Intergeneric protoplast fusion between Gliocladium virens and Trichoderma harzianum (Gliocladium virens 와 Trichoderma harzianum의 속간(屬間) 원형질체융합(原形質體融合))

  • The protoplast formation and intergeneric protoplast fusion between Gliocladium virens and Trichoderma harzianum were attempted to obtain fusants. Protoplast formation was the most effective when the strains were treated with concentration of 5 mg/ml of Novozyme 234 and Cellulase at $25^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours in phosphate buffer, pH 6.5, supplemented with 0.6 M sorbitol as osmotic stabilizer. Auxotrophic mutants of G. virens G88 did not grow in minimal medium and benomyl resistant T. harzianum T95 from wild types, however, was selected by treatment with UV light as genetic marker to isolate fusants. When the intergeneric protoplast fusion between G. virens G88 and T. harzianum T95 was carried out using 30% PEG 4000 containing 10 mM $CaCl_{2}$, and 50 mM glycine (pH 8.5) as fusogenic agent at $25^{\circ}C$ for 10-15 min, the fusion frequency was $0.8{\times}10^{-4}$. Fusants obtained from intergeneric protoplast fusion were spontaneously segregated into va rious strains by continous culture on complete medium. Several intergeneric hybrids were classified into three types: parent-like hybrids, segregants, and recombinants.

Simulation of Turbid Water According to Watershed Runoff and Withdrawal Type in a Constructing Reservoir (건설 예정인 댐에서 유역유출과 취수형태에 따른 탁수의 거동 예측)

  • Watershed runoff and turbid water dynamics were simulated in the Youngju Dam, being constructed. The runoff flow and suspended solids were simulated and then thermal stratification and turbid water current in the reservoir were predicted by HSPF and CE-QUAL-W2 model, respectively. Considering selective withdrawal, we hypothesized 3 withdrawal types from the dam, i.e. surface layer, middle layer and the lowest layer. The maximum concentration of SS was 400mg/L in reservoir and it was decreased by the withdrawal. The inflowed turbid water fell to 30 NTU after 12 days regardless of the withdrawal types, but the surface layer withdrawal was a better type at turbid water discharge than the others. In current environmental impact assessment(EIA), we concluded that runoff and reservoir water quality predicted by HSPF and CE-QUAL-W2 was desirable, and appropriate parameters were selected by continous monitoring after EIA.

  • Typology in Contemporary Architecture wants to escape from the classical typology that has the problems about specific program of structuralism, typical repeatation of customary form. As visible and non-visible things are appeared in contemporary architecture through the analysis of the inner system involving development process of changing itself, typology of contemporary is utilized at a tool of form generation in the process of architect. And it notes that the structural properties of the building system. The form of contemporary architecture has the new connecting strucure not reduced to existing ones. It carries out generative access as a device in order to solve the complexity of society. From this perspective, we analyze the process of projects of contemporary architects that can be typological strategy not representation of post geometric form but a tool of form generation in architectural process. As a result, we can find four characteristics of typology as a tool of form generation; 'interference and mix of program', 'continous slabs', 'rearrangement through relationship setting', 'transformation of multi-layers'. These are expanding to the process that reflect history and context or infer from morphology. Therefore, typology as architectural process of form generation overcomes morphological typology of classical typology and suggests that the different architectural approach having potential possibility.

Continuous Measurements of Aromatic VOCs in a Mid-eastern Region of Seoul during Winter 2002/2003 (방향족 휘발성 유기화합물의 겨울철 연속 관측 연구)

