  • The purpose of this study is to identify the effects of pilates exercises on the body composition and satisfaction level of female college students, and, to do so, pilates classes were provided for female college students for 8 weeks. Their level of satisfaction was surveyed and their body composition before and after participating in the classes was also measured. Out of a total of 40 subjects, those who did not diligently participate in the pilates classes were excluded, and the data of 22 subjects who continued to participate in the classes were analyzed only. The components of body composition measured before and after the 8-week pilates exercise program showed that body fat percentage and abdominal fat percentage were reduced, while lean body mass increased. The level of satisfaction of the group of those who performed pilates exercises for 8 weeks showed positive effects. It will be necessary to develop various systematic and science-based pilates exercise programs that are customized for different age groups in order to reduce the level of the components of body composition associated with obesity.

  • This research is aimed to prove if harmful effects of smoking, as the main reason for recently elevated blood vessel disease, could be reduced by aerobic exercise, and identify the positive effects of the aerobic exercise on smokers' blood vessel health(blood pressure, pulse pressure, and blood vessel elasticity. Experiments were performed on 40 male smokers aged between 40 and 55, which was equally divided into two groups of Aerobic Exercise Group (AEG) and Non Exercise Group (NEG). After measuring each group's blood pressure, pulse pressure, and blood vessel elasticity, AEG practiced aerobic exercise program for 50 minutes for each trial, three times a week, sustaining 12 weeks while NEG continued daily-life patterns without any special treatment. In 12 weeks, blood pressure, pulse pressure, and blood vessel elasticity of both groups were measured as the same way. As a result, the difference of systolic blood pressure between the two groups was not significant, while that of diastolic blood pressure was meaningful. The difference of pulse pressure between the two groups was meaningful, and that of blood vessel elasticity was also meaningful in all measuring points including left hand, right hand, left foot and right foot. As a consequent, it was found that aerobic exercise had positive effects on middle aged male smokers' blood vessel health.

  • The purpose of study were to determine the effect of Elastic Band Exercise Based of PNF L/E pattern(EBEBP) on the balance in the elderly people. 24 health elderly women aged 65 to 85 years participated who live in Sun-cheon city Jeon-nam. Participants were divided into exercise(12) and control(12) group to randomized. Exercise participants received strengthening exercise for 30minutes in two times a week for 4weeks while control group continued their normal activities. Exercise used to yellow elastic band which 4 patterns of PNF by 1) hip extension - adduction - external rotation with knee extension, 2) hip extension-abduction-internal rotation with knee extension. 3) hip flexion - adduction - external rotation with knee flexion, 4) hip flexion - abduction - internal rotation with knee flexion. All subjects participated in 3 tests Berg Balance Test(BBT), One-Leg Standing Test(OLST), Functional Reaching Test(FRT). Exercise and control group were tested before and at the end of the test. This collected date were analysed by using paired t-test and independent t-test. The results of this study are as follows; 1. The experimental group was statistically significant difference in balance performance clinical test of BBT(p<0.01), OLST(p<0.01), FRT(p<0.001). 2. The control group was no significant difference in balance performance clinical test of BBT, OLST, FRT(p>0.05). 3. After the exercise, there was significant difference in the BBT(P<0.01), OLST(P<0.05), FRT(P<0.001) between the experimental group and control group in EBEBP. Thus, elastic band exercise based of PNF L/E pattern can result in improved muscle strength and balance in the elderly people. Further studies are required to show long-term effects of exercise training on the elderly people.

  • To investigate the effects of cardiac rehabilitation (CR) on cardiopulmonary exercise capacity in both elderly and younger patients with myocardial infarction (MI). Of the MI patients who received hospital-based CR between February 2012 and December 2015, we retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients who continued a follow-up through the outpatient clinic. A total of 46 patients (18 elderly patients (${\geq}60years$) and 28 younger patient (< 60)) were included in this study. The subjects visited the clinic to perform aerobic exercises with ECG monitoring based on their initial exercise tolerance test outcome. The exercise capacity was measured by symptom-limited exercise tests before and after hospital-based CR. Before CR, the elderly group had a significantly lower exercise capacity in peak VO2, METs, anaerobic threshold, exercise time, respiratory exchange ratio (RER) than the younger group. After CR, elderly groups showed a significantly improved exercise capacity in exercise time, HRmax, HRrest, peak VO2, METs, anaerobic threshold, and RER. Both elderly and younger groups showed similar improvement of cardiopulmonary exercise capacity after hospital-based CR. There is a very low cardiac rehabilitation participation and referral rates with MI patients in Korea. It is considered necessary to further expand the participation of cardiac rehabilitation in elderly MI patients.

