Even though a number of historic structures in Korea need to be repaired, an intensive research on their engineering performance has rarely been investigated. Herein, we attempted to provide a methodological approach via the explicit finite element analysis to investigate geotechnical aspect of the performance of the dry-stone wall structures. To do so, we summarized relevant literature on the world-wide historic stone structures as well as its analysis in terms of modern geotechnical engineering. The method of the explicit finite element analysis has been briefly summarized. The numerical results on an idealized block structure show that the displacement of blocks and the distribution of earth pressure is different from the conventional theory of the retaining wall because of the discrete nature of the dry-stone wall structure.

This study aims to develop a computerized program for analysis of the ground-supported cylindrical shell structure with step varied section and to find out its mechanical characteri- stics through application of the developed program to the analysis of a ensiled farm silo as a model structure. The thickness of wall and bottom-plate of farm silo is assumed to be step-varied and its detailed structural dimensions are presented in Tab. 1 and 2. Several numerical case studies show that sectional stresses of the sample structures are largely reduced by adopting "varied section" design technique. And, other major results ob- tained from this study are summarize4 as follows ; 1. The variation of wall-thickness has a great influence on bending stresses of wall. Ho- wever, the larger the relative thickness of bottom-plate is, the smaller the influence is. 2. The magnitude of thickness of projecting toe of bottom-plate has negligible effect on sectional stresses 3. The conventional design methodology, which assumes the bottom edge of wall as clam- ped on ground, is proved to be discarded through the numerical analysis. 4. It is found that the "varied section" design technique should get similar effects as in the case of thick bott6m-plate having uniform thickness. 5. The variation of wall-thickness has a considerable effect on the bending stresses of bo- ttom-plate. Especially, this phenomenon is very remarkable in its projecting toe. In some cases. the negative bending moment may be acted on.
It had been disputed how to apply wall drag to the dispersed phase in the framework of the conventional two-fluid model for two-phase flows. Recently, Kim et al. [1] introduced the volume-averaged momentum equation based on the equation of a solid/fluid particle motion. They showed theoretically that for dispersed two-phase flows, the overall two-phase pressure drop by wall friction must be apportioned to each phase, in proportion to each phase fraction. In this study, the validity of the proposed wall drag model is demonstrated though one-dimensional (1D) simulations. In addition, it is shown that the existing form loss model incorrectly predicts the motion of the dispersed phase. A new form loss model is proposed to overcome that problem. The newly proposed form loss model is tested in the region covering the lower plenum and the core in a nuclear power plant. As a result, it is shown that the new models can correctly predict the relative velocity of the dispersed phase to the surrounding fluid velocity in the core with spacer grids.

In this paper, we improved the light extraction efficiency by structural change of LEDs on conventional LEDs. We simulated the LEDs light emission as functions of LED side wall angle, various refractive indices the geometrical structures and analyzed the condition improved the light efficiency. We present the results of experimerns and simulations for light output power from LEDs for various refractive indices and the geometrical structures of the LED encapsulants. When the side wall angle range was from 40[$^{\circ}$] to 30[$^{\circ}$], the LED emission increased. LED side wall angle onto LED using the simulation system with a fine tuning of the structure of the LEDs side wall angle is fabricated. Additionally, we changed the side wall angle of LED package with spherical structure and flat structure. The result of spherical structure ray tracting is higher compared with flat structure about 14[%].

