Alginic acid is a hydrophilic , colloidal polysaccharide obtained from cell wall of seaweed or brown algae and has a broad range of applications. Alginlc acid becomes alginate gel bead due to its cation-induced gelation. Dried alginate beads can be reswollen according to environmental pH. The purpose of this paper is to explore the possible applicability of alginate beads as an oral controlled release system of ibuprofen. In this experiment ibuprofen was incorporated in alginate beads and alginate beads were treated with various methods. Ibuprofen release from alginate beads in phosphate buffer (pH 7.4) was laster than in distilled water and dilute HCl. The release of ibuprofen was more sustained in bead than simple mixture and coprecipitate of ibuprofen and sodium alginate. The dissolution rate of ibuprofen was decreased in using of bead that hardened with formaldehyde. The dissolution rate of the drug from the bead was the fastest in 12 hour dried beads, 1.5%-sodium alginate concentration and 1%-calcium chloride concentration. Sodium alginate bead can be used as a sustaind release drug delivery system of water-insoluble drugs.
This study was aimed to control the release characteristics of ketoprofen by microencapsulating $ketoprofen-{\beta}-cyclodextrin\;(KF-{\beta}-CyD)$ solid dispersion with Eudragit RS by the phase separation method using a nonaqueous vehicle. KF alone was also microencapsulated with Eudragit RS by the evaporation process in water phase. The results obtained showed that it was not possible to microencapsulate KF alone by phase separation in a chloroform-cyclohexane system while it was easy to microencapsulate $(KF-{\beta}-CyD)$ solid dispersion system. For the microcapsules, the release test was performed in the first fluid (pH 1.2) and the second fluid (pH 6.8) of K.P.V disintegration medium at $37^{\circ}C$. The release of KF from $(KF-{\beta}-CyD)$ solid dispersion microcapsules (1:1 core wall ratio) was more sustained than that from KF microcapsules, and followed zero-order kinetics. Especially, solid dispersion microcapsules showed pH-independent release patterns with higher wall to core ratio (1:1 w/w).
Allyl isothiocyanate (AI), a volatile compound of mustard, has excellent antimicrobial effects, but its volatility hinders its wide usage as an ingredient of food products. Microencapsulation technique, therefore, was applied for delaying the release time of AI. For delaying the release time of AI, the mustard powder, which contained AI, was microencapsulated with 5% modified starch by using fluidized bed processing. The efficiency of the controlled release of AI at various pH was analyzed by the head space (HS) analysis and solid phase microextraction (SPME) method using gas chromatography (GC). Also, modified starch encapsulated powder was added into kimchi for applying in food industry. As the result, the release time of AI was delayed by microencapsulation with modified starch and the higher pH could be the faster release of AI. Also, the period until the pH values and total acidity of kimchi reached up to 4.5 and 0.6%, which give its malsour taste, was extended by microencapsulation. These results showed that modified starch encapsulated powder could prolong the preservation in food system.

The aim of this study was to prepare cyclosporin A-loaded liposome (CyA-Lip) as an oral delivery carrier, with their encapsulation into microspheres based on alginate or extracellular polysaccharide (EPS) p-m10356. The main advantage of liposomes in the microspheres (LIMs) is to improve the restricted drug release property from liposomes and their stability in the stomach environment. Alginate microspheres containing CyA-Lip were prepared with a spray nozzle; CyA-Liploaded EPS microspheres were also prepared using a w/o emulsion method. The shape of the LIMs was spherical and uniform, and the particle size of the alginate-LIMs ranged from 5 to $10\;{\mu}m$, and that of the EPS-LIMs was about $100\;{\mu}m$. In a release test, release rate of CyA in simulated intestinal fluid (SIF) from the LIMs was significantly enhanced compared to that in simulated gastric fluid (SGF). In addition, the CyA release rates were slower from formulations containing the liposomes compared to the microspheres without the liposome. Therefore, alginate-and EPS-LIMs have the potential for the controlled release of CyA and as an oral delivery system.

We prepared sustained release matrix system which contains carvedilol with Compritol 888 ATO used as lipophilic sustained release excipient and hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC) or polyethylene oxide (PEO) used as hydrophilic sustained release polymer. Wet granulation compressed method was used for preparing carvedilol sustained release matrix tablets. When carvedilol sustained release matrix tablets were prepared, we evaluated the drug release kinetics which is affected by Compritol 888 ATO ratio, a kind of hydrophilic polymer (HPMC, PEO) and hot melt coating coagglutination (HMCC) process was done. The drug release kinetics was measured for 24 hours in pH 1.2 simulated gastric fluid and pH 6.8 simulated intestinal fluid, using a dissolution tester at $37.5^{\circ}C$ in 50 rpm. Dissolution rate of controlled release matrix tablets of carvedilol was evaluated by paddle method. We confirmed that HMCC process was very effective to controlled release of drugs. The rate of Compritol 888 ATO, as a lipidic material, can control the drug release pattern about the elution rate of 95% and 24 hours delay than that of the normal tablet.

