Pixel expansion and contrast are two major performance parameters for visual cryptography scheme (VCS), which is a type of secret image sharing. Random Grid (RG) is an alternative approach to solve the pixel expansion problem. Chen and Tsao proposed the first (k, n) RG-based VCS, and then Guo et al., Wu et al., Shyu, and Yan et al. significantly improved the contrast in recent years. However, the investigations on improving the contrast of threshold RG-based VCS are not sufficient. In this paper, we develop a contrast-improved algorithm for (k, n) RG-based VCS. Theoretical analysis and experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperformers the previous threshold algorithms with better visual quality and a higher accuracy of contrast.

As the standard lighting required in the threshold zone of a road tunnel is determined by the enough contrast. Lighting design, therefore, must be determined by the calculation method of threshold luminance based on the adaptation luminance of the driver approaching the tunnel. The veiling luminance and the luminance in the access zone were measured at different time and in different weather using the veiling luminance method, a kind of perceived contrast methods, and the L20 method when the range of vision was 20 degrees. On the basis of the measured data each threshold luminance was calculated and its results were analyzed.

To find an appropriate illuminance range for the disability glare caused by the road lighting system installed on guardrails, the influence of the disability glare was evaluated in comparison with the road lighting system of a streetlight. To test the disability glare, an indoor laboratory was constructed and a variation of luminance contrast threshold was evaluated. As a result, when the retinal illuminance was increased and glare sources existed within the narrow visual field, the luminance contrast threshold was increased. Although the road lighting luminaire was installed as low as the height of the guardrail on the road, when out of sight, the influence of the disability glare was small in comparison with the conventional road lighting system such as a streetlight.
This paper proposes an automatic liver segmentation method using improved partial histogram threshold (PHT) algorithms. This method removes neighboring abdominal organs regardless of random pixel variation of contrast enhanced CT images. Adaptive multi-modal threshold is first performed to extract a region of interest (ROI). A left PHT (LPHT) algorithm is processed to remove the pancreas, spleen, and left kidney. Then a right PHT (RPHT) algorithm is performed for eliminating the right kidney from the ROI. Finally, binary morphological filtering is processed for removing of unnecessary objects and smoothing of the ROI boundary. Ten CT slices of six patients (60 slices) were selected to evaluate the proposed method. As evaluation measures, an average normalized area and area error rate were used. From the experimental results, the proposed automatic liver segmentation method has strong similarity performance as the MSM by medical Doctor.

The electro-optical properties of polymer dispersed liquid crystals (PDLCs) depend on dispersion structures and nematic alignment which can be controlled by taking proper liquid crystal/polymer mixtures and process conditions. To achieve excellent electro-optical properties such as low driving voltage, good contrast ratio and negligible hysteresis, we have developed optimization procedure. Under the optimized conditions, PDLC of low threshold voltage less than 3.1 V, high contrast ratio more than 150 and negligible hysteresis were obtained.
In this paper, we propose a Tone Mapping Operator (TMO) that preserves global contrast and precisely preserves boundary information. In order to reconstruct a High Dynamic Range (HDR) image to a Low Dynamic Range (LDR) display by using Threshold value vs. Intensity value (TVI) based on Human Visual System (HVS) and contrast value. As a result, the global contrast of the image can be preserved. In addition, by combining the boundary information detected using Guided Image Filtering (GIF) and the detected boundary information using the spatial masking of the Just Noticeable Difference (JND) model, And improved the perceived image quality of the output image. The conventional TMOs are classified into Global Tone Mapping (GTM) and Local Tone Mapping (LTM). GTM preserves global contrast, has the advantages of simple implementation and fast execution time, but it has a disadvantage in that the boundary information of the image is lost and the regional contrast is not preserved. On the other hand, the LTM preserves the local contrast and boundary information of the image well, but some areas are expressed unnatural like the occurrence of the halo artifact phenomenon in the boundary region, and the calculation complexity is higher than that of GTM. In this paper, we propose TMO which preserves global contrast and combines the merits of GTM and LTM to preserve boundary information of images. Experimental results show that the proposed tone mapping technique has superior performance in terms of cognitive quality.

