Na-Ca exchange transports calcium ion either into (reverse mode Na-Ca exchange) or out of the cell (forward mode Na-Ca exchange) according to the direction of driving force produced by the changes in ratio of intra- and extra-cellular Na concentrations. Thus, Na-Ca exchange is regarded as the regulator of myocardial contraction. However, the existence of reverse mode Na-Ca exchange and its role in myocardial contraction is still questioned. Present study was performed to identify the presence of reverse mode Na-Ca exchange and its possible involvement in the regulation of myocardial contraction in rat heart. Using the left atria of rat, contraction was induced by electrical field stimulation (EFS, 0.5 msec duration and supramaximal voltage). Changing of the stimulation frequencies from resting 4 Hz to 0.4, 1 or 8 Hz caused typical negative staircase effect in twitch tension, but $^{45}Ca$ uptake showed bimodal increase. When the stimulation frequency was abruptly changed from 4 Hz to 0.4 Hz the atrial twitch tension showed three phased-enhancement, that is, the initial rapid increase (the first phase) followed by rapid decrease (the second phase) and stabilization (the third phase). $^{45}Ca$ uptake was equivalent to tension, i.e. initial significant increase in first 30 second and then decrease. Benzamil treatment abolished the first phase of increase in a dose dependent manner from $10^{-5}\;to\;3{\times}10^{-4}M.$ Bay k 8644 $(3{\times}10^{-5}M)$ treatment enhanced the inotropy induced by frequency reduction and abolished the second and third phase decreases. Benzamil treatment also suppressed the contraction stimulated by Bay K 8644. Although the contraction at 4 Hz stimulation was completely abolished by verapamil $3{\times}10^{-5}\;M$ pretreatment, the contraction reappeared as soon as the stimulation frequency was changed into 0.4 or 1 Hz and interstingly,$^{45}Ca$ uptake were significantly higher than no treatment. From these results, it is concluded that reduction of stimulation frequency causes calcium influx by the reverse mode Na-Ca exchange, resulting in initial rapid increase of twitch tension. then it turns into forward mode exchange to efflux the calcium, resulting in decrease of the twitch tension in left atria of rat.

This study aimed to investigate whether isometric lower limb exercise can activate contralateral trunk muscles and whether the magnitude of muscle activation is related to lower limb movement in sitting. This study included 25 healthy young subjects (20 males and 5 females). The magnitude of trunk muscle activation was measured using surface electromyography (EMG) during hip flexion, extension, adduction, and abduction, and a significant difference was observed in the activation levels of trunk muscles among the tests (p<.01). The EMG activity of the multifidus (MF) and erector spinae (ES) muscles on the contralateral side were significantly greater during hip extension. However, the activation levels of the contralateral internal oblique (IO) and rectus abdominis (RA) muscles were greatest during hip flexion. The MF : ES EMG ratio was significantly greater during hip isometric during hip isometric flexion and abduction compared to hip extension and adduction. There was no significantly difference in the IO : RA ratio during the isometric contractions toward different directions. These findings indicate that isometric lower limb exercise can elicit trunk muscle contraction on the contralateral side and may therefore be helped for developing contralateral trunk muscle strength in individuals undergoing rehabilitation.

