Air-cooled slag showed grindability approximately twice as good as that of water-cooled slag. While the studied water-cooled slag was composed of glass as constituent mineral, the air-cooled slag was mainly composed of melilite. It is assumed that the sulfur in air-cooled slag is mainly in the form of CaS, which is oxidized into $CaS_2O_3$ when in contact with air. $CaS_2O_3$, then, is released mainly as $S_2O{_3}^{2-}$ion when in contact with water. However, the sulfur in water-cooled slag functioned as a constituent of the glass structure, so the$S_2O{_3}^{2-}$ ion was not released even when in contact with water. When no chemical admixture was added, the blended cement of air-cooled slag showed higher fluidity and retention effect than those of the blended cement of the water-cooled slag. It seems that these discrepancies are caused by the initial hydration inhibition effect of cement by the $S_2O{_3}^{2-}$ ion of air-cooled slag. When a superplasticizer is added, the air-cooled slag used more superplasticizer than did the blast furnace slag for the same flow because the air-cooled slag had higher specific surface area due to the presence of micro-pores. Meanwhile, the blended cement of the air-cooled slag showed a greater fluidity retention effect than that of the blended cement of the water-cooled slag. This may be a combined effect of the increased use of superplasticizer and the presence of released $S_2O{_3}^{2-}$ ion; however, further, more detailed studies will need to be conducted.

The sub-cooled nitrogen cooling system at 65 K with GM cryo-cooler is developed for cooling down the DC reactor of 6.6 ㎸-200 A class HTS Fault Current Limiter(SFCL). The sub-cooled nitrogen cooling is more economic than saturated nitrogen cooling, because the length of HTS wire is reduced in the same capacity, as well as, more stable. The cooling system with the GM cryo-cooler installed on the cryostat is not only compact but also efficient for energy saving. In the nitrogen vessel, after evacuating with vacuum pump to saturated nitrogen at 65 K, sub-cooled nitrogen at 65 K is made by putting in gas helium to 1 atm. During the short circuit test occurring the fault current of 1000 A, the sub-cooled nitrogen cooled DC reactor for SFCL is kept the state of sub-cooled nitrogen at 65 K.

This paper presents the drop performance test of the control rod assembly which is one of the main components strongly related to the safety of the prototype generation IV sodium-cooled fast reactor. To investigate the drop performance, a real-sized control rod assembly that was recently modified based on the drop analysis results was newly fabricated, and several free drop tests under different flow rate conditions were carried out. Then the results were compared with those obtained from the previous tests conducted on the conceptually designed control rod assembly to demonstrate the improvement in performance. Moreover, the drop performance tests under several types and magnitudes of seismic loadings were also conducted to investigate the effect of the seismic loading on the drop performance of the modified control rod assembly. The results showed that the effects of the type and magnitude of the seismic loading on the drop performance of the modified control rod assembly were not significant. Also, the drop time requirement was successfully satisfied, even under the seismic loading conditions.