  • To investigate the effect of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on the outcomes of cardiac rehabilitation(CR) in elderly and younger patients with myocardial infarction(MI). Of the MI patients who received hospital-based CR from 2015 to 2017, we retrospectively reviewed the medical records of the patients who continued follow-up through the outpatient clinic. A total of 39 patients (20 elderly patients (${\geq}60year$($64.1{\pm}3.6$)) and 19 younger patients (< 60 year($55.6{\pm}2.3$)) was included in this study. The HIIT program was composed of 10 minutes of warm-up, 30 minutes of interval aerobic exercise, and 10 minutes of cool down. The aerobic exercise based on their initial exercise tolerance test outcome consisted of 3-minute usual intensity phase (60-70% of heart rate/VO2 reserve) and 4-minute of high-intensity phase (70-90% of heart rate/VO2 reserve). Exercise capacity was measured by exercise tests before and after hospital- based CR. Before CR, elderly group had a significantly lower exercise capacity in Exercise time, peak VO2, METs, Anaerobic threshold, VEmax, 02pulse than younger group. Both group showed similar improvement of cardiopulmonary exercise capacity after CR. And HIIT is safe and effective in elderly patients. It is considered necessary to further expansion for the participation of high intensity interval training in elderly patients.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the effect of placebo(emotional stimulus) on physical fitness and psychological wellbeing. The subjects for the study were devided into two groups. One experimental group received placebo and the other control group did not receive. Each group was composed of 15 women. The subjects continued aerobic exercise for an hour each time, three times a week, for eight weeks. The enhancement of physical fitness has been evaluated by body weight, BP, pulse rate, skinfold thickness, circumference of waist and hip, body fat, % body fat, lean body mass, % lean body mass they were measured three times every 4 weeks. Also to evaluate the enhancement of psychological wellbeing, the self-esteem and self-perception were measured. The results can be summarized as follows : 1. The % body fat of experimental group decreased significantly than that of control group(p<0.1). 2. The % lean body mass of experimental group decreased significantly than that of control group(p<0.1). 3. There was no significant difference of other physical fitness factors between experimental group and control group. 4. There was no significant difference of self-esteem between experimental group and control group. 5. There was no significant difference of self-perception between experimental group and control group. From these results, it may be concluded that placebo(emotional stimulus) which received during aerobic exercise period is partially effective in the enhancement of the physical fitness.

  • The purpose of this study was to find out the effects of a 12-week aerobic exercise plus lifestyle modification on obese-induced metabolic syndrome in obese adolescent girls. A total of 52 obese adolescent girls (13-14 years old; body mass index (BMI) ${\geq}$95th percentiles for age and sex) purposely assigned to aerobic exercise group (AEG, n=15), aerobic exercise plus lifestyle modification group (ALG, n=18), or control group (CG, n=19). The AEG completed 12 weeks of walking exercise (30-60 min/day, 65-75% HRmax, 6 days/week), the ALG completed 12 weeks of walking exercise (30-60 min/day, 65-75% HRmax, 6 days/week) and behavior modification (60 min/day, 1 day/week), and the CG continued their normal life. The presence of the metabolic syndrome and component risk factors were determined before and after 12-week programs. The total prevalence of the metabolic syndrome was 48.1% in this sample (25/52) of participants at baseline. After the programs the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome was improved in the AEG and ALG 33.3, 27.8%, respectively. Group analyses showed significant difference in risk factors of the metabolic syndrome such that the AEG and ALG had significantly greater improvements in waist circumference, triglycerides, blood glucose and systolic blood pressure than the CG, while there were no significant difference in HDL cholesterol and diastolic blood pressure. Also there was no group difference between AEG and ALG in all measured metabolic risk factors after the programs. These results indicate that the positive changes of the ALG were not associated with lifestyle modification (behavior modification) but associated with aerobic exercise. However, long-term follow up studies are necessary to clarify the additive effect of the behavior modification on the metabolic syndrome.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of exercise through an in-hospital rehabilitation program on the enhanced immunity of immune cells and on the reduction of serum Cortisol, an indicator of physiological stress responses, among stroke patients. The 25 subjects were put to the program for two years from March 2, 2013 to February 28, 2015. The experimental group included 13 stroke patients from S and C Hospital in Gwangju, and the control group was composed of 12 common people. The findings were as follows: there were no significant differences in T cells between the experimental group with $69.18{\pm}11.78%$ and the control group with $70.75{\pm}6.33%$; there were significant differences in B cells between the experimental group ($12.95{\pm}3.74%$) and the control group ($16.27{\pm}3.49%$). Furthermore, there were no statistically significant increases of NK cells between the experimental group ($21.98{\pm}8.98%$) and the control group ($15.72{\pm}5.07%$) with p<0.05, though the values for the experimental group did rise. While there was elevated Cortisol before exercise in the experimental group (p<0.05), which recorded $13.65{\pm}6.85%$ before and $9.90{\pm}4.66%$ after, there were no differences in the control group, which recorded $11.635{\pm}4.02%$ before and $12.64{\pm}2.30%$ after exercise. The present study also found continued exercise through an in-hospital rehabilitation exercise program increased differences in NK and T cells before and after exercise in the experimental group and thus had effects on enhanced immunity. Meanwhile, differences in Cortisol before and after exercise in the experimental group decreased, which indicates that the continued exercise was effective in reducing stress.

  • The purpose of this study analyzes by confirming the structural relationship between the four variables of Chinese college students' health beliefs, planned behavior, behavioral control, and exercise persistence, this study can establish measures to enhance and improve college students' health beliefs and planned behavior and improve behavioral control. The purpose is to provide basic data to improve the level of continued exercise among college students. The EBI study verified reliability and validity through a preliminary survey targeting 380 people. This survey distributed questionnaires to college students at 52 universities from May 12 to July 21, 2023, and a total of 5,109 copies were finally selected and analyzed, excluding invalid questionnaires. As a result of the study, first, the structural relationship between variables showed that health beliefs had a positive effect on planning behavior, behavioral control, and exercise persistence. Second, planning behavior was found to have a positive effect on behavioral control and motor persistence. Third, behavioral control was found to have a positive effect on exercise persistence. Fourth, planning behavior and behavioral control were found to play a positive mediating role in the relationship between health beliefs and exercise persistence. Therefore, to improve college students' health beliefs, schools should open a health psychology curriculum. Furthermore, there is a need to strengthen college students' beliefs about their health by developing and distributing customized health education programs for college students.
