In this paper the comparison of the first order approximation schemes such as SLP(sequential linear programming) CONLIN(convex linearization) MMA(method of moving asymptotes) and the second order approximation scheme SQP(sequential quadratic programming) was accomplished for optimization of nonlinear structures. It was found that MMA and SQP are the most efficient methods for optimization. But the number of function call of SQP is much more than that of MMA. Therefore when it is considered with the expense of computation MMA is more efficient than SQP. In order to examine the efficiency of MMA for complex optimization problem it was applied to the helicopter tail boom con-sidering column buckling and local wall buckling constraints. it is concluded that MMA can be a very efficient approxima-tion scheme from simple problems to complex problems.

In the present study, a new method of generating boundary-fitted coordinates systems controlled by control function is introduced. Application of the method to a three-dimensional simply-connected region is the demonstrated. The numerical grid generation has following feat ures, (a) The generated boundary fitted coordinates is well concentrated in near wall region and satisfied orthogonality, (b) The grid control function is fully automatic and well controlled in sharp convex boundary.

In this study, flow around rudder is analyzed by utilizing the numerical calculation, and the rudder open water test is performed to validate the calculation. The aim of this study is to design the new rudder shape to improve manoeuvring performance. In first, flow around two-dimensional rudder section is analyzed to understand the characteristics of section profile. And the calculation for all-movable rudders is performed and compared with results of rudder open water test. It is hard to numerically predict the drag force because the value is sensitive to the turbulence modeling and grid spacing near the wall. However, the lift force is predicted well. And we can prove that concave profile of the rudder section produce more lift and torque than convex one as a experiment. However PANEL method that ignore viscous effect cannot distinguish the difference of them. So, we can look for the numerical tool to be developed the new rudder shape.

An experimental investigation was performed to study the characteristics of turbulent swirling flow in the cylindrical annuli. The swirl angle measurements were performed by flow visualization technique using smoke and dye liquid. By using the particle image velocimetry method. this study has found the time-mean velocity distribution and turbulent intensity with swirl for Re=20,000. 30.000. 50.000. and 70,000 along longitudinal sections. The results appear to be physically reasonable. Other experimental study was performed to investigate heat transfer characteristics of turbulent swirling air flow in axisymmetric annuli. The static pressure. the local air flow temperature, and the wall temperature with decaying swirl were measured by using thermocouples and the friction factor and the local Nusselt number were calculated for Re=30,000. 50,000 and 70000. The local Nusselt number was compared with that obtained from the Dittus-Boelter equation with swirl and without swirl, respectively. The results showed that the swirl enhances the heat transfer at the inlet and the outlet of the test tube.
Two- and three-dimensional turbulent airflows in a 9-degrees-bent channel are studied numerically. The inner surfaces of upper and lower walls are parallel to each other upstream and downstream of the bend section. The free stream is supersonic, whereas the flow at the channel exit is either supersonic or subsonic depending on the given backpressure. Solutions of the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations are obtained with a finite-volume solver ANSYS CFX. The solutions reveal instability of formed shock waves and a flow hysteresis in considerable bands of the free-stream Mach number at zero and negative angles of attack. The instability is caused by an interaction of shocks with the expansion flow formed over the convex bend of lower wall.
Sector scanner which has a conical end is used to image through the intercostal space because heart is protected by the ribs. Cardiac data published all around the world were also obtained by sector scanner. Although scanners being used in every small animal practice and animal hospital at college in Korea include convex ape and linear type, linear type is not appropriate f3r cardiac scan because of a wide contact surface. The purpose of this study is to establish ultrasonographic images of normal cardiac structures by measuring shape, size of reflectable cardiac structure according to restraint position in scanning normal heart of the puppies with 6.5 MHz convex scanner(SonoAce 4500, Medison, Korea) used in our veterinary teaching hospital, Seoul national university. Seventeen male and female puppies considered having healthy hear by X-ray and clinical examination are used feom April to July 1994. Scanning point selection of probe head and the distinction of imaged cardiac structures were accomplished by necropsy and cardiac scanning performed through thoracotomy under general anesthesia. At 10 o'clock position of transducer(at an angle of 30$^{\circ}$ between imaginary line from elbow joint to 3rd sternum and probe head, 60$^{\circ}$ from body surface, 4th intercostal space of right thorax) with the marker of scanner toward the head of dogs right atrium, left atrium and left ventricle were observed in 2, 3, 4, 5 intercostal space(2cm from the sternum) of experimental dog positioned ventrodorsally under general anesthesia. Under these conditions, the numerical values of imaged diastolic hear are as follows : the distance from skin to apex(mean$\pm$S.D) 47.53$\pm$6.94mm, thickness of left ventricular wall 6.00$\pm$1.60mm, length of left ventricle 16.27$\pm$5.31mm, width of left ventricle 15,33$\pm$4.25mm, length of left atrium 12.33$\pm$3.82mm, width of left atrium 11. 33$\pm$3.94mm, length of right atrium 1.00$\pm$2.41mm, width of right atrium 11.21$\pm$2.76mm and the area of left ventricle 270.92$\pm$109.81mm$^2$, area of left atrium 98.00$\pm$41.08mm$^2$, area of right atrium 62.75$\pm$21.04mm$^2$.

The objective of this work was to investigate the pintle-tip shape effect on nozzle flow and thrust by cold flow test. When nozzle throat area was decreased by pintle movement, chamber pressure was increased monotonously but thrust was increased differently according to every pintle-tip shape. At the same chamber pressure and nozzle throat area, thrust of convex pintle-tip shape was mostly larger than that of concave one. Nozzle wall pressure distribution and magnitude of pintle-tip load depended on the pintle-tip shape, pintle position and nozzle throat area.

An experimental study on the flow over the axisymmetric backward-facing step was carried out. The purposes of the present study are to investigate the effect of the free stream turbulence intensity on the reattachment length and to understand the turbulence structure of the recirculating flows. Local mean and fluctuating velocity components were measured in the separated and reattaching axisymmetric turbulent boundary layer over the wall of convex cylinder placed in a water tunnel by using 2-color 4-beam fiber optics laser Doppler velocimetry. As the free stream turbulence intensity increased, the reattachment length became shorter due to the enhanced mixing in the separated shear layer. It was also observed that the reverse flow velocity and turbulent kinetic energy increase with increasing free stream turbulence intensity. Spectral data and flow visualization showed that low-frequency motions occur in the separated flow behind a backward-facing step. These motions have a significant effect on the time-averaged turbulence data.

The turbulent shear flow around a surface-mounted vertical fence was investigated using the two-frame PTV system. The Reynolds number based on the fence height(H) was 2950. From this study, it is revealed that at least 400 instantaneous velocity field data are required for ensemble average to get reliable turbulence statistics, but only 100 field data are sufficient for the time-averaged mean velocity information. Various turbulence statistics such as turbulent intensities, turbulence kinetic energy and Reynolds shear stress were calculated from 700 instantaneous velocity vector fields. The fence flow has an unsteady recirculation region behind the fence, followed by a slow relaxation to the flat-plate boundary layer flow. The time-averaged reattachment length estimated from the streamline distribution is about 11.2H. There exists a region of negative Reynolds shear stress near the fence top due to the highly convex (stabilizing) streamline-curvature of the upstream flow. The large eddy structure in the separated shear layer seems to have significant influence on the development of the separated shear layer and the reattachment process.
