  • This paper proposes a novel analysis method on the driving performance of LIM (linear induction motor) by FEM (finite element method). First, a linear model was converted with a rotation model to perform the dynamic analysis for a long time. Through the FEM model, the slip parameter for the control algorithm could be induced effectively. The LIM for the traction system was performed at a constant V/f in the region of constant torque, and a constant V and variable f in the region of constant power. Several slip characteristic curves according to the voltage and frequency were calculated by FEM in advance. The driving performance was then induced by interpolating the slip characteristic curves according to the load of the vehicle.

  • As many mobile devices such as smart phones and tablets are widely spread, optimized mobile video encoder used during video recording application is needed. In this paper, we implemented H.264/AVC base profile video encoder on a mobile device and empirically optimized control parameters of the encoder. As the experiment, we more than 100 test cases were designed with varying Lagrangian optimization, Hadamard Transform, search range, I-frame period, and reference frames. During the experiment, we measured picture quality, bit-rate, encoding time, motion estimation time, and power consumption. From the result, we can determine optimal values for the H.264 control parameters.

  • A new multi-scale simulation model is proposed to analyze heart mechanics. Electrophysiology of a cardiac cell is numerically approximated using the previous model of human ventricular myocyte. The ion transports across cell membrane initiated by action potential induce an excitation-contraction mechanism in the cell via cross bridge dynamics. Negroni and Lascano model (NL model) is employed to calculate the tension of cross bridge which is closely related to the ion dynamics in cytoplasm. To convert the tension on cell level into contraction force of cardiac muscle, we introduce a simple geometric model of ventricle with a thin-walled hemispheric shape. It is assumed that cardiac tissue is composed of a set of cardiac myocytes and its orientation on the hemispheric surface of ventricle remains constant everywhere in the domain. Application of Laplace law to the ventricle model enables us to determine the ventricular pressure that induces blood circulation in a body. A lumped parameter model with 7 compartments is utilized to describe the systemic circulation interacting with the cardiac cell mechanism via NL model and Laplace law. Numerical simulation shows that the ion transports in cell level eventually generate blood hemodynamics on system level via cross bridge dynamics and Laplace law. Computational results using the present multi-scale model are well compared with the existing ones. Especially it is shown that the typical characteristics of heart mechanics, such as pressure volume relation, stroke volume and ejection fraction, can be generated by the present multi-scale cardiovascular model, covering from cardiac cells to circulation system.

  • The IEEE 802.11e working group has announced a new distributed MAC(Medium Access Control) called EDCA(Enhanced Distributed Channel Access) to provide service differentiation among classified traffics. In comparison with the 802.11 legacy MAC, the EDCA provides QoS mechanism by differentiated channel access which is called AC(Access Category) to the frames with different priorities. In multimedia applications, however, the EDCA has some difficulties to achieve QoS throughput because of using fixed AC parameters and never considers overall throughputs, i.e. fairness, for classified services. In this paper, AC parameter control technique is proposed to achieve overall QoS throughputs with differentiated services. The proposed technique controls AC parameters dynamically in real time. Simulation is used to verify the technique and the simulation shows that QoS fairness is improved by 13% in throughput deviation in multimedia environments including voice, video and data service.

  • In this paper, a modified FSA(Frequency Scaling Algorithm) is proposed for KOMPSAT-5 high-resolution SAR image generation. In order to enhance performance of azimuth compression, degraded in sub-aperture processing due to the imperfect geometric parameter of data acquisition, the full-aperture signal processing algorithm is designed based on the exact time-frequency analysis. In addition, an azimuth scaling function is newly devised to make the full-aperture processing algorithm suitable for KOMPSAT-5 sliding-spotlight mode. Different from the previous sub-aperture FSA schemes, the suggested technique could accommodate the merit of unified signal processing structure regardless of operational modes of KOMPSAT-5. Through the point target simulation, it is verified that the suggested algorithm provides superior performance of azimuth compression over the existing full-aperture processing methods. The experimental results using real data acquired by KOMPSAT-5 are also given to demonstrate the effectiveness of our scheme as well.

