  • In Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) which realizes continuous mappings, the output errors is directly affected by the weight errors which may be caused by the limited precision of digital or analog hardware in implementations. So, it is important to study the sensitivity due to the perturbation of connection weights between neurons. In this paper, we derive a sensitivity function to the statistical weight perturbations in MLP with differentiable activation functions. This sensitivity function can be regarded as an ensemble average of deterministic sensitivity measures due to the perturbations of weights. Hence, this sensitivity function can be used as the criteria for selecting weights with the minimum sensitivity among possible sets of connection weights in MLP. For the verification of the validity of the proposed sensitivity function, computer simulations have been performed and through the simulations we find good agreement between the theoretical and simulation results.

  • = ABSTRACT =Objectives : We evaluated the effect of the aircraft noise on the behavior and affect status of the local elementary school students. Methods : The daytime noise levels of the exposed and control areas were compared and the self answered questionnaires from 272 students and their parents of the exposed area and 91 of the control area were collected. The questionnaires are regarding the noise sensitivity and the psychosocial status of the students, noise sensitivity of the parents and the parents' behavioral evaluation for their children. Results : The mean noise level of the exposed area (67.6 dB(A)) showed higher level than the control area (57.1 dB(A), 58.2 dB(A), 60.2 dB(A)) and it was statistically significant. The mean score for noise sensitivity and the mean score for brief mental exam. in the exposed students were lower than the mean scores in the control group but they were not statistically significant (p=0.056 & 0.165). The mean score for behavioral evaluation of students by their parents in the exposed area(15.5) was higher than the mean score in the control group(13.2) and it was statistically significant(p=0.043). The mean score for noise sensitivity in the exposed parent(27.5) was higher than the mean score in the control group(24.1) and it was statistically significant(p=0.045). Conclusions : This study revealed that the noise sensitivity of the parents affected the behavioral evaluation of the students than noise-exposure itself. The further study is needed to evaluate relationship between aircraft noise and it's effect on children's health.

  • Static variations of cutting forces are estimated using spindle motor current. Static sensitivity of spindle motor current is higher than feed motor current. The linear relationship between the cutting force and RMS value of the spindle motor current is obtained. Using cutting force estimation, tool overload in milling process can be well detected, and cutting force is regulated at a constant level by feedrate adaptive control.

  • This paper considers a time delay control of noncolocated flexible mechanical systems in discrete time domain. A stability criterion suggested in the previous paper is,extended in the consideration of infinite mode property of flexible systems and finite control sampling frequency. Based on the stability criterion, the one step advanced discrete time derivative control is suggested, which can stabilize infinite number of modes of a flexible system. The sensitivity analysis shows the robustness of the one step advanced control to the system parameter uncertainties and time delay errors. Application to a simply supported beam verifies the extended stability criterion and the effectiveness of the one step advanced D-control.

  • In this paper a new controller is proposed which gives the resultant system the appointed input-output properties, low sensitivity and robust stability. The proposed controller consists of a reference model and a robust compensator. The reference model determines the input-output properties of the total system and is constructed by using the nominal model of the plant. We can design the reference model by applying design techniques which pay attention to steady robustness and no attention to sensitivity and robust stability, and need all state variables of the plant. The robust compensator is obtained as a solution of the mixed sensitivity problem in H infinity control theory. Therefore, low sensitivity and robust stability are guaranteed in the resultant system. The simulation experiments show that the proposed controller is effective and useful.

  • An in-process method of diagnosing the spool wear of hydraulic servovalves was explored. The diagnostic method discussed in this paper is for force-control hydraulic servo systems. The key principle used is that pressure sensitivity of a servovalve drops as the valve spool wears out so that it is possible to determine the spool condition by monitoring pressure sensitivity. A diagnostic algorithm was developed and evaluated through numerical simulation and experiments. Two major steps of diagnosis are the evaluation of null bias of the servovalve and the approximation of pressure sensitivity, both of which could be successfully done during normal operation of a servo system. The difference between a new servovalve and a worn valve could be clearly detected in-process, and the diagnostic test was found to be repeatable.

  • NOx sensing properties of $Ba_2WO_5$ were investigated by varying the sintering temperature in an effort to study the effects of the neck-width on gas sensitivity. $Ba_2WO_5$ sintered at $800^{\circ}C$, which exhibits neck-controlled conduction provides highest sensitivity of 47 and 29 at $500^{\circ}C$ to NO and $NO_2$, respectively. The samples sintered beyond $800^{\circ}C$ show sintering temperature-independent gas sensitivity. This may be because the grain boundary control is dominant at lower sintering temperatures and open neck control is dominant at higher sintering temperatures than $800{\circ}C$. The NOx sensing mechanism of $Ba_2WO_5$ was briefly discussed.

  • This two-part paper presents a control method that allows for stable interaction of a robot manipulator with environment. In part 1, we focus on the input output relationships (unstructured modeling) of the robot and environment dynamics. This analysis leads to a general condition for stability of the robot and environment taken as a whole. This stability condition, for stable maneuver, prescribes a finite sensitivity for robot and environment where sensitivity of the robot (or the environment) is defined as a mapping forces into displacement. According to this stability condition, smaller sensitivity either in robot or in environment leads to narrower stability range. In the limit, when both systems have zero sensitivity, stability cannot be guaranteed. These models do not have any particular structure, yet they can model a wide variety of industrial and research robot manipulators and environment dynamic behavior. Although this approach of modeling may not lead to and design procedure, it will allow us to understand the fundamental issues in stability when a robot interacts with an environment.

  • In this paper, a 3D shape optimization algorithm which guarantees a smooth optimal shape is presented using parameterized sensitivity analysis. The design surface is parameterized using Bezier spline and the control points of the spline are taken as the design variables. The parameterized sensitivity for the control points are found from that for nodal Points. The design sensitivity and adjoint variable formulae are also derived for the 3D non-linear problems. Through an application to the shape optimization of 3D electromagnet to get a uniform magnetic field, the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is shown.

  • The neutral valve for controlling the HST is one of the important valves for the vehicle control. Neutral valve takes a role of blocking or transmitting power to the vehicle. The operating principle of the neutral valve was developed through the analysis model. We also investigated the logical validity by analyzing the results of the analysis model. The analysis model was developed by using SimulationX witch is commercial software. The number of holes in the piston was selected as a variable initial compression of the spring, and the magnitude of the pressure pulsations and the diameter of the orifice for the sensitivity analysis were performed to design sensitivity analysis of the neutral valve.