  • In the present work, the distribution characteristics of ambient volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were investigated at high temporal resolution from a monitoring station located in a mid-eastern area of Seoul. A total number of 587 samples were collected during December 2002 to January 2003. The measurements of VOC were conducted by a combination of on-line air sampling and thermal desorption unit (TDU) coupled with capillary GC/FID analysis. A total of five aromatic compounds (BTEX: benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, m, p-xylene, and o-xylene) were measured routinely at hourly intervals during the whole study period. The mean concentrations of BTEX measured in our study period were found in the order: toluene (8.99 $\pm$5.38 ppb) > benzene (0.92$\pm$0.52 ppb) > m, p-xylene (0.51$\pm$0.34 ppb) > 0- xylene (0.48$\pm$0.35 ppb) > ethyl benzene (0.43$\pm$ 0.32 ppb). The BTEX concentrations were generally higher during the daytime than the nighttime, exhibiting certain patterns on a weekly basis. Results of our analysis indicate that the unusually high concentrations of toluene, while showing good correlations with other VOCs, can be a good indicator of air pollution in the study area.

Effectiveness of Bacterial Filter in Continuous Epidural Block (지속적 경막외차단시 세균여과기의 효과에 관한 연구)

  • Background: Continuous epidural block is widely used for surgical operation and postoperative pain management. The potential infection due to the epidural catheter is a definite harzard of continous epidural block. We investigated the effectiveness of bacterial filter in prevention of infection due to the epidural catheter. Methods: Patients scheduled for transabdominal hysterectomy were assigned to two groups by simple randomization (50 patients per group). All catheters were placed in the 2nd and 3rd lumbar epidural space, using careful sterile technique. Group 1 received injections by the epidural catheter with a bacterial filter and group 2 received injections by the epidural catheter without a bacterial filter. The infection rate in the tips of epidural catheter left for 3 days were compared between the two groups. Results: There was no significant difference in the infection rate between two groups. Conclusions: A bacterial filter of the epidural catheter for surgical anesthesia and postoperative analgesia dose not prevent all kinds of infection in continuous epidural block.

Phenytoin Induced Erythema Multiforme after Cranial Radiation Therapy

  • The prophylactic use of phenytoin during and after brain surgery and cranial irradiation is a common measure in brain tumor therapy. Phenytoin has been associated with variety of adverse skin reactions including urticaria, erythroderma, erythema multiforme (EM), Stevens-Johnson syndrome, and toxic epidermal necrolysis. EM associated with phenytoin and cranial radiation therapy (EMPACT) is a rare specific entity among patients with brain tumors receiving radiation therapy while on prophylactic anti-convulsive therapy. Herein we report a 41-year-old female patient with left temporal glial tumor who underwent surgery and then received whole brain radiation therapy and chemotherapy. After 24 days of continous prophylactic phenytoin therapy the patient developed minor skin reactions and 2 days later the patient returned with generalized erythamatous and itchy maculopapuler rash involving neck, chest, face, trunk, extremities. There was significant periorbital and perioral edema. Painful mucosal lesions consisting of oral and platal erosions also occurred and prevented oral intake significantly. Phenytoin was discontinued gradually. Systemic admistration of corticosteroids combined with topical usage of steroids for oral lesions resulted in complete resolution of eruptions in 3 weeks. All cutaneous lesions in patients with phenytoin usage with the radiotherapy must be evoluated with suspicion for EM.

Phased Scheduling of Continous Media Workload and its Experimental Evaluation (연속매체 부하의 위상 스케줄링 및 실험적 평가)

  • 멀티미디어 시스템에서 수행되는 부하 중 상당 부분은 정해진 시간에 주기적으로 수행되어 연속 매체(continuous media)를 처리하는 주기 태스크들이다. 연속 매체들을 처리하는 두 주기 태스크의 수행 요청 시간(release time)간에 인공적인 위상(phase)을 줄 경우, 전체 부하의 처리 타이밍에 영향을 주게 되며, 특히, 적절한 위상을 부여할 경우 부하가 고르게 분산된다. 부하의 고른 분산은 태스크 간섭을 줄여 지터(jitter), 종료시한 초과(deadline miss), 그리고 긴 응답 시간(response time) 등의 문제를 해소시킨다. 본 논문에서는 새로운 위상 스케줄링(phased scheduling) 알고리즘 및 알고리즘을 개발하고 평가할 수 있는 실험 환경을 제안한다. 본 논문에 제시된 알고리즘은 저자들의 선행 논문 1 에서 제시한 알고리즘의 대안이다. 새로운 알고리즘은 정확하게 최적의 위상을 찾지는 않으나 기존 알고리즘보다 빠르게 수행되며 적용 범위가 넓다.Abstract A multimedia system consists of substantial amount of continuous media workload scheduled periodically at deterministic time points. Artificial phase between the invocation times of any two continuous media tasks affects the timing of the entire workload. A proper phase configuration distributes workload uniformly over time and reduces task interference that may otherwise result in jitter, deadline miss, and long response time. The objective of this paper is to work out a phased scheduling algorithm and to evaluate its effectiveness. The algorithm in this paper is an alternative approach to our previous work 1 . It is almost as accurate as the predecessor but two of three times faster in identifying the appropriate phase vector.

