This experiment was conducted to determine a potential effective biological weed control and/or rice young seedling injury by golden apple snail (Pomacea canaliculata) at wet hill seeded rice field. The rice seeds used were treated by iron-coating. The efficacy of weed control as affected by golden apple snail has been tested with twice applications of young golden apple snails of 12 kg (24,000 young snails, $0.5g{\pm}10%$ per young snail, 30~40 days after hatching) per ha at the same day after harrowing and applied with rate of 10 kg (20,000 young snails) per ha at 15days after seeding, respectively. The comparison of this experiment was of the conventional machine transplanted rice paddy field in terms of weed control and rice plant injury as a visual grade. The weed efficacy was of 100% similar with the conventional paddy field which was applied by systematic herbicides of pre-emergence and post-emergence chemical herbicides and there was 1~3% significant rice young seedling injury but no yield losses and grain quality due to the input of golden apple snail.

Paddy fields are important habitats for maintaining the biodiversity of agricultural ecosystems. Recently, as the need for safe food and biodiversity conservation has increased, the rice cultivation methods have undergone changes. This study was conducted to investigate the fish fauna in Environmentally Friendly Paddy fields (EFP) and Conventional Paddy fields (CP), and compare the characteristics of Misgurnus anguillicaudatus and Aphyocypris chinensis populations in EFP and CP. A total of 2,703 fish were collected and classified into six families and 13 species. Our results showed that there was a difference in the proportion of fish populations in the two paddy fields, and the number of individuals in EFP was higher than in CP. The weight values of M. anguillicaudatus were higher in EFP than in CP, and the total length, body length, and weight values of A. chinensis were higher in EFP than in CP. Conditional factor(K) values also showed similar trends in EFP and CP. Our results indicate that the farming practices in paddy fields have a significant effect on the characteristics of M. anguillicaudatus and A. chinensis populations, and the results of this study can be used as basic data for securing biodiversity in future agricultural ecosystems.

Most operation related to the application granular agrochemicals in korea are manual and labour consuming. As a multipurpose granular applicator, a pneumatic granular applicator that can be attached to conventional ride -on machines for paddy field was designed in this study. Experiments and simulations were carried out for determine in the design factors with one fertilizer (DongBu 21-17-17) and one pesticide (SamKong Ivi). The maximum terminal velocity of granular chemicals was estimated as 14.2m/s. A better distribution pattern was obtained at the diffuser having only deflectors without dividing guides. The diffuser spacing 1.0m for the fertilizer and the diffuser spacing 0.8m for the pesticide at the boom height over 0.80m were acceptable for the uniform distribution. In the case that the forward speed of ride-on machines was 0.7m/s, the groove opening and the roller speed of the selected metering device were13mm -15mm at 2 rps for the fertilizer, and 9 mm-11mm at 0.25rps or the pesticide. This study suggested a method of developing a pneumatic applicator for granular agrochemicals.

The two agricultural zones, mid-and-northen region and southern region, were established according to the possibility of double cropping in the paddy field. For each agricultural zone typically mechanized farming systems with a power tiller for cultivating rice, barley and soybean were established. A computer program, which determines the optimum size of power tiller for the given farm size, the ratio of paddy area to total area and the ratio of double cropping area to the paddy area, was developed. The computer program was executed for the farm sizes, 1 to 3 ha, and the ratios of paddy area to the total area, 60~80%, and the ratio of double cropping area to the total paddy area, 70%. The following conclusions were drawn from analyzing the computer outputs. 1. In the mid-and-northern region, a smaller power tiller (5 or 6 PS) appeared to be more economical for the farm size up to 3 ha. From the viewpoint of fuel consumption a 6 PS power tiller appeared to be more favorable. 2. In the southern region, a smaller tiller (5 or 6 PS) appeared to be more economical for the farm size up to 1.5 ha. But, a larger power tiller (8 or 10 PS) appeared to become more economical as the farm size and the barley planted area increased. 3. For the southern region where rotary tilling is heavily required due to double cropping, it is recommended to develop a power tiller which weighs light like the conventional 5 or 6 PS small power tiller but has lager power.
Field experimental study was performed to evaluate water and nutrient balances in paddy rice culture. The water balance showed that outflow generally balanced the inflow showing that about half (47${\sim}$54%) of total outflow was lost by surface drainage. No significant effect of fertilization rate was observed from three treatments (150%, 100%, and 70% of standard fertilization) on both rice yield and nutrient outflow from surface drainage. Therefore, reducing nonpoint source nutrient loading by reducing fertilization may not work well in the range of normal paddy rice farming practice, and instead it could be achieved by reducing surface drainage outflow. Water-saving irrigation by reducing pending depth, raising ridge height in rice field, and minimizing forced surface drainage are suggested to reduce surface drainage outflow. These practices can save water and protect water quality, however, deviation from conventional standard practices might affect the rice yield and further investigations are necessary. It was demonstrated that rainfall affects nutrient net outflow and paddy rice culture might be beneficial to wafer quality protection under normal rainfall condition.