In this paper, we investigated the maximum ankle joint plantarflexion moment(MPM) of young and elderly subjects during various modes of isokinetic contractions with special interest in the elderly females who were reported to have higher fall rate than the elderly males. Subjects include the young subjects(14 males: $22.7{\pm}2.5yrs$, 13 females: $20.5{\pm}1.3yrs$) and the elderly subjects(17 males: $65.8{\pm}10.5yrs$, 26 females: $71.4{\pm}5.2yrs$). The MPM was normalized by each subject's body weight. The MPM of elderly females was the weakest among the groups, particularly, at the eccentric contractions. The male-to-female ratio of MPM was greater in the elderly than in the young and the young-to-elderly ratio of MPM was greater in female than in male, both during the eccentric contractions. The result suggests that the decreased muscle force per body weight, especially at the eccentric contraction, may be one reason for the more frequent fall of the elderly female than the elderly male.
The muscarinic antagonist l-[benzilic-4,4'-$^3H$]quinuclidinyl benzilate([$^3H$]QNB) bound to a single class of muscarinic receptor with high affinity in guinea pig ileal membranes. The $K_{D}$ and B$_{max}$ values for [$^3H$]QNB calculated from analysis of saturation isotherms were 54 pM and 156fmol/mg, respectively. H$_{1}$-blockers inhibited [$^3H$]QNB binding to ileal membranes with $K_{i}$ values ranged from 0.008 $\mu{M}$ to 1.6 $\mu{M}$. The pseudo-Hill coefficients of H$_{1}$-blockers for inhibition of [$^3H$]QNB binding to the ileal membranes were close to unit. The $K_{i}$ values for H$_{1}$-blockers were similar to the $K_{M}$ values calculated by Schild plot of functional data obtained from inhibition of the carbachol-induced contraction in guinea-pig ileum, suggesting that binding of H$_{1}$-blockers vs [$^3H$]QNB in ileal membranes represents an interaction with a receptor of physiological relevance. The $K_{H}$ values of H$_{1}$-blockers for H$_{1}$-receptor estimated from inhibition of the histamine-induced contraction were the range of 0.15 nM to 56.5 nM. The $K_{M}$/K$_{H}$ ratio of H$_{1}$-blockers varied over a wide range of 3 to 2300. Thus, the antihistaminic potencies of H$_{1}$-blockers do not correlate with their antimuscarinic potencies, which suggest that antihistamines have different antimuscarinic potencies in therapeutic blood levels causing similar antiallergic effect. Among 13 traditional antihistaminics examined in this study, drug having the highest and the lowest $K_{M}$/K$_{H}$ ratio is triprolidine and diphenidol, respectively. The present results demonstrate that the antimuscarinic property of antihistamines is not necessary for their antiallergic effect, and data on the affinity of antihistamines for muscarinic and H$_{1}$-receptors can be an important parameter in the selection and evaluation of these drugs.