In this paper, an adaptive thresholding of the nonuniformly contrasted images is proposed through using the contrast pre-enhancement of the local regions and the bilinear interpolation between the local threshold values. The nonuniformly contrasted image is decomposed into 9${\times}$9 sized local regions, and the contrast is enhanced by intensifying the gray level difference of each low contrasted or blurred region. Optimal threshold values are obtained by iterative method from the gray level distribution of each contrast-enhanced local region. Discontinuities are reduced at the region of interest or at the characters by using bilinear interpolation between the neighboring threshold surfaces. Character recognition experiments are conducted using backpropagation neural network on the characters extracted from the nonuniformly contrasted document, PCB, and wafer images binarized through using the proposed thresholding and the conventional thresholding methods, and the results prove the relative effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

The denoising for image restoration based on the Wavelet Packet with absolute average threshold is presented. The Existing method is used standard deviation estimated results in increasing the noise and threshold, and damaging an image quality. In addition that is decreased image restoration PSNR by using the same threshold in spite of changing image because of installing a threshold in proportion of noise size. In contrast, the absolute average threshold with wavelet packet is adapted by changing image to set up threshold by statistic quantity of resolved image and is avoided an extreme impart. The results on the experiment has improved 10% and 5% over than the denoising based on simple wavelet transform and wavelet packet respectively.

This paper proposed an adaptive threshold method for detecting flame candidate regions in a infrared image and it adapts according to the contrast and intensity changes in the image. Conventional flame detection systems uses fixed threshold method since surveillance environment does not change, once the system installed. But it needs a adaptive threshold method as requirements of surveillance system has changed. The proposed adaptive threshold algorithm uses the dynamic behavior of flame as featured parameter. The test result is analysed by comparing test result of proposed adaptive threshold algorithm and conventional fixed threshold method. The analysed data shows, the proposed method has 91.42% of correct detection rate and false detection is reduced by 20% comparing to the conventional method.
Objective: To assess the accuracy and potential bias of computed tomography (CT) ventricular volumetry using semiautomatic three-dimensional (3D) threshold-based segmentation in repaired tetralogy of Fallot, and to compare them to those of two-dimensional (2D) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Materials and Methods: This retrospective study evaluated 32 patients with repaired tetralogy of Fallot who had undergone both cardiac CT and MRI within 3 years. For ventricular volumetry, semiautomatic 3D threshold-based segmentation was used in CT, while a manual simplified contouring 2D method was used in MRI. The indexed ventricular volumes were compared between CT and MRI. The indexed ventricular stroke volumes were compared with the indexed arterial stroke volumes measured using phase-contrast MRI. The mean differences and degrees of agreement in the indexed ventricular and stroke volumes were evaluated using Bland-Altman analysis. Results: The indexed end-systolic (ES) volumes showed no significant difference between CT and MRI (p > 0.05), while the indexed end-diastolic (ED) volumes were significantly larger on CT than on MRI (93.6 ± 17.5 mL/m2 vs. 87.3 ± 15.5 mL/m2 for the left ventricle [p < 0.001] and 177.2 ± 39.5 mL/m2 vs. 161.7 ± 33.1 mL/m2 for the right ventricle [p < 0.001], respectively). The mean differences between CT and MRI were smaller for the indexed ES volumes (2.0-2.5 mL/m2) than for the indexed ED volumes (6.3-15.5 mL/m2). CT overestimated the stroke volumes by 14-16%. With phase-contrast MRI as a reference, CT (7.2-14.3 mL/m2) showed greater mean differences in the indexed stroke volumes than did MRI (0.8-3.3 mL/m2; p < 0.005). Conclusion: Compared to 2D MRI, CT ventricular volumetry using semiautomatic 3D threshold-based segmentation provides comparable ES volumes, but overestimates the ED and stroke volumes in patients with repaired tetralogy of Fallot.
