  • Purpose: There are no reports on amusement-park-related injuries in Korea. Thus, the objective of this study was to describe traumatic injury patterns that occurring in an amusement park. Methods: The medical records of an infirmary were retrospectively reviewed. From January 1, 2008, to December 31 2008, patients who were transferred to the nearest emergency departments of hospitals for the purpose of further test and treatment were enrolled. Demographics, injury types and involved parts of the body were analyzed. Results: A total of 3,608 patients visited an infirmary for traumatic injury and about two-thirds had soft issue injuries. Of those, 191 patients (5.3%) were transferred to the emergency department of a hospital. Of the patients who were transferred to a hospital, laceration and contusion were the responsible injuries for about half. Laceration was the most common injury in pediatric patients, and a sprain or a strain was the most common in adult patients. The most commonly injured parts of the body were the extremities in adult patients. However, in pediatric patients, injuries of the head, face and neck were similar to injuries of the extremities. Conclusion: Soft tissue injury was the most common amusement-park-related injury. Laceration was the most common reason to transfer a patient to a hospital. There were differences in injury type and injured part of the body between adult and pediatric patients.

  • Albizzia julibrissin belonging to the family Leguminosae has been used for the treatment of contusion, sore throat, amnesia, and insomnia in Oriental traditional medicine. The water extract of A. julibrissin induced apoptosis in Jurkat T-acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) cells as measured by cell morphology. The capability of this herb medicine to induce apoptosis was associated with proteolytic cleavage of specific target protein such as beta-catenin protein suggesting the possible involvement of caspases. The purpose of the present study is also to investigate the effect of A. julibrissin on cell cycle progression. Our results showed that GI checkpoint related gene products (cyclin D1, cyclin dependent kinase 4, retinoblastoma, E2F1) were decreased in their protein levels in a dose-dependent manners after treatment of the extract. These results indicate that the increase of apoptotic cell death by A. julibrissin may be due to the inhibition of cell cycle progression in wild type p53-lacking Jurkat cells.

  • This is a report of 3 cases of tumors, which primarily originated from ribs and the sternum. In the first case of multiple myeloma, the patient was 67 year old male with a tumor located on the middle sternum invading the manubrium and the body of the sternum manifesting symptoms after a contusion of the anterior sternum. The sternum was entirely resected and was replaced by tantalum plate to reconstruct the defective chest wall in order to prevent the paradoxical movement during respiration. In the second case of osteogenic sarcoma, the patient was 43 year old male with a tumor located on the costochondral junction of the left 5th rib for 6 months. The left 5th rib was resected between the middle part and sternochondral junction of it including tumor and adjacent soft tissues. In the third case of chondrosarcoma, the patient was 36 year old male with a tumor located near the posterior angles of the right 7th and 8th ribs manifesting back pain on the area where the tumor was located. Resection of right lower lobe was performed since direct invasion of tumor was seen in the superior segment of right lower lobe. This was followed by the resection of both 7th and 8th ribs at the area between the costovertebral junction and the portion 10 em apart from the tumor including the tumor and intercostal soft tissues. Diagnoses of 3 cases of tumors described above were confirmed by histopathologic examination postoperatively. The postoperative courses were uneventful.

  • Non-occlusive mesenteric ischemia (NOMI) encompasses all forms of mesenteric ischemia with patent mesenteric arteries. NOMI is commonly caused by decreased cardiac output resulting in hypoperfusion of peripheral mesenteric arteries. We report a case of NOMI secondary to hemorrhagic shock and rhabdomyolysis due to trauma. A 42-year-old man presented to our trauma center following a pedestrian trauma. On arrival, he was drowsy and in a state of hemorrhagic shock. He was found to have multiple fractures, both lung contusion and urethral rupture. An initial physical examination and abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan revealed no evidence of intra-abdominal injury. High doses of catecholamine were administered for initial 3 days due to unstable vital sign. On day 25 of hospitalization, follow-up abdominal CT scan demonstrated that short segment of small bowel loop was dilated and bowel wall was not enhanced. During exploratory laparotomy, necrosis of the terminal ileum with intact mesentery was detected and ileocecectomy was performed. His postoperative course was uneventful and is under rehabilitation.