For the administration of narcotic antagonist with short half-life and low patient compliance, the sustained release system using biodegradable matrix is effective. Polyphosphazenes are of considerable interest as biodegradable matrix systems for controlled release of drugs. In this study, biodegradable polyphosphazenes available for the sustained release implantable device were synthesized, and their application was examined. Poly[dichlorophosphazene] was synthesized by solution polymerization method and confirmed with IR spectrum. Poly[bis(ethyl glycinate) phosphazene] and poly[ (diethyl glutamate)-co-(ethyl glycinate)phosphazene] were then produced by substitution of amino acid alkyl esters for chloride side groups. Using these polymers, the implantable devices of 1 mm thickness and $10{\times}10\;mm$ size containing naloxone hydrochloride were prepared and their release and degradation profiles were measured. In the case of poly[bis(ethyl glycinate)phosphazene] with swelling characteristics, degradation rate was slower than the release rate, showing that the release rate is partly dependent on the swelling rate. In contrast, the degradation rate of polyl[(diethyl glutamate)-co-(ethyl glycinate)phosphazene] matrix was identical with release rate of naloxone hydrochloride. On the basis of these results, it is expected that these polymers can be applied to sustained release implantable systems delivering narcotic antagonist.
Matrix type silicone rubber devices were designed for long-term implantable drug delivery system. Release controlling agents (RCA), i.e., polypropylene glycol, polyethylene glycol, were employed to control drug release from the devices. The release rate of drug from RCA dispersed silicone matrices was mainly dependent on hydrophilicity-hydrophobicity of drug and RCA. In the case of hydrophilic drug, the release from the RCA dispersed matrix was regulated by swelling kinetics. Especially when the relatively hydrophobic polypropylene glycol was used, swelling control mechanism induced zero-order release kinetics. Whereas, the release of hydrophobic drug was resulted from partition mechanism. The effect of RCA was to increase drug diffusivity.
This work reported the trends of bioceramic materials for beauty-care applications with the several represent examples - tone-up, sun-care and anti-pollution cosmetics. The development of cosmetic techniques was discussed and reviewed with various ceramic hybrid materials. Moreover, we also reported the preparation and application of functional cosmetics with silicified liposome particles as a good make-up material for controlled release with natural compounds. The homogeneous loading and highly controlled-release formulation with porous and silicified ceramic liposome ceramic materials were discussed.
Gentamicin sulfate (GS)-loaded poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate)(PHBV) devices were prepared for controlled-release of antibiotics. In this study, the effects of thickness, hydroxyvalerate (HV) content, initial drug-loading ratio, and additive content on the release profile have been investigated. The morphology of devices was examined with scanning electron microscope (SEM) before and after in vitro release; their highly porous surface and cross-sectional were observed. It could be suggested that device would be affected by the packing of the HV and additive content, which would depend on their structure. A high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used to detect and quantify the release of GS from the device. The drug release from all the devices showed biphasic release patterns, and some matrices released the incorporated antibiotic throughout 30 days with a near zero-order release rate. The release patterns were shown to be changed by altering the thickness, copolymer ratio, and additive content.
In this study, we prepared naproxen (NP) imprinted biodegradable polymer based multi-layer biomaterials using allbanggae starch (ABS), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and alginic acid (SA), and investigated their physicochemical properties and the controlled drug release effects. In addition, the prepared multi-layer biomaterials were characterized by FE-SEM and FT-IR. In order to confirm the controlled drug release effect for the transdermal drug delivery system (TDDS), the NP release properties of NP imprinted multi-layer biomaterials were investigated using various pH buffer solutions and artificial skin at 36.5 ℃. The results of NP release in various pH buffer solutions indicated that the NP release at high pH was about 1.3 times faster than that at low pH. In addition, NP release in multi-layer biomaterials was about 4.0 times slower than that in single-layer biomaterials. It was confirmed that the NP release rate in triple-layer biomaterials was 4.0 times slower than that in single-layer biomaterials while using artificial skin. Also, it could be found that NP in double-layer biomaterials and triple-layer biomaterials was released sustainably for 12 h. The NP release mechanism in pH buffer solutions followed the Fickian diffusion mechanism, but followed the non-Fickian diffusion mechanism with artificial skin.
