A CSTR (Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor) is a highly nonlinear process with varying parameters during operation. Therefore, tuning of the controller and determining the transition policy of controller parameters are required to guarantee the best performance of the CSTR for overall operating regions. In this paper, a methodology employing the 2DOF (Two-Degree-of-Freedom) PID controller, the anti-windup technique and a fuzzy gain scheduler is presented for the temperature control of the CSTR. First, both a local model and an EA (Evolutionary Algorithm) are used to tune the optimal controller parameters at each operating region by minimizing the IAE (Integral of Absolute Error). Then, a set of controller parameters are expressed as functions of the gain scheduling variable. Those functions are implemented using a set of "if-then" fuzzy rules, which is of Sugeno's form. Simulation works for reference tracking, disturbance rejecting and noise rejecting performances show the feasibility of using the proposed method.

An iterative tuning technique is derived for PID controllers which are widely used in industries. The tuning algorithm is based upon a fuzzy indirect reasoning method and an iterative technique. The PID gains for the first tuning action are determined by a method which is modified from the Ziegler-Nichols step response method. The first PID gains are determined to obtain a control performance so close to a design performance that the following tuning process can be made effectively. The design paramaters are given as time-domain variables which human is familiar with. The results of simulation studies show that the proposed tuning method can produce an effective tuning for arbitrary design performances.

This paper describes an accurate and stable current control method of switched reluctance motors(SRMs), which have recently attracted considerable wide attention owing to their favorable features, such as high performance, high durability, structural simplicity, low cost, etc. In most cases, the PI controllers(PICC) have been used mostly for the current control of electric motors because their algorithm and selection of controller gain are relatively simpler compared to other controllers. On the other hand, the PI controller requires an adjustment of the controller gains for each operating point when nonlinear system parameters change rapidly. This paper presents a stable current control method of an SRM using self-tuning fuzzy current controller(STFCC) under nonlinear parameter variation. The performance of the considered method is validated via a dynamic simulation of the current controlled SRM drive using Matlab/Simulink program.

This paper proposes an online gain tuning algorithm for a robust sliding mode speed controller of surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor (SPMSM) drives. The proposed controller is constructed by a fuzzy neural network control (FNNC) term and a sliding mode control (SMC) term. Based on a fuzzy neural network, the first term is designed to approximate the nonlinear factors while the second term is used to stabilize the system dynamics by employing an online tuning rule. Therefore, unlike conventional speed controllers, the proposed control scheme does not require any knowledge of the system parameters. As a result, it is very robust to system parameter variations. The stability evaluation of the proposed control system is fully described based on the Lyapunov theory and related lemmas. For comparison purposes, a conventional sliding mode control (SMC) scheme is also tested under the same conditions as the proposed control method. It can be seen from the experimental results that the proposed SMC scheme exhibits better control performance (i.e., faster and more robust dynamic behavior, and a smaller steady-state error) than the conventional SMC method.
In this paper, robust control method using fuzzy PI parameter tuning is proposed to control constant thrust force on load variation. First, a structure and thrust force equations of the LPM are described. Second, an controller with PI parameter-tuning using a fuzzy theory is proposed to achieve high-precision position with constant thrust force of the LPM. Finally, the effectiveness of an fuzzy PI controller is demonstrated by some simulated and experimental results. Accurate tracking response and superior dynamic performance can be obtained due to the powerful on-line Fuzzy PI gain tuning method with regard parametric variations and load thrust force variations.
In the mechanical system, optimization of motion control is very essential in the aspect of automation technique progress. In the servo system, the function of controller is very important but most of the controllers have played only the role of pulse generator because the controller with main function is very expensive. In this thesis, the system was composed of PC, commonly used driver AC servo motor and a produced control board. The PC transmit a gain, a locus data to a driver and controller. At the same time, it converts imformation from the controller and convert them into data and offer an output with graph. The role of a controller is to trasmit a locus data to a driver and counting the pulse on the phase of an encoder to the PC. We have performed the experiment in order to confirm with variable PID parameter capable of the optimization of gain tuning with the counting of feedback control sensor signal with regard to the external interface into the system, such as torque. Based on the experiment result, we have confirmed as follows: First, it was confirmed that we could easily input control factors P.I Gain, constant $K_P,\;K_I$ into PC. Second, not only pulse generator function was possible, but with this pulse it was also possible to count using software with PIC chip. And third, using the multi-purpose PIC micro chip, simple operation and the formation of small size AC Servo Controller was possible.

Though various techniques have been studied as a way of adjusting parameters of PID controllers, no perfect method of determining parameters is available to date. Especially the deign of PID controller for unstable processes with dead time(UPWDT) is even more difficult due to various reasons. Generally the existing design procedures for UPWDT involve deriving formulas to meet gain and phase margin specifications, or using inner loop to stabilize UPWDT before applying PID controller. In this paper, the dual-input describing function(DIDF) method is proposed, by which the performance and robustness of the closed-loop system can be improved. The method is based on moving the critical point (-1+j0) of Nyquist stability to a new position arbitrarily selected on the complex plane. This can be done by determining appropriate coefficients of the DIDF. As a result, we can easily determine parameters of PID-type controller by using existing conventional tuning methods for stable or unstable systems. Simulation results are included to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.
This paper presents precise temperature control of oil outlet in an oil cooler with hot-gas bypass control as an industrial refrigerator. The control system was designed for obtaining precise temperature control performance even though abrupt disturbances based on flow rate control of hot-gas bypass. PID controller was adopted in feedback control system. We showed that the gain of PID could be easily determined by using gain-tuning methods without any numerical model. Through some experiments, excellent control performances such as overshoot within 1.7%, steady state temperature error within ${\pm}0.1^{\circ}C$ were established by a simple PI controller. We expect that the system can control the target temperature within error of $0.33^{\circ}C$ under abrupt disturbances.
Automatic guidance of farm tractors would improve productivity by reducing operator fatigue and increasing machine performance. To control tractors within $\pm$5cm of the desired path, fuzzy and adaptive steering controllers were developed to evaluate their characteristics and performance. Two input variables were position and yaw errors, and a steering command was fed to tractor model as controller output. Trapezoidal membership functions were used in the fuzzy controller, and a minimum-variance adaptive controller was implemented into the 2-DOF discrete-time input-output model. For unit-step and composite paths, a dynamic tractor simulator was used to test the controllers developed. The results showed that both controllers could control the tractor within $\pm$5cm error from the defined path and the position error of tractor by fuzzy controller was the bigger of the two. Through simulations, the output of self-tuning adaptive controller was relatively smooth, but the fuzzy controller was very sensitive by the change of gain and the shape of membership functions. Contrarily, modeling procedure of the fuzzy controller was simple, but the adaptive controller had very complex procedure of design and showed that control performance was affected greatly by the order of its model.

With only the classical PID controller applied to control of a DC motor, good (target) performance characteristic of the controller can be obtained if all the model parameters of DC motor and operating conditions such as external load torque, disturbance, etc. are known exactly. However, in case when some of system parameters or operating conditions are uncertain or unknown, the fixed PID controller does not guarantee good performance, which is assumed with precisely known system parameters and operating conditions. In view of this and the robustness enhancement of DC motor control system, we propose a PID learning controller which consists of a set of learning rules for PID gain tuning and learning of an auxiliary input. The proposed PID learning controller is shown to drive the state of uncertain DC motor system with unknown system parameters and external load torque to the desired one world wide asymptotically. Computer simulation and experimental results are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed PID learning controller, thereby showing its superiority to the conventional fixed PID controller.