  • Apoptosis is a morphologically and biochemically distinct form of cell death that occurs in many different cell types in a wide variety of organisms. Ajbizzia julibrissin belonging the family Leguminosae has been used for the treatment of contusion, sore throat, amnesia, and insomnia in oriental traditional medicine. This study investigates whether the water extract off julibrissin induce apoptotic cell death in Jurkat T-acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) cells. Jurkat cells were increased inhibitions of cell viability in a concentration-dependent manner by A julibrissin. This herbal medicine also caused apoptosis as measured by cell morphology and DNA fragmentation. The capability oft julibrissin to induce apoptosis was associated with proteolytic cleavage of specific target protein such as poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) protein suggesting the possible involvement of caspases. Our result skewed that Bcl-2 and Bax protein levels were not changed in all A julibrissin-treated groups compared to control group. These results suggest that A julibrissin-mediated apoptosis is independent with Bcl-2 related signaling pathway in this cells.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the situation of occurrence of disease and accidence of child care center. The subjects of this study were 17 public district child care centers, but only one center kept their health diary. Therefore, it became finally the only subject for this study. The data were collected through the analysis it's health diary and case reports for emergency. The collected data were analyzed by the number of cases, age and sex, types of case, and the emergency case were analyzed by age, background, types of accidents and follow up. The number of cases of disease and accident in 2002 were 572. In sexual difference, boys more have accident than girls. The teachers and the outsiders also frequently use the health care service. Smallpox and epidemic conjunctivitis were spreaded during winter and summer. In causes of accidents, 'accident by other child' were 98%. In emergency cases, 1 pierced wound, 1 dislocation, 2 dental emergencies, 4 eyeball contusion and bleedings and 2 burns were occurred. all the cases of emergency were performed follow up education. On the basis of above data, there will be needed to intensify health and safety subjects in curriculum for the teacher of child care, and health and safety education for child. Each child care centers must have health care manager and the network for emergency. To enhance the quality of child care service, government have to offer financial and systematical support.

  • Caesalpinia sappan L. has long been commonly used as emmenagogue, analgesic, and a cure for contusion and sprain as well as a remedy for thrombosis in the Oriental medicine. The main constituent of C. sappan is brazilein, which is an antioxidative substance that has a flavonoid structure. In this study, we examined the effect of butanol extract of C. sappan on proliferation and melanogenesis in B16/F10 melanoma cells. After 48h treatment of cells with various concentrations of butanol extract, the cells exhibited a dose-dependent inhibition in their proliferation without apotosis. Therefore, the growth retardation by the extract may be due to the cell arrest, not due to the cell death induced by cytotoxicity. We also estimated total melanin contents as a final product and activity of tyrosinase, a key enzyme, in melanogenesis of B16/F10 melanoma cells. Our result showed that the melanin contents and tyrosinase activity were decreased in butanol extract-treated cells in a dose dependent manner compared to control group. In conclusion, it was observed that butanol extract of C. sappan inhibited melanization of these cells and therefore butanol extract could be developed as skin whitening components of cosmetics.

  • In order to resolve the taxonomic contusion of Acheilognathus limbata from Korea, 17 morphological characters, egg form and cleavage part of A. limbata from Japan and Korea were ompared. These two groups are overlapping each other in morphometric characters mostly, but two characters of snout length and interarbital width percent in head length are distinguished between them. Moreover the Korean and the Japanese specimens are significantly different from each other based on the egg form and, cleavage part of egg. These results indicate that A. limbata from Korea and from Japan are homonyms. So we consider that the target specimens from Korea should be treated Acheifognathus sp. rather than Acheilognathus limbata until further informations are available.
