Implementation of CAN-based Fire Detection System for Smart Home (스마트 홈을 위한 CAN 기반 화재 감지 시스템의 구현)

  • This paper presents a network based fire detection system using CAN, in order to evaluate feasibility of home automation protocol for smart home. In general, because a traditional fire detection system has an analog transmission method with 4-20mA current, it has several shortcomings such as weakness to noise. Hence, as an alternative to the traditional system, this paper presents the architecture of CAN based fire detection system and the design method of CAN communication network. Also, the performance of the suggested system is evaluated through an experimental testbed. Especially, CAN has several advantages such as low cost and easiness of implementation compared to Ethernet or ARCNET, which are low layer of BACNet. Therefore, if CAN is adopted as low layer of BACNet, the home automation system is implemented more effectively.

  • Two processors are generally used to drive the power circuits for controlling the dual motors independently. In this paper, we propose the new control scheme to drive dual inverters using only one controller with the aid of CAN network. The proposed system is very useful compared to conventional techniques especially in case of controlling the combined dual motors because the control algorithm can be implemented by the software program only without any additional processor or hardware interfacing. The proposed system is implemented and verified experimentally.

  • In this paper, we present the mechanical, electrical system design and system integration of controllers including sensory devices of the humanoid, KHR-2 (KAIST Humanoid Robot - 2). We have developed KHR-2 since 2003. Total number of DOF of KHR-2 is 41. Each arm including a hand has 11 DOF and each leg has 6 DOF. Head and trunk also has 6 DOF and 1 DOF respectively. In head, two CCD cameras are used for eye. To control all axes efficiently, distributed control architecture is used to reduce computation burden of main controller and to expand devices easily. So we developed the sub-controller as a servo motor controller and a sensor interfacing devices using microprocessor. The main controller attached its back communicates with sub-controllers in real-time by CAN (Controller Area Network) protocol. We used Windows XP as its OS (Operation System) for fast development of main control program and easy extension of peripheral devices. And RTX HAL extension commercial software is used to realize the real-time control in Windows XP environment.

  • In this paper, we propose a scheduling method for signal measurement and control algorithm execution in a multi-motor drive controller. The multi-motor controller which is used for vehicle control receives position/velocity command and performs position/velocity control and current control. Internal resource allocation and control algorithm execution timing are very important when one microcontroller is used for multi-motor drives. The control performance of the velocity control system is verified by varying ADC(Analog to Digital Converter) conversion timing and algorithm execution timing using real experiments.

  • In this paper, we propose a Micro Real-Time Control System (MRTCS) for decreasing the delay during interrupts processing and data transfer on sensor nodes. The MRTCS consists of a control, sensor nodes based on Controller Area Network (CAN) device. The control node was designed with Real Time Operating System (RTOS) on top of the small Micro Control Unit (sMCU). Sensor nodes have the CAN device without sMCU, which have multiple Digital Inputs, Outputs (DI/DO) and the CAN controller. We have evaluated with OCTAVE v3.6.4 from open source for system performance. Simulation results show that the system performance was increased through the delay reducing for interrupt processing and internal data transfer. We verify that a proposed MRTCS approach will be adapted to various real-time control system.

  • The rapid growth of the mobile Internet has enabled its application area to expand, and its users want services that require more bandwidth for multimedia services. There are limits to support the various multimedia service to mobile station provided by existing mobile communications. The wireless MAN called the IEEE 802.16 Broadband Wireless Access systems which the IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN is similar to wireline Internet service being able to supper a various contents is used and is designed to consider a handoff is studying. Especially, TG(Task Group)e of IEEE 802.16 is in progress discussion to support a handoff to higher layer using BS(Base Station) or unit of sector, to UC. Yet a scheme is not detail. This thesis proposes the network model for IEEE 802.16e to support a soft handoff between BSs to use a mobile communication network called cdma2000 Ix EV-DO network. The proposed network model supports soft handoff to add a management skill in MA of each BS for MC(Mobility Controller). The proposed network model has merits that is able to apply existing systems as it is and that is able to use a various multimedia service, when using a wireless Internet.

  • The Traffic controller currently used in Korea is a switch control system that directly transfers 220V of high voltage to traffic lights one to one. This method requires a lot of cables, and there are concerns about electric shock. Accordingly, Korea Road Traffic Authority added the digital communication signal controller standard using digital communication method to the standard specification of the communication signal controller of the National Police Agency. Based on these specifications, this paper intended to develop digital communication call controllers. In addition, it was verified that even if the digital communication signal controller and analogue communication call controller were mixed, they could operate in the signal control system currently in operation.

  • This paper analyses the performance of network system using the CAN(Controller Area Network) protocol. Given messages are assumed to be scheduled by the DMS(Deadline Monotonic Scheduling) algorithm. The mathematical models for time-delay that can be occurred between CAN nodes are defined. The effectiveness of modeling is shown by comparing the difference of time-delay between simulations and practical experiments. We analyse the results according to the variation of factors, such as the number of nodes, the transmission speed, the message size and the number of aperiodic messages through simulation and confirm the real-time performance of lower priority messages. We also investigate the real-time performance of periodic messages when aperiodic message generates.

  • The automobile networks consist of the communication bus systems which become independent and heterogeneous each other. Most often, the CAN buses are implemented in a car in order to connect all the electronic control units in various ways. Thus, some gateways are necessary for exchanging the useful information between electronic control units on the buses. The automobile body networks group is divided into two kinds on a large scale, namely the low-speed bus and the high-speed bus. To interchange messages between the two, a CAN signal gateway is designed and implemented in a miniature scale. A network analyzer (called "Vehicle spy") and an oscilloscope monitor network situation to confirm the due operation of CAN signal gateway. The efficiency of the designed gateway is evaluated. The more message thread increased, the more efficiency decreased.

  • Many surveillance cameras used in security system are controlled with RS-485 communication protocol. In this situation, if RS-485 connection can be replaced with wireless connection using sensor network technology, an installation will become ease because of no wired connection and also a deployment of cameras will become free. This paper explains about the design of wireless sensor node and the necessary implementation for an operation, which can be replacing RS-485 connection for the development of CCTV control system based on wireless sensor network. The hardware platform of sensor node was designed based on MicaZ and the software was developed based on TinyOS. To control surveillance cameras deployed on wide area, the supporting of multi-hop also was implemented. With the result of experiment deploying on real environment, it was revealed that the controller could control cameras quickly with wireless.
