EMG. The F values at 50 100% of MVC were significantly greater under the cold condition than under the non-cold condition (p<.05). The ${\Delta}F/{\Delta}L$ values at 80~100% of MVC were significantly higher under the cold condition than under the non-cold condition (p<.05). The elongation under the non-cold condition had a tendency to be greater than that under the cold condition. The results suggest that cooling results in an increase in the stiffness of tendon structures with a reduction of muscle force and elongation.

  • The present case study has a object to investigate the changes in locomotion patterns of infant with athetoid cerebral palsy would be occured by the program when it is applied with upper extremity weight bearing. The subject has been limited to one infant over one year of age, selected from the patients in the physical therapy clinic, Rehabilitation Center, Taegu University. Subject is normal in the visual and auditory sense, but he is unable to walk on his own Subject weighted 2.9kg at birth and underwent severe postnatal kernicterus, always on the baby-walker at homo. He disliked supine position characteristic in moving in athetoid type before he was under the program. The program was applied 7 months. Each session of the program is composed of 7 stages : (1) prebriefing between the therapist and the parents (2) pretherapy amusement time of the infant (3) warming-up (4) upper extremity weight bearing (5) cooling-down (6) post-therapy amusement time (7) postbriefing. The locomotion of the subject is proved to be influenced by the program. He showed a leftward circular movement as a result of the exercise, reducing the involuntary movement of his head when he was positioned for crawling. Later he proceeded to develop into creeping, crawling, kneeling and finally cruising. In conclusion, it appeared evident that the locomotive abilities of the subject is improved by the program explored in this study. The higher locomotive patterns could be achieved such as crawling, sitting, kneeling and cruising wich enable the upper extremities weight bearing.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the efforts of cold applied for reducing spasticity in patients with traumatic brain injury and cerebrovascular accident who did not take neurosurgical treatment and medication except patients with spinal cord injury. The participants consisted of 17 men and 28 female was ramdomly assigned to three groups with each 15. The results were as followings after making on observation about the change of skin temperature and spasticity throughout cryotherapy which was performed with cooling air in Group I (1 min), Group II (5 min) and Group III (10 min). 1. It was found that the Group III, Group II, Group I, in the order named, had the statistically significant reduction of skin temperature, the reduction of spasticity showed statistically significance in Group III, Group II, in order named, but did net show it even though there was a little increase in Group I. 2. The reduction of skin temperature and spasticity did not continue over 24 hours at the same time every day for 5 days. 3. The longer cryotherapy was applied the more skin temperature and spasticity reduced, the more skin temperature was reduced the more spasticity reduced.