This study was conducted to determine the effects of two plant populations (28 and 14 plants per $m^2$) and two toppings in conventional plant population (28 plants per $m^2$) on soybean (Glycine max L. cv. Pungsannamulkong) cultivated in the paddy field. The two topping time were taken at 6$^{th}$ to 7$^{th}$ and 8$^{th}$ to 9$^{th}$ trifoliolate leaf stages in the conventional plant population. Experimental design for growth data was a randomized complete block with three replications, and samples were taken at R1 (July 31), R3 (August 19), R5 (September 2) and R7 (September 23) growth stages. The branch number of soybean was relatively higher in the low plant population (14 plants per $m^2$) and with the topping at the 6$^{th}$ to 7$^{th}$ leaf stage, in the conventional plant population (28 plants per $m^2$), and with topping at the 8$^{th}$ to 9$^{th}$ trifoliolate leaf stage in descending order. The highest average branch length of soybean was observed in the low population and the longest branch length was observed from the soybean with topping at the 6$^{th}$ to 7$^{th}$ leaf stage. The leaf number per plant was decreased in order of in the low population, with the topping at 6$^{th}$ to 7$^{th}$ trifoliolate leaf stage, with the topping at 8$^{th}$ to 9$^{th}$ trifoliolate leaf stage, and in the conventional population. The leaf area was high in the low population and with topping at 6$^{th}$ to 7$^{th}$ trifoliolate leaf stage and was relatively low in the conventional population and with the topping at 8$^{th}$ to 9$^{th}$ trifoliolate leaf stage in soybean. The dry weight of leaves and branches was high in the low population and with the topping at 6$^{th}$ to 7$^{th}$ trifoliolate leaf stage and was relatively low in the conventional population and with topping at 8$^{th}$ to 9$^{th}$ trifoliolate leaf stage. The leaf number per plant was high in the low population and with topping at 6$^{th}$ to 7$^{th}$ trifoliolate leaf stage and was relatively low in the conventional population and with topping at 8$^{th}$ to 9$^{th}$ trifoliolate leaf stage. The grain yield per 10a was high with the topping at 6$^{th}$ to 7$^{th}$ trifoliolate leaf stage.
The installation of subsurface drainage equipment is required for generalized use of paddy field and to improve soil productivity. The internal drainage of paddy field has improved root condition from the increasing of oxygen supply and removing noxious elements. This experiment was carried out to determine the effects of fertilization and drainage system on soil characteristic, growth and lodging trait of rice in paddy soil. A subsurface drainage system was installed a depth of 0.8m. Three fertilizer treatments were applied : 1) Conventional fertilized plot, 2) Controlled-release fertilized plot, 3) No-fertilized plot. In conventional plot, 110 kg N (as urea 46%), 45 kg P (as fused phosphate 20%) and 57 kg K (as potassium chloride 60%) per hectare fertilizers were applied. Controlled-release fertilizer was applied by 70% of N compared to the conventional plot. During the rice cropping, the water depth decrease was two times higher in subsurface drainage(SD) plot than non-drained(ND) plot. After harvesting of rice, the bulk density of sub-soil(10-20cm depth) was lower in SD plot than ND plot. After the experiment, the surface soil pH was high at SD plot but sub-soil was high at ND plot. Organic matter content was higher in all soil layer for SD plot than fro ND plot. Available $P_2O_5$ was not different between SD and ND plot for surface soil, but was high for SD plot for sub soil. The $NH_4{^+}-N$ content of soil, shoot dry matter, total nitrogen and $K_2O$ of rice plant were greater after panicle formation stage in SD plot. Total nitrogen content, $P_2O_5$ and $K_2O$ of rice root were high in SD plot after heading. Though the gravity center and 3rd internode length were greater, pulling force of rice root was higher in SD plot than ND plot. Rice yield in SD plot were low at conventional and controlled-release fertilized plot because of the greater field lodging, but yield in SD plot was high at no-fertilized plot. This study indicates that the fertilization level should be decrease on subsurface drainage system for rice cropping.