  • Radiant floor heating systems have been used as common heating supply systems in most residential buildings in Korea. Since the system uses a floor as thermal storage, proper control strategy should be adopted to avoid over-or under-heating problems. So far, studies related to control of the floor heating system have been conducted based on computer simulations. The active layer in TRNSYS is known for its usability as a floor heating system model and is integrated with the TRNSYS building model (Type 56). However, floor heating system simulations with the active layer are operated only if pre-defined minimum mass flow rate is ensured. This study proposes a simple RC (Resistance-Capacitance) model for radiant floor heating systems. Model parameters such as Rs and Cs are defined by optimization. The active layer, in this study, is used as the target system to search for optimal values. A TRNOPT optimization tool was used to conduct optimization under given simulation conditions. The RC model with optimal parameters are tested in other mass flow rates that were not used during optimization. Results reveal the RC model describes the active layer with successfully optimized model parameters. The RC model has fewer model limitations, and is expected to be used for various target systems, e.g. experimental data of a real radiant heating system.

  • This paper presents an anti-windup gain selection method for a complex vector synchronous frame PI current controller. The complex vector PI current controller is more robust to the parameter variation than the state feedback decoupling PI current controller. The complex vector PI current controller also includes an integral term, which can results in windup problem when the controller is saturated due to physical limitation of the system. Furthermore, even an anti-windup is utilized, inappropriate gain can deteriorate the performance of the current controller. Therefore, appropriate anti-windup gain selection method for a complex vector current controller has been proposed based on the mathematical description of the current control system. The superior performance of the current control system with the proposed anti-windup gain has been verified by the experimental results.

  • In order to adapt to human's life and perform missions, a humanoid robot needs a height at least similar with children's. In this paper, we proposed a humanoid robot which is like a child who is taller than 1m. We presented showing the humanoid robot's kinematics, designing of a three-dimensional model, developing mechanisms, and the hardware structures using servo motors and compact size PC. Through this process, we designed and manufactured child humanoid robot 'CHARLES(Cognitive Humanoid Autonomous Robot with Learning and Evolutionary Systems)' that is robot is 1m 10cm tall and 8.16kg in weight. For robot's walking, we applied to ZMP-based walking technique and the creation algorithm is applied for walking patterns. Through experiments, we analyzed walking patterns according to the creation and changing parameter values.

  • This study investigated the characteristics of two aerodynamic indices, PTP (Phonation threshold pressure) and PTF (Phonation threshold flow) in patients with ADSD (adductor spasmodic dysphonia) and to see if two new aerodynamic indices can differentiate between normal and ADSD group. Additionally, PTP and PTF values were compared in terms of overall severity of ADSD in the patient group. The severity of ADSD was rated on a 7-point rating scale by two experienced speech language pathologists. The Kay Elemetrics Phonatory Aerodynamic System (PAS) (Kay Elemetrics Corp., Lincoln Park, NJ) was used to collect PTP and PTF measurements from 16 female normal subjects, 31 female patients with ADSD. Significantly lower PTF values (P< 0.05) were observed in ADSD when compared to those of normal control. Also, significantly lower PTF values in severe ADSD patients (P<.001). However, PTP could not distinguish patients with ADSD from control groups (P=0.119) and among the ADSD groups according to the severity (P=0.177). Consequently, PTF was more sensitive than PTP which might differentiate between normal speakers and ADSD and among different levels of severity within ADSD, suggesting that PTF could be a useful diagnostic parameter to measure the aerodynamic function of ADSD and provide the neurolaryngeal dysfunction in patients with ADSD.

  • Moxa-combustion therapy make use of heat stimulus and chemicals result form when cauterize the skin with moxa cones to medical cares. However, recently moxibustion have been utilized less than acupuncture for treatment of disease in a practicing oriental physicians. To determine variable parameters (the numbers, the times, the quantities, the locations) affected moxibustion's effects, the gastrin serum level in rats were observed. In experiment, male Spraque-Dawley rats (body wt. 140-160g) were selected. Anything is performed to normal group. Control group were only anesthetized with inhalation in normal group. Experimental group were anesthetized and cauterized with moxa at BL21 by way of direct moxibustion. The size of moxa cone is 1.6±0.2㎎. The moxibustion as 5 times a day for five days has shown most significant effects and the moxibustion as a aquantity of 1, 5, 10 times moxa united one respectly, inverse to quantity in effects. The moxibustion for five days has also shown an most significant effects. The moxibustion at unilateral acupoints BL21 have less effects than bilateral one and these effects had no difference between control group after vagotomy. This results indicate that moxibustion's effects are not direct proportion to moxa cone size and frequency but imply that there is adequate value of moxibustion.
