  • The mechanical properties of $SiC_f/SiC$ composites reinforced with continuous SiC fiber have been investigated in conjunction with the detailed analysis of their microstructures. Especially, the effect of test temperature on the characterization of $SiC_f/SiC$ composites was examined. In this composite system, a braiding Hi-Nicalon SiC fibric was selected as a reinforcement. $SiC_f/SiC$ composites have been fabricated by the reaction sintering process, using the complex matrix slurry with a constant composition ratio of SiC and C particles. The characterization of $RS-SiC_f/SiC$ composites was investigated by means of SEM, EDS and three point bending test. Based on the mechanical property-microstructure correlation, the high temperature applicability of $RS-SiC_f/SiC$ composites was discussed.

The main purpose of the R & D efforts has been to produce materials for severe environments, including advanced energy systems, advanced transportation systems. The efforts have been started from the R & D of metal matrix composite materials and now the strong emphasis on ceramic matrix composites R & D can be recognized. This paper provides a brief review about the national efforts to establish advanced composite materials for future industries starting from mid 70s. C/Al and SiC/Al are the typical examples to be applied transportation systems and energy systems. The excellences in specific strength and overall mechanical properties, the excellences in environmental resistance make those materials as potential materials for advanced ocean construction and marine transportation systems. About the recent progress in ceramic fiber reinforced ceramic composites, advanced SiC/SiC composites including NITE-SiC/SiC will be introduced and the present status will be introduced.

  • In this study, the possibility of manufacturing a magnesium (Mg) composites reinforced with continuous silicon carbide (SiC) fibers was examined using a liquid pressing process. We fabricated uniformly dispersed SiC fiberAZ91 composites using a liquid phase pressing process. Furthermore, the precipitates were controlled through heat treatment. As a continuous Mg2Si phase was formed at the interface between the SiC fiber and the AZ91 matrix alloy, the interfacial bonding strength was improved. The tensile strength at room temperature of the prepared composite was 479 MPa, showing excellent mechanical properties.

  • This study aimed to theoretical calculate the thermal residual stress in continuous SiC fiber reinforced titanium matrix composites. The analytical solution of residual stress field distribution was obtained by using coaxial cylinder model, and the numerical solution was obtained by using finite element model (FEM). Both of the above models were compared and the thermal residual stress was analyzed in the axial, hoop, radial direction. The results indicated that both the two models were feasible to theoretical calculate the thermal residual stress in continuous SiC fiber reinforced titanium matrix composites, because the deviations between the theoretical calculation results and the test results were less than 8%. In the titanium matrix composites, along with the increment of the SiC fiber volume fraction, the longitudinal property was improved, while the equivalent residual stress was not significantly changed, keeping the intensity around 600 MPa. There was a pronounced reduction of the radial residual stress in the titanium matrix composites when there was carbon coating on the surface of the SiC fiber, because carbon coating could effectively reduce the coefficient of thermal expansion mismatch between the fiber and the titanium matrix, meanwhile, the consumption of carbon coating could protect SiC fibers effectively, so as to ensure the high-performance of the composites. The support of design and optimization of composites was provided though theoretical calculation and analysis of residual stress.

  • Continuous SiC fiber-reinforced SiC-matrix composites ($SiC_f$/SiC) had been fabricated by electrophoretic infiltration combined with ultrasonication. Nano-sized ${\beta}$-SiC added with 12 wt% of $Al_2O_3-Y_2O_3$ additive and Tyranno$^{TM}$-SA3 fabric were used as a matrix phase and fiber reinforcement, respectively. After hot pressing at 5 different conditions, the density, microstructure and mechanical properties of $SiC_f$/SiC were characterized. Hot pressing at relatively severe conditions, such as $1750^{\circ}C$ for 1 and 2 h, resulted in a brittle fracture behavior due to the strong fiber-matrix interface in spite of their high flexural strength. On the other hand, toughened $SiC_f$/SiC composite could be achieved by hot pressing at milder condition because of the formation of weak interface in spite of the decreased flexural strength. These results proposed the importance of weak fiber-matrix interface in the fabrication of ductile $SiC_f$/SiC composite.

