  • Recently, KSTAR, Korea's superconducting fusion energy research and development device, has succeeded in driving the high performance plasma for 70 seconds for the first time in the world. Continuous plasma operation technology is an essential factor for commercialization of fusion energy power generation. Therefore, this achievement is expected to play a major role in the research of fusion technology required for future fusion power plants. In order to operate the KSTAR, the discharge process in which the neutral gas is turned into the plasma should be preceded in the start-up (breakdown) phase of tokamak operation. This process essentially involves the vacuum environment in the tokamak device. KSTAR has successfully operated a vacuum pumping system to achieve the target level of the vacuum environment through a high temperature baking operation, a discharge cleaning process and boronization.

  • The optimal operation problem of enzyme reactor of double inhibitions are dealt with Maximum Principle and Steepest Ascent Method. The operation policy of the intial concentration and amount of substrate, reaction time and the method of cross feed of substrate are determined in a system of reactor of constant volume add with cross feed of substrate. The policy for the soluble enzyme and the immobilized enzyme are greatly different from each other, and the performance index, the profit per unit time, of the latter are nearly twice greater than that of the former.

  • Evolutionary operation is a useful tool for improving full-scale manufacturing process by systematically changing the levels of the process variables without jeopardizing the product. This paper presents a system design for the evolutionary operation software called 'evolutionary optimizer'. Evolutionary optimizer consists of four modules: factorial design, many variables, mixture, and mean/dispersion. Context diagram, data flow diagram and entity-relationship modelling are used to systematically design the evolutionary optimizer system.

  • Critical conduction mode (CRM) operation is more efficient than continuous conduction mode (CCM) operation at low power levels because of the valley switching of switches and elimination of the reverse recovery losses of boost diodes. When using a sensorless digital control method, an error occurs between the actual and the estimated current. Because of the error, it operates as CCM or discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) during CRM operation and also has an adverse effect on THD of input current. In this paper, a current sensorless technique is presented in an inverter system using a bridgeless boosted power factor correction converter, and a compensation method is proposed to reduce CRM calculation error. The validity of the proposed method is verified by simulation and experiment.

  • The electric power system of Kwangyang steel works needs to keep the parallel operation with the system of KOPEC(Korea Electric Power Corporation) for supplying the power with safety. Once it is separated from KOPEC due to an accident, it operates the automatic Mill trip system to prevent huge fluctuating loads from the serious frequency drop. In spite of that, it is recent situations that the continuous growth of electric loads facilitates the frequency drop. Therefore, this paper proposes a model of generator control system so as to quantitatively analyze the response characteristics to the frequency change under the single operation, and also suggests the strategy for minimizing the frequency changes. The simulation results show it is desirable to operate the generators by 3% speed droop and 10% load limiter.

  • The automatic determination of vehicle operation status as well as continuous tracking of vehicle location with intelligent management is one of major elements to achieve the goals. Especially, vehicle operation status can only be analyzed in terms of expert experiences with real-time location data with scheduling information. However the scheduling information of individual vehicle is very difficult to be interpreted immediately because there are hundreds of thousand vehicles are run at the same time in the national wide range workplace. In this paper, we propose the location-based knowledge management system(LKMs) using the active trajectory analysis method with routing and scheduling information to cope with the problems. This system uses an inference technology with dispatching and geographic information to generate the logistics knowledge that can be furnished to the manager in the central vehicle monitoring and controlling center.

  • For a video data terminal (VDT) operator, visual strain was caused by continuous VDT operations was found id be recovered by watching the picture of virtual far point with the background of the complementary color when the treatment to recover from visual strain was carried out. When the VDT operator watches the picture of virtual far point with the condition of the complementary color stimuli on the CRT display in 60 or 120 minutes after the start of the VDT operation, the visual strain is recovered and the VDT operator is kept healthy.

  • Dissection of rat hippocampus using high-definition stereoscopic microscope system is demonstrated. Many surgical operation or animal anatomies are anatomized with stereoscopic microscope. With stereoscopic microscope system, the environments of operation is important factor to dissector. Lights, resolution of acquired stereo images, reflected on the liquid, colors and eye fatigue are fatal factors to dissector. We reduced reflections with two incident angle of lights at 45 degree and used a complementary color at the basement and reform the stereoscopic microsystem. Dissector has felt more comfortable after compensation and operation time is more continuous.

  • Evolutionary operation (EVOP) proposed by Box(1957) is a method for continuous monitoring and improvement of a full-scale manufacturing process with the objective of moving the current operating conditions toward the better ones. EVOP in experiments with mixtures consists of screening vital few components and making small changes in the current operating condition by making small increments in the proportion of the screened component. In this paper, how to determine operating conditions in EVOP in experiments with mixtures around the current operating condition is proposed. The proposed methods are illustrated with the simulated data based on the well known flare experimental data described by McLean and Anderson(1966).

  • There are two types of inverters that are generally used in induction heating systems: voltage type inverters and high-frequency half-bridge inverters. This paper proposes a new resonant inverter for induction heating systems using the current type full-bridge method. The proposed method can remove capacitors at the input end, and enables unity power factor operation by preventing phase differences of voltage and current. Furthermore, Zero Voltage Switching (ZVS) which is in tune with current type inverter can be adopted and continuous power adjustment is possible through duty ratio changes and frequency modulation in switching operation. Simulations and experiments showed that the proposed current type full-bridge resonant inverter could be used for unity power factor control and ZVS operation in induction heating systems.
