User's characteristics on the screen adjustment of color TV were studied. Two experiments were performed. In the first experiment, the characteristic of screen adjustment according to TV program, ambient luminance, and gender was investigated. Twenty subjects (10 females and 10 males) were participated in this experiment. Set points of brightness, contrast, tint, and color were measured on TV screen and analyzed. Brightness and contrast were significant on gender at significant level 0.01 and color was significant on gender at significant level 0.1. Tint was significant on program at significant level 0.01. The second experiment was performed to supplement the first experiment. The influences of ambient luminance, presented image, screen setting criteria, and gender were investigated. We simplified the first experiment in the second one. We restricted dependent variables (screen control variables) to only two, brightness and contrast. Other control variables were fixed to middle values. Brightness and contrast were significant on gender and screen setting criteria at significant level 0.01. In conclusion, we found that ambient luminance and presented image had no significant effects on TV screen adjustment and TV program had only a significant effect on tint. However, we found that gender and screen setting criteria had significant effects in most conditions.

The purpose of this research was to investigate the effects of used color and tone on harmony perception by applying contrast coloration of shirt and necktie. This experiment designed by shirt color(red, blue, purple, green), tie color(green or blue tie with red shirt, yellow or red tie with blue shirt, yellow or green tie with purple shirt, purple or red tie with green shirt), shirt tone(vivid, light, dull, dark), tie tone(vivid, light, dull, dark), and perceiver gender(a male, a female). The experimental materials developed for this study were a set of stimulus and response scales, we harmonized those colors of shirts and neckties contrast, then made shirt and necktie tone differently. The subjects of this research were 640 male and 640 female college students. The data was analyzed by using SPS program. Shirt color, tie color, shirt tone, tie tone, perceiver gender influenced on harmony perception independently. Shirt color and tie color, shirt color and shirt tone, shirt color and perceiver gender, tie color and tie tone, tie color and perceiver gender, shirt tone and tie tone influenced on the harmony perception by interaction.

The present study proposes two normality tests using nonparametric rank measures for small sample such as modified normal probability paper(NPP) tests and modified Ryan-Joiner Test. This research also reviews various normality tests such as $X^2$ test, and Kullback-Leibler test. The proposed normality tests can be efficiently applied to the sparsity tests of factor effect or contrast using saturated design in $k^n$ factorial and fractional factorial design.

Principal component analysis, factor analysis and cluster analysis have been performed to analyze the relationship between air pollutants and meteorological variables measured in 1999 in Seoul. In principal analysis, the first principal has been shown the contrast effect between $O_3$ and the other pollutants, the second principal has been shown the contrast effect between CO, $SO_2$, $NO_2$ and $O_3$, PM10, TSP. In factor analysis, the first factor has been found as PM10, TSP, $NO_2$ concentrations which are related with suspended particulates. As a result of cluster analysis, three clusters respectively have represented different air pollution levels, seasonal characteristics of air pollutants and meteorological situations.

The present study investigates the effect of Accentual Phrase on F0 using a subset of large-scale corpus of Seoul Korean. Four syllable words which were neither preceded nor followed by silent pauses were presumed to be canonical exemplars of Accentual Phrases in Korean. These four syllable words were extracted from female speakers' speech samples. Growth curve analyses, combination of regression and polynomial curve fitting, were applied to the four syllable words. Four syllable words were divided into four groups depending on the categorical status of the initial segment: voiceless obstruents, voiced obstruents, sonorants, and vowels. Results of growth curve analyses indicate that initial segment types have an effect on the F0 (in semitone) in the nucleus of the initial syllable, and the cubic polynomial term revealed that some of the medial low tones in the 4 syllable words may be guided by the principle of contrast maximization, while others may be governed by the principle of ease of articulation.

We have studied electro-optic characteristics of reflective optically compensated splay (R-OCS) cell. The initial configuration of this cell is in splay form such that a mid director lies parallel to the substrate and around it hybrid structure is formed symmetrically so the optically compensation effect exists. Optimized optical configurations could be achieved by using a single polarizer, a quarter-wave film and a cell with quarter-wane retardation. The optimal cell retardation is 0.34 ${\mu}$m, allowing to have large cell gap. The cell provides high contrast ratio of 80:1 at normal direction and the region with contrast ratio over 5:1 covert up to 160$^{\circ}$ horizontally and vertically at all wavelength range.

영상의 화질을 향상시키기 위한 다양한 방법이 제안되어 왔는데 DCT 영역에서 영상의 화질을 향상시키는 방법은 각 블록별 특성을 효율적으로 이용할 수 있고 JPEG, MPEG 등 표준 압축 기법으로 압축된 영상에 적용이 용이한 장점이 있다. 본 논문에서는 DCT 영역에서 contrast measure를 이용한 화질 향상 기법에서 발생할 수 있는 blocking effect를 크게 감소시키는 lapped transform 영역의 화질 향상 기법을 제안한다. 모의 실험을 통해서 제안하는 기법이 영상의 contrast를 향상시키면서 blocking effect를 크게 감소시키는 것을 보인다.

Objective : In order to find antiviral compounds against Herpes simplex virus type I(HSV-1) and II(HSV-2) from herb medicines, a convenient virus-induced cytopathic effect(CPE) inhibition assay was introduced. Methods : Fourteen purchased herbal medicines, and their toxicity of infected cell and anti-viral activities were evaluated. Among them, the major part of herbal medicines showed cell stability compared with the contrast. Results : Cytotoxic concentration (CC) of the $H_2O$ extracts of Hyongbangpaedoksan against HSV-1 and HSV-2 was 181.12. This is high level cytotoxic concentration compared with the contrast. Therefore, we assumed that the high level cytotoxic concentration of herbal medicine play a major role in improvement of antiviral activity at the first infective cell. But antiviral effect was unable to figure out for selective index(Sl)=CC50/EC50. The other herbal medicines were unable to showed potent anti-HSV activity. Conclusions : The antiviral activation using herbs in this thesis have unlimited objects, to select research object will help to show the direction of antiviral drug development that have less side effect and more excellent efficiency.

In this paper, in order to reduce the blocking effect of block coded images, we propose the method considering the lowpass and bandpass components of Granrath's human visual model. This method consists of two-stage enhancement procedure. The first step is lowpass filtering which smooths out the blocking effect, and the second step is a high frequency enhancement procedure to increase the contrast decreased by the lowpass filtering in the first step. In the first step, the one-dimensional Gaussian filter which aligthns parallel to the edge direction is considered to preserve the edge in the block and the two-dimensional Gaussian filter is used to smooth out the blocking effect near the block boundaries. In the second step, the lowpass and bandpass components of the Granrath's model are considered to increase contrast in a restored image. The performance comparison of the proposed method and the existing mehtods is made by a computer simulation with several block coded images. We can see that the enhancement in the subjective quality of images of the proposed method is more significant than the enhancement in the subjective quality of images of the proposed method is more significant than the existing methods, though the proposed method does not show better performance on the PSNR gain, the poor measure of picture quality for block coded images.