A new second-moment closure model for turbulent heat fluxes is proposed on the basis of the elliptic equation. The new model satisfies the near-wall balance between viscous diffusion, viscous dissipation and temperature-pressure gradient correlation, and also has the characteristics of approaching its respective conventional high Reynolds number model far away from the wall. The predictions of turbulent heat transfer in a channel flow have been carried out with constant wall heat flux and constant wall temperature difference boundary conditions respectively. The velocity field variables are supplied from the DNS data and the differential equations only fur the mean temperature and the scalar flux are solved by the present calculations. The present model is tested by direct comparisons with the DNS to validate the performance of the model predictions. The prediction results show that the behavior of the turbulent heat fluxes in the whole region is well captured by the present model.
In a port fuel injection system of engine, a large part of fuel injected into an intake port adheres on its wall and inlet valve. Consequently, the wall impinging spray interaction might occur the generation of several harmful phenomena. There are uncontrollable mixture formation, an accidental backfire and unburned hydrocarbons. Therefore, it is important to analyze the fuel behavior during the spray-wall interaction. In this study, splash characteristics of impingement and reflecting or scattering behavior of droplets of fuel injected from EFI nozzle were studied experimentally. A test fuel used is LAWS and its physical characteristics are similar to the conventional gasoline except for the ignition point. Since the liquid film formed immediately after impinging on an impingement plate is unstable, it is easy to cause secondary disintegration. In addition, when the intermittently impingement on the impingement plate with LAWS, the splash ratio is around 0.6. If an injection period becomes longer, liquid film will become thick and the splash ratio will fall bout 10 percent. On the other hand, when the injection period of an intermittent spray is long, the same time lapse as a continuous spray is shown.
In this paper, a new experimental method to determine the thermal resistance of building wall was proposed by improving the heat flow method (HFM) based on the air-surface temperature ratio theory. This technique measures the thermal resistance of the wall excluding the inner and outer surface heat transfer resistance. Unlike conventional HFM, this value can be compared directly with the theoretical reference value. Its performance was verified using three mock-up structures with a theoretical thermal transmittance of 0.5, 3.3, and 0.18 W/㎡·K respectively. After measuring the variations in the temperature and heat transfer rate of the mock-ups for 383 hours, the thermal transmittances were determined to be 0.47, 3.10, and 0.18 W/㎡·K, which corresponded to errors of 5.2, 6.2 and 0.5%, respectively, compared to the theoretical values. It was concluded that this technique can directly compare the thermal resistance of the wall between the existent stage and initial stage after construction.

The structural stability and the elastic modulus of hexagonal ZnO nanowires and nanotubes are investigated using atomistic simulations based on the shell model. The ZnO nanowire with (10-10) facets is energetically more stable than that with (11-20). Our calculations indicate that the structural change of ZnO nanowires with (10-10) facets is sensitive to the diameter. With decreasing the diameter of ZnO nanowires, the unit-cell length is increased while the bond-length is reduced due to the change of surface atoms. Unlike the conventional layered nanotubes, the energetic stability of single crystalline ZnO nanotubes is related to the wall thickness. The potential energy of ZnO nanotubes with fixed outer and inner diameters decreases with increasing wall thickness while the nanotubes with same wall thickness are independent of the outer and inner diameters. The transformation of single crystalline ZnO nanotubes with double layer from wurtzite phase to graphitic suggests the possibility of wall-typed ZnO nanotubes. The size-dependent Young's modulus for ZnO nanowires and nanotubes is also calculated. The diameter and the wall thickness play a significant role in the Young's modulus of single crystalline ZnO nanowires and nanotubes, respectively.
Geosynthetic reinforced soil walls are well recognized alternatives to conventional retaining walls due to many advantages in terms of ease of construction, economy, and aesthetics, among others. In recent years, the use of back-to-back (BTB) geosynthetic reinforced soil walls has been increasing for roadway and railway construction. However, there are insufficient studies concerning the behavior of BTB type geosynthetic reinforced soil walls. In this study a series of finite element analysis were performed for BTB walls with various wall geometry and reinforcement distribution. The results were then analyzed to relate the wall geometry and reinforcement distribution and the performance of BTB walls. Optimum reinforcement pattern was also investigated.

Uses of geosynthetics as a reinforcing material for earth structures have ever increased due to their excellent economy. fine external appearance. and easy construction. In the current practice of geosynthetics. however, the lacks of the standardized method of evaluating the soil/geosynthetics friction properties and the inconsistency of conventional design methods develop confusion to the civil engineers. The purpose of site monitoring of the retaining wall reinforced by geogrids was to evaluate the applicability of existing design methods to, and performance of. CHAMSTONE wall system. Full scale field performance during and after construction was monitored by incorporating instrumentation including strain gauges on the geogrid and soil pressure cells. The difference of the reinforcing effects of geosynthetics embedded in the soil will be also investigated by comparing of the line and curve types of retaining wall reinforced by geogrids with block type facings.
