Improvement of Variable Renewable Energy Penetration of Stand-Alone Microgrid Hosting Capacity by Using Energy-Storage-System Based on Power Sensitivity

  • Recently, the demand for high penetration of variable renewable energy (VRE) penetration in a power system is increased. In consequence, distribution systems including microgrids confront the increased installation of VRE-based distributed generation. Despite of the high demand of VRE-based distributed generation in a distribution system, the installation of photovoltaic (PV) system in a distribution system has been restricted by various problems. In other words, the hosting capacity for high VRE penetration in a distribution system is limited. This paper analyzes the improvements of hosting capacity VRE penetration of stand-alone microgrid (SAMG) with energy storage system (ESS) by considering virtual-slack (VS) control based on power sensitivity. With the pre-defined power sensitivity, the ESS operates as virtual slack in the SAMG by controlling its bus voltage and phase angle indirectly. Therefore, the ESS enables the increase of VRE penetration in the SAMG. The proposed VS control is realized by analyzing the ESS as a virtual slack in power flow analysis based on power sensitivity. Then its validity is demonstrated with the case study on the SAMG in South Korea with practical data.

Design of variable 4-bar linkage structure for adjustable driving angle (구동 각도 조절이 가능한 가변형 4절링크 설계)

  • Since 4-bar linkage widely used in various industrial fields has a fixed link length, it is inconvenient to add an independent link structure or control device to change the movement of output link. Therefore, this paper proposes a new concept of variable 4-bar linkage mechanism to selectively adjust the movement of the output link to fit desired situations, and applied to the commercial table fans, which is a representative product using a 4-bar linkage system. The optimal rotation angle steps for efficiency are determined experimentally and the appropriate lengths of linkage to fit each step are calculated analytically. Changes in the linkage length are implemented by the rotational motion using a grooved cylindrical cam and the feasibility of the proposed variable linkage mechanism is verified through fabrication and measurement. The presented variable link mechanism is expected to improve the efficiency of industrial robots and fuel valve systems.

  • In this paper, we analize the effect of a steering water used in a unified phase I-phase II semi-infinite constrained optimization algorithm and present a new algorithm based on the facts that when the point x is far away from the feasible region where all the constraints are satisfied, reaching to the feasible region is more important than minimizing the cost function and that when the point x is near the region, it is more efficient to try to reach the feasible region and to minimize the cost function concurrently. Also, the angle between the search direction vector and the gradient of the cost function is considered when the steering parameter value is computed. Even though changing the steering parameter does not change the rate of convergence of the algorithm, we show through some examples that the proposed algorithm performs better than the other algorithms.

PVP-assisted Synthesis of TiO2 Nanospheres and their Application to the Preparation of Superhydrophobic Surfaces

  • Enhancement of the surface hydrophobicity of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) thin films deposited on substrates covered with titanium dioxide ($TiO_2$) nanospheres was studied. First, a low-temperature solution-phase method using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as a surface capping agent and a water/dimethylformamide (DMF) mixture as the reaction medium was used to synthesize monodisperse $TiO_2$ nanospheres. It was possible to easily control hydrolysis rate of the Ti-precursors and the size of the synthesized nanospheres by varying the amount of PVP and the volume ratio of the solvent mixture. Spray coating of the synthesized $TiO_2$ nanospheres under the PDMS film increased the water contact angle of the film surface to $150.3^{\circ}$. This simple treatment can modify the surface morphology at a nanometer scale without any long or complicated nanoprocess; hence, the surface enters the superhydrophobic Cassie-Baxter regime.

  • In this paper we propose a new adaptive stereo object tracking system that can extract the object from the complex background and foreground noises by using the image-based SAD algorithm and control the convergence angle and pan/tilt of cameras by using optical BPEJTC. From the experimental results the proposed stereo tracking system is found to track the object adpatively under the circumstance of complex and changing background noises and the possibility of real-time implementation of the proposed system by using the optical system is also suggested.

  • In this study, a variable displacement swash plate pump supplying high-pressure hydraulic oil to control the hydraulic system of a marine engine was developed. A structural analysis was performed on the main parts of the pump to ensure the structural safety in the design. Using a pump testing equipment, performance characteristics such as no-load flow rate, load flow rate, flow rate according to the swivel angle change, flow rate with lubrication orifice, and response time according to the swivel motion were tested. Consequently, the pump was confirmed to satisfy the required specifications.