Objective: The purpose of this study is to compare EMG activity during horticulture motion and upper limb rehabilitation motion, to confirm whether horticulture motion is suitable for upper extremity rehabilitation of hemiparesis. Design: Three-group cross-sectional design. Methods: The 45 subjects were divided into three groups: hemiparesis (n=15), elderly (n=15) and healthy (n=15). We have recorded EMG signals of six upper limb muscles Upper trapezius (UT), Middle deltoid (MD), Anterior deltoid (AD), Biceps brachii (BB), Triceps brachii (TB), Brachioradialis (BR) during horticultural motions and three upper limb rehabilitative motions. The dependent variables were peak EMG, integral EMG, co-contraction ratio. A two-way repeated measures ANOVA was used to compare the horticultural motion and rehabilitation motion of the three groups. Results: The peak EMG was significantly different in MD, AD, BB, TB according to the motion(p<0.05), and the UT, BB were significant differences according to the group(p<0.05). The integral EMG was significantly different in MD, AD, BB, TB, BR according to the motion(p<0.05), and the BB were significant differences according to the group(p<0.05). The co-contraction ratio was significantly different in TB/BB according of the motion, and there was no difference between the groups. Conclusions: As a result of this study, horticultural motion alone was insufficient for upper arm rehabilitation, and horticultural motion alone was insufficient to induce continuous activity of the forearm.
This research was made to manufacture the fabric for interior uses by spinning a low melting mono 4 denier PET staple fiber with a soluble 1.4 denier fine PET fiber. The blended yarn has a thickness ranging from 10's to 14's, and the soluble PET fine fiber was dissolved to make a pore in the polymer. Thereby a snap property was decreased and a resilience property was improved to be suitable for a functional synthetic leather. In order to attain the optimum condition, a mechanical property according to fineness, and mixing ratio of low melting polymer, warp density, weft density and blending ratio, and a heat contraction ratio according to blending ratio were experimented. The warp density, 220 T/inch of fine denier PET and the weft density, 64 T/inch of thick denier PET were generated to 4/4 both twill weave fabric having constant tensile property and thickness.
Purpose: This study was to investigate the relations and odds ratio between hs-CRP and the risk factors of metabolic syndrome according to glucose intolerance and diabetes among the residents of a rural community. Methods: The subjects include 1,968 adults aged from 40 to 70 who were divided into four groups and a diabetes group according to glucose intolerance to compare the relations and risk ratio between hs-CRP and the risk factors of metabolic syndrome. Results: The results reveal that the greater the subjects' glucose intolerance was, the higher their hs-CRP became and the more risk factors of metabolic syndrome they had. The impaired glucose tolerance group showed 1.7 times higher blood pressure than the control group. The diabetes group showed a high odds ratio with 2.3 times higher blood pressure, 2.2 times higher abdominal obesity, and 2.4 times higherW/Ht than the control group. And the odds ratio increased significantly by 1.7 times in the hs-CRP intermediate risk group and 2.5 times in the high risk group compared with the control group. Conclusion: Considering the study results, it is very important to monitor abdominal obesity, blood pressure and the intermediate and high risk group of hs-CRP in order to reduce the contraction of cardiovascular diseases.
A parametric study of the thermal effects of a half-circumferential grooved journal bearings under aligned and misaligned conditions has been carried out by solving numerically the coupled Reynolds and energy equation system. Five different sets of boundary conditions for the energy equation have been used which include mixing between recirculating oil and inlet oil and a contraction ratio for the cavitation region. The effects of changes of the inlet oil temperature and pressure, the wall temperature and the L/D ratio have also been examined. For the range of parameters found in internal combustion engines, the mixing effectiveness at the groove and the resulting final mixture temperature have been found to be as important as the wall temperature and the heat transfer rate. The variability of the temperature, though, has been shown to smooth out the peaks of both pressure and friction during misaligned condition Distributions of friction and pressure in the oil are also examined which may be useful in attempts to reduce friction without reducing load. Results for an axial grooved bearing are also presentsed for comparision purpose.

A numerical analysis was performed on the fluid flow in injector orifice of a liquid rocket engine. The present computational code was verified against the published data for turbulent flow in a pipe with a sudden expansion-contraction. Considered were the parameters for the flow analysis in an injector orifice: Reynolds number, ratio of mass flow rate of the injector orifice and inlet flow rate, and slant angle of the injector orifice. The discharge coefficient increased slightly as the Reynolds number increased. The slant angle of the injector changed critically the discharge coefficient. The discharge coefficient increased by 7% when the slant angle changed from $-30^{\circ}$ to $30^{\circ}$ The ratio of mass flow rate had relatively little impact on the discharge coefficient.

This study set up 25, 35% for silica fume, SFFB's 2 level and water-combination material ratio, silica fume 10% for substitution ratio, and 4 level of SFFB 5, 10, 15(%) in order to compare and analyze the quality characteristic of ultra high strength concrete according to the substitution ratio of silica fume free binder (SFFB) that can be utilized as a substitute material for silica fume. As a result of an experimentation, the lower water-combination material ratio was, the higher addition ratio of high performance water-reducing agent for securing target liquidity increased, and it indicated the tendency that addition ratio of high performance water-reducing agent decreases because of material characteristic that SFFB has a lower absorptiveness than silica fume. The best strength was shown when SFFB substitution ratio is 10% at compressive strength and when substitution ratio is 15% at tensile strength, and it was indicated that at autogenous shrinkage contraction decreases compared to Plain(SF) regardless of substitution ratio of W/B and SFFB.
