  • Grid voltage feedforward is extensively used for controlling grid-connected converters. However, the conventional voltage feedforward control reduces the stability margins of the converter connected to a high-impedance grid. The effect mechanism of voltage feedforward on the grid-connected converter control under high-inductive conditions of the grid impedance is clearly explained in this study using the equivalent transformations of control block diagrams. Results show that the delay produced by the digital control is the root cause of this effect. An improved voltage feedforward strategy, in which a bandpass filter (BPF) is introduced into the feedforward path, is proposed to strengthen the converter's robust stability against grid impedance variations. The selection method of the BPF's bandwidth is also provided considering the tradeoff between the response speed to the grid voltage sag and the system's robust stability. The converter can work stably over a wide range of the grid impedance through the proposed approach. Simulation and experimental results fully verify the effectiveness of the BPF-based voltage feedforward strategy.

  • In this study, we developed an impedance sensor capable of controlling electrode polarization by coating iridium oxide (IrOx) on the surface of the screen-printed carbon electrode. IrOx was deposited on the surface of carbon electrodes according to the number of cycles (0~50 cycles) by cyclic voltammetry. Observation of scanning electron microscope images revealed that the size and number of IrOx particles increased as the number of cycles increased. The changes in impedance responses as a function of the NaCl concentration of the as-obtained sensors were investigated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The sensors manufactured in 50 cycles exhibited the best coefficient of determination and reproducibility, attributed to the well-controlled electrode polarization. We further demonstrated the usefulness of the IrOx-based sensor as a diagnosis sensor for dry eye syndrome by comparing the results of the commercially available osmometer and our sensor using actual solution samples.

  • This study provides an assessment on a proposed method for separation of cesium, strontium, and barium using electrochemical reduction at a liquid bismuth cathode in LiCl-KCl eutectic salt, investigated via cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (SEM-EDS). CV studies were performed at temperatures of 723-823 K and concentrations of the target species up to 4.0wt%. Redox reactions occurring during potential sweeps were observed. Concentration of BaCl2 in the salt did not seem to influence the diffusivity in the studied concentration range up to 4.0wt%. The presence of strontium in the system affected the redox reaction of lithium; however, there were no distinguishable redox peaks that could be measured. Impedance spectra obtained from EIS methods were used to calculate the exchange current densities of the electroactive active redox couple at the bismuth cathode. Results show the rate-controlling step in deposition to be the mass transport of Cs+ ions from the bulk salt to the cathode surface layer. Results from SEM-EDS suggest that Cs-Bi and Sr-Bi intermetallics from LiCl-KCl salt are not thermodynamically favorable.

  • Due to space and geographical constraints, the power source may be located outside the island area, resulting in the considerable length of transmission line. In these cases, when an active power is transmitted, unexpected reactive power is generated at a point of common coupling (PCC). Unlike the power transmitted from the power generation source, the reactive power adversely affects the system. This study proposes a new algorithm that controls reactive power at PCC. Causes of reactive power errors are separated into parallel and series components, which allows the algorithm to compensate the reactive current of the inverter output and control reactive power at the PCC through calculations from the impedance, voltage, and current. The proposed algorithm has economic advantages by controlling the reactive power with the inverter of the power source itself, and can flexibly control power against voltage and output variations. Through the simulation, the algorithm was verified by implementing a power source of 3 [kVA] capacity connected to the low voltage system and of 5 [MVA] capacity connected to the extra-high voltage system. Furthermore, a power source of 3 [kVA] capacity inverter is configured and connected to a mock grid, then confirmed through experiments.

  • In this study, the multi perforated plate is used to reduce the compressor noise in the low frequency band inside the refrigerator machine room. To predict the sound absorption results, the impedance of the sound absorption material is measured. Using the measured impedance results, it is confirmed that the results used for FEM analysis is almost similar to the experimental values. The sound-absorbing structure that can operate in the target frequency band inside the refrigerator machine room is designed by controlling the hole diameter and arrangement in the perforated plate. The effect of reducing noise in the low frequency band is confirmed by applying perforated plate-based sound absorbing structures to the machine room.

  • In this paper, we present the 3DOF force-reflecting interface which allows to acquire force of object within a virtual environment. This system is composed of device, virtual environment model, and force-reflecting rendering algorithm. We design a 3 DOF force-reflecting device using the parallel linkage, torque shared by wire, and the controller of system applied by impedance control algorithm. The force-reflecting behaviour implemented as a function position is equivalent to controlling the mechanical impedance felt by the user. Especially how force should be supplied to user, we know using a God-Object algorithm. As we experiment a system implemented by the interface of 3D virtual object and 3DOF force-reflecting interface, we can feel a contact, non-contact of 3D virtual object surface and sensing of push button model.

  • The corrosion inhibition nature of Ginger affinale extract for the corrosion of mild steel in 0.5N $H_2SO_4$ was investigated using weight loss, electrochemical impedance and potentiodynamic polarization methods. The results revealed that Ginger affinale extract acts as a good corrosion inhibitor in 0.5N $H_2SO_4$ medium. The inhibition efficiency increased with an increase in inhibitor concentration. The inhibition could be attributed to the adsorption of the inhibitor on the steel surface.

  • A damped sinusoidal electromagnetic pulse generator was designed, fabricated and tested. The pulse generator consisted of an oscillator(a spark gap switch and an initially charged low impedance line) and a high impedance antenna. This generator was capable of producing damped sinusoidal pulses at closure of the spark gap switch. A Marx generator was employed to supply the Pulse generator with high voltage pulses. While the pulse generator was provided with the high voltage pulses of 200kV from the Marx generator, its output power was maximized by controlling the pressure of the gas contained in the spark gap switch. The output power of the damped sinusoidal electromagnetic pulse oscillator was 1.3GW and the amplitude of electric field radiated from the pulse generator was 4kV/m at the range of 25m.

  • A modified half wavelength loaded line antenna is designed and implemented for mobile terminal applications. The antenna is constructed with a radiating element of half wavelength loaded line structure, dielectric substrate, feeding post and two shorting posts on the experimental PCB. The shorting posts are located at each side of the radiating element and lumped inductance elements are on between each shorting post and ground of PCB. By controlling value of inductors, one can adjust resonant frequency and input impedance respectively. Within inductance value of 12 nH, the antenna can have wide operating range of $1,470\~2,660\;MHz$ and good impedance matching. The measured peak gains are between -0.45 dBi and 2.03 dBi for the operating band.

  • For this study, we designed an implantable rectangular spiral antenna for medical biotelemetry in the Medical Implant Communications Service band (402 MHz to 405 MHz). The designed antenna has a U-shaped loop for impedance matching. The antenna impedance is easily adjusted by controlling the shape and length of the U-shaped loop. Significant design parameters were studied to understand their effects on the antenna performance. To verify the potential of the antenna for the desired applications, we fabricated a prototype and measured its performance in terms of the resonant characteristics and gain radiation patterns of the antenna. In the testing phase, the prototype antenna was embedded in human skin tissue-emulating gel, which was developed to simulate a real operation environment. The measured resonant characteristics show good agreement with the simulations, and the -10 dB frequency band is within the range of 398 MHz to 420 MHz. The antenna exhibits a maximum gain of -22.26 dBi and an antenna efficiency of 0.215%.