  • In order to obtain the overall fire line information of medium and large forest fires at night, the ground control system was developed to determine whether forest fires occurred through real-time video clips and to calculate the location of the forest fires determined using the location of drones, angle information of video cameras, and altitude information on the map to reduce the time required for regular video matches obtained after the completion of the mission. To verify the reliability of the developed function, the error distance of the aiming position information of the flight altitude star and the image camera was measured, and the location information within the reliable range was displayed on the map. As the function developed in this paper allows real-time identification of multiple locations of forest fires, it is expected that overall fire line information for the establishment of forest fire extinguishing measures will be obtained more quickly.

Development of a Time-Domain Simulation Tool for Offshore Wind Farms

  • A time-domain simulation tool to predict the dynamic power output of wind turbines in an offshore wind farm was developed in this study. A wind turbine model consisting of first or second order transfer functions of various wind turbine elements was combined with the Ainslie's eddy viscosity wake model to construct the simulation tool. The wind turbine model also includes an aerodynamic model that is a look up table of power and thrust coefficients with respect to the tip speed ratio and pitch angle of the wind turbine obtained by a commercial multi-body dynamics simulation tool. The wake model includes algorithms of superposition of multiple wakes and propagation based on Taylor's frozen turbulence assumption. Torque and pitch control algorithms were implemented in the simulation tool to perform max-Cp and power regulation control of the wind turbines. The simulation tool calculates wind speeds in the two-dimensional domain of the wind farm at the hub height of the wind turbines and yields power outputs from individual wind turbines. The NREL 5MW reference wind turbine was targeted as a wind turbine to obtain parameters for the simulation. To validate the simulation tool, a Danish offshore wind farm with 80 wind turbines was modelled and used to predict the power from the wind farm. A comparison of the prediction with the measured values available in literature showed that the results from the simulation program were fairly close to the measured results in literature except when the wind turbines are congruent with the wind direction.

Gain Parameter Determination for the Feeding Speed and Skew Controller of Media Transport System using Optimization Technique (최적화 기법을 적용한 매체 이송 시스템의 이송속도 및 비틀어짐 제어기의 이득값 결정)

  • In this paper, we made a simple paper feeding system which is one of MTS (media transport system) and controllers. The plant has a flexible paper and two driving rollers and two driven rollers. The control system has two conventional PID controllers. Skew angle and feeding speed of MTS deteriorate the quality of feeding system. In order to control a feeding speed and skew of feeding paper, we control rotational velocity of two driving rollers. Therefore, this controller has two inputs and two outputs as MIMO (multi-input and multi-output) system. The control inputs were the feeding speed and the skew displacement of the paper. The control outputs were the rotational velocity to each driving roller. To find appropriate PID gains of two controllers, we proposed an optimization technique. We assume the system variables and performance of a whole system as follows. PID gains of two controllers for skew and feeding speed are system variables. System performance is both skew and feeding speed. We simulates to making mathematical correlation using global Kriging interpolation. To find appropriate value of system variables, optimization method is simulation in sequence as following method. First, the optimization solver simulates with DOE (design of experiment) tables to find correlation equation of both system variable and performances. Then, the solver guesses the appropriate values and simulates if the system variables are appropriate or not. If the result of validation doesn't satisfy the convergence and iteration tolerance, the solver makes a new Kriging models and iterates this sequence until satisfy the tolerances.

Development of Control Method for Improving Energy Efficiency of Unmanned Underwater Gliders (무인 수중글라이더의 에너지 효율 개선을 위한 제어방법 개발)

  • In this paper, unmanned underwater glider was designed for high-depth operation and adopted a bladder-type buoyancy controller for improving battery efficiency, and the motion controller controls the pitch angle by moving the internal mass battery. To improve the energy efficiency of the unmanned underwater glider, a layered PID controller that performs control by section was designed. Simulation program including 6-DOF motion equations and hydrodynamics coefficients of an unmanned underwater glider is constructed using Matlab/Simulink program. Control methods such as PID controller, sliding mode controller and layered PID controller were applied to the simulator to compare the dynamics performance and energy efficiency. As a result, the layered PID controller showed improved control performance compared to other controllers and improved energy efficiency of approximately 7.2% compared to PID controller.