  • In this article, the present activities regarding research and development of continuous SiC fiber reinforced ceramic matrix composites (CFCC) in Japan are reviewed. The key technologies in SiC fiber composites are interphase between fiber and matrix and its oxidation resistance. To improve oxidation resistance of interphase, various kinds of technologies such as environment barrier coating, high dense matrix, unti-oxidation matrix, multi-layered intephase have been developed. It is suggested that high performance, affordable processing cost, and excellent reliability will be important factors to be in practical use of CMCs in future.

  • The influence of cyclic loading history on the creep behavior of the 30 vol% hot-pressed $SiC_f/Si_3N_4copmposite was experimentally investigated at $1200^{\circ}C$. The duration of loading/unloading had great effects on the creep behaviors. The short term duration cyclic loading history test results showed significant reduction in the primary and steady-state creep rates. For example, 300sec loading/300sec unloading history resulted in 70% lower steady-state creep rate than that of the continuous loading. However the long term duration cyclic loading history test results showed little change in creep rates compared to those of the continuous one. The reason for the significant change in the short term duration cycles was estimated due to the change in the stress redistribution between the fiber and matrix during the creep recovery in the primary stage.

  • Polycarbosilane was synthesized by the Kumada rearrangement of polydimethylsilane in the presence of zeolite (ZSM-5) as a catalyst at $350^{\circ}C$. The prepared polycarbosilane had very low molecular weight ($M_w=500$), so that it was not suitable to fabricate SiC fiber by melt spinning. Further polymerization of PCS was conducted around $400^{\circ}C$ to obtain spinnable polycarbosilane. After polymerization, the polycarbosilanes were isolated by distillation according to the molecular weight distributions. The PCS with a controlled molecular weight distribution was spun into continuous polycarbosilane green fibers. The PCS green fiber was successfully transformed into silicon oxycarbide fiber. The room temperature strength of the SiC fiber was around 1.5 - 1.8 GPa. The oxidation behavior and the tensile strength after oxidation were also evaluated.

  • Silicon carbide (SiC) fibers mainly fabricated from polycarbosilane, a ceramic precursor, are applied as reinforcing materials for ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) because of their high temperature oxidation resistance, tensile strength, and light weight. In this study, continuous SiC fibers used to fabricate rope-type flexible heating elements capable of generating high-temperature heat (> 650℃). For high-efficiency heating elements, the resistance of SiC fiber rope was measured by 2-point probe method according to the cross-sectional area and length. In addition, the fabrication conditions of rope-type SiC fiber heating elements were optimized by controlling the oxygen impurities and the size of crystal grains present in the amorphous SiC fiber. As a result, the SiC fiber heating element having a resistance range of about 100~200 Ω exhibited an excellent power consumption efficiency of 1.5 times compared to that of the carbon fiber heating element.

  • Continuous fiber-reinforced ceramic matrix composites (CFCCs) have a complex distribution of porosity, consisting of interfiber micro pores and interbundle/interply macro pores. Owing to the complex geometry of the pores and fiber architecture, it is difficult to obtain representative microstructural features throughout the specimen volume with conventional, destructive ceramographic approaches. In this study, we introduce X-ray computed microtomography (X-ray ${\mu}CT$) to nondestructively analyze the microstructures of disk shaped and tubular $SiC_f$/SiC composites fabricated by the chemical vapor infiltration (CVI) method. The disk specimen made by stacking plain-woven SiC fabrics exhibited periodic, large fluctuation of porosity in the stacking direction but much less variation of porosity perpendicular to the fabric planes. The X-ray ${\mu}CT$ evaluation of the microstructure was also effectively utilized to improve the fabrication process of the triple-layered tubular SiC composite.