To improve the uniformity of slurry spreading and to reduce the odor problem, a hose slurry spreader was developed, which spread the slurry near to the surface of the soil. First, the uniformity of slurry spreading was investigated. The best result of 8.1 % CV was obtained at the rotor speed of 250 rpm than any other speeds for the swine slurry, which contains 13.6% of dry matter. In case of dairy cattle slurry, which contains 8.2% of dry matter, the uniformity has the best result of CV 7.2% by high rotor speed of 330 rpm. A high speed of rotor has built a sufficient pressure in the distributor and discharged a uniform quantity of slurry through the hoses. Therefore, in practical use one should work with rotor speed over 300 rpm to maximize the uniformity of slurry spreading. Second, odor test was done with the swine slurry. While the conventional spreader shows ∑ value 440, the hose slurry spreader and its combination of disk harrow show ∑ value 258 and 184 respectively. With the air dilution sensual test and a 3-point odor bag, the conventional spreader shows 66.9 or 35.4 point and by the hose slurry spreader is 9.7 or 11.1 point. So, the developed spreader was found to have a greater effect on the reduction of odor problem. Finally, it is recommended to spread certain amount of the slurry for paddy field equivalent to the chemical fertilizer based on the N-content. It means 22 tons of swine slurry per ha. Since most of the livestock farms possess less arable land, a system of linking farms is necessary to utilize the slurry crossover the farms. The cost of slurry utilization including filling, transport spreading and brokerage is 3200-6800 Won/㎥ in accordance with the transport distance.
This research was carried out to study the effect of mulching materials and weed control methods on weed occurrence and growth of kale on upland and paddy soil of field culture at spring and autumn season. Paddy soil temperature of mulching treatments was high by $0.9{\sim}2.0^{\circ}C$ in comparison of non-mulching at autumn season. The control value of weed was over 91% at mulch paper and time required for weed control was reduced by 70% at mulch paper + machine weeding in comparison of non-mulching + hand weeding. The yield of kale was similar to that of conventional culture. Paddy soil temperature of mulch paper was higher on April, but lower on May and June than non-mulching at spring season. Dominant weed was Chenopodium album var. centrorubrum Makino, The control value of weed was over 91% at mulch paper, time required for weed control was reduced by 75% at mulch paper + machine weeding in comparison of non-mulching + hand weeding and the yield of kale increased by 34% than conventional culture. Dominant weed was Alopecurus aequalis var. amurensis Ohwi. on paddy soil at autumn season. The control value of weed was 43% at mulch paper. Time required for weed control was reduced by 80% at mulch paper + machine weeding in comparison of non-mulching + hand weeding. The yield of kale increased by 26% compared with than of conventional culture.
Field experiments were carried out to investigate the effects of different residue treatment of vetch sward on soil improvement, rice growth and grain yield from 1995 to 1996. With Chinese milkvetch, pH, Ca, and Mg of paddy soil were increased in subsoil(10~20cm soil depth), and organic matter, P$_2$$O_{5}$, and K were increased in top soil (0~10cm soil depth). Redox potential of the paddy soil with milkvetch residue was severely reduced at earlier flooding period, and recovered gradually as rice growth continued. Weeds were more abundant in the paddy with unchanged vetch stand. The most dominant weed species in the paddy soil with vetch sward residue was Echinochloa crus-galli, followed by Leersia japonica, Polygonum hydropiper in the order of abundance. Seedling establishment ratio of rice directly sown over vetch-sward was lower than in conventional tillage paddy(no-vetch, tilled) condition. Rice growth pattern, however, was not significantly affected by vetch sward treatments. The number of tillers per square meter and plant height at heading date were not significantly different among the vetch-sward treatments. Grain yield was the highest in plough of vetch vegetation, followed by conventional (no-vetch, tilled), live-mulching of vetch, vetch-removed, and vetch-desiccated by weedcide. The whole grain rice yield was the lowest in vetch-desiccated by weedcide.