It is necessary to develop a new metal cutting technology which does not use cutting fluid, since cutting fluid can have undesirable effect on workers's health and working environment. For this to be possible, it is necessary to replace the conventional method of using cutting fluid, whose basic functions are removing chip and heat, and providing lubrication between tool and chip. In this work, cooled air is utilized in order to replace cutting fluid. Experiments were carried out while cutting workpiece with HSS flat endmill under a variety of supply conditions for cooled air. Also the performance characteristics of the air cooling system. which was built for the experiments, were carefully analyzed. For the reliable operation of air cooling system. moisture contained in the cooled air had to be removed before being supplied to the workpiece and tools. It was found that depending on the amount of its flow rate the temperature of cooled air changes at the time of injection from the nozzle. The flow rate of cooled air also plays an important role in removing the accumulated chip on the workpiece. After comparing the flank wear for the three cases of using cooled air, cutting fluid, and pure dry technique, it was demonstrated that the level of flank wear was similar for the cases of cooled air and cutting fluid. The pure dry technique, however, showed higher level of flank wear than cooled air.
In this study, variations in the microstructure and hardness of a low-carbon SCM415 steel with austenitizing temperature and cooling rate are investigated. When the austenitizing temperature is lower than the A1 temperature (738.8 ℃) of the SCM415 steel, the microstructures of both the air-cooled and water-cooled specimens consist of ferrite and pearlite, which are similar to the microstructure of the initial specimen. When heat treatment is conducted at temperatures ranging from the A1 temperature to the A3 temperature (822.4 ℃), the microstructure of the specimen changes depending on the temperature and cooling rate. The specimens air- and water-cooled from 750 ℃ consist of ferrite and pearlite, whereas the specimen water-cooled from 800 ℃ consists of ferrite and martensite. At a temperature higher than the A3 temperature, the air-cooled specimens consist of ferrite and pearlite, whereas the water-cooled specimens consist of martensite. At 650 ℃ and 700 ℃, which are lower than the A1 temperature, the hardness decreases irrespective of the cooling rate due to the ferrite coarsening and pearlite spheroidization. At 750 ℃ or higher, the air-cooled specimens have smaller grain sizes than the initial specimen, but they have lower hardness than the initial specimen owing to the increased interlamellar spacing of pearlite. At 800 ℃ or higher, martensitic transformation occurs during water cooling, which results in a significant increase in hardness. The specimens water-cooled from 850 ℃ and 950 ℃ have a complete martensite structure, and the specimen water-cooled from 850 ℃ has a higher hardness than that water-cooled from 950 ℃ because of the smaller size of prior austenite grains.

To study on the superconducting properties with cooling conditions, silver-sheathed Bi-Pb-Sr-Ca-Cu-O wires fabricated by the powder-in-tube method. The wires cooled down in the furnace, air and liquid NS12T after sintering at 840$^{\circ}C$ Critical current density of sample cooled in the furnace is 5.1${\times}$10S03TA/cmS02T and sample cooled in the air is 40A/cmS02T at 77K, zero magnetic field. The latter is very low critical current density of Bi system. 2223 high-Tc superconducting phase of sample cooled in the air was distroyed. Properties of sample cooled down in the liquid nitrogen is the same as cooled in the furnace.

Sub-cooled hybrid condenser(SCHC) which have been developed through this study is an appliance of integrating a condenser with a receiver dryer, which were previously separated. It is supposed that the development of sub-cooled hybrid condenser will be able to reduce not only weight, size, production process and cost, but also quite improve in capability, which will be of great use for the technological development and research of an air conditioning system whose importance is higher in a car. Through the present study it was found that the developed SCHC increases in the degree of sub-cooling by 10∼100% compared to conventional condenser. The excessive sub-cool has improved the cooling performance by 10%, and that leads to the reduction in evaporator outlet air temperature $1.5^{\circ}C$. Additionally, it is expected that sub-cooled hybrid condenser weights less by 100g than the previous condensers which has equal super heat.

The cryogenic system for inductive superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) has been investigated recently. In this investigation, the sub-cooled nitrogen cryogenic system was adopted to enhance the performance of DC reactor for 6.6㎸/200A inductive SFCL. In sub-cooled nitrogen state at 64K, the critical current value and the thermal conductivity are larger than those of saturated nitrogen state at 77K and the electrical insulation capacitance should be remarkably enhanced. The solenoid type of 84mH superconducting DC reactor was fabricated and cooled down to 64K by using sub-cooled cooling method with GM-cryocooler and rotary pump. The fabrication techniques of cryogenic system and some experimental results such as cooling down characteristic are introduced in this study. Moreover, the sub-cooled nitrogen cryogenic system was detailedly introduced in this paper.

Insulation breakdown of water-cooled generator stator windings occurs frequently due to leakage of cooling water and absorption into the insulation material. Leakage and absorption problems of water-cooled stator windings are often found during regular preventive maintenance. To evaluate cooling water leakage and absorption, diagnostic tests were performed on two water-cooled turbine generators, which have been in service for 13 and 17 years, respectively. The test results of the measured electrical properties such as dissipation factor($tan{\delta}$), capacitance and AC leakage current for water-cooled generator stator windings with wet bars are reported in this paper.