Fast computation of Observation Probability for Speaker-Independent Real-Time Speech Recognition (실시간 화자독립 음성인식을 위한 고속 확률계산)

  • An efficient method for calculation of observation probability in CDHMM(Continous Density Hidden Markov Model) is proposed in this paper. the proposed algorithm, called FCOP(Fast Computation of Observation Probability), approximate obsewation probabilities in CDHMM by eliminating insignificant PDFs(Probability Density Functions) and reduces the computational load. When applied to a speech recognition system, the proposed FCOP algorithm can reduce the instruction cycles by $20\%-30\%$ and can also increase the recognition speed about $30\%$ while minimizing the loss in its recognition rate. When implemented on a practical cellular phone, the FCOP algorithm can increase its recognition speed about $30\%$ while suffering $0.2\%$ loss in recognition rate.

Colorectal Cancer Awareness and Screening Preference: A Survey during the Malaysian World Digestive Day Campaign

  • Background: Although the incidence of colorectal cancer in Malaysia is increasing, awareness of this cancer, including its symptoms, risk factors and screening methods, remains low among Malaysian populations. This survey was conducted with the aim of (i) ascertaining the awareness level regarding colorectal cancer symptoms, risk factors and its screening among the general populations and (ii) assessing the public preference and willingness to pay for colorectal cancer screening. Materials and Methods: The questionnaire was distributed in eight major cities in West Malaysia during the World Health Digestive Day (WDHD) campaign. Two thousand four hundred and eight respondents participated in this survey. Results: Generally, awareness of colorectal cancer was found to be relatively good. Symptoms such as change in bowel habit, blood in the stool, weight loss and abdominal pain were well recognized by 86.6%, 86.9%, 83.4% and 85.6% of the respondents, respectively. However, common risk factors such as positive family history, obesity and old age were acknowledged only by less than 70% of the respondents. Almost 80% of the respondents are willing to take the screening test even without any apparent symptoms. Colonoscopy is the preferred screening method, but only 37.5% were willing to pay from their own pocket to get early colonoscopy. Conclusions: Continous cancer education should be promoted with more involvement from healthcare providers in order to make future colorectal cancer screening programs successful.

$^{131}I$-O-Iodohippurate Renogram in Epidemic Hemorrhagic Fever (유행성(流行性) 출혈열환자(出血熱患者)의 Radio Renogram)

  • $^{131}I$-labeled-O-iodohippurate renograms in 15 cases of epidemic hemorrhagic fever(E.H. fever)during oliguric, diuretic and convalescent phase were analysed quantitatively and qualitatively, namely by its configuration, Tmax T 1/2 and renal index of Hirakawa. The results were as following: 1) Changes on the renograms in E.H. fever showed simultaneous bilateral renal impairment. 2) The characteristic configurations of renogram in the oliguric phase were: (1) Moderately decreased absolute amplitude of initial spike. (2) Continous rising second slope. (3) No appearance of terminal descent. Those were mast likely to those of renograms in acute ureteral obstruction or acute dehydration state. 3) During the diuretic phase, the renogram showed the point of maximal amplitude, but the steepness of 2nd slope was markedly decreased. The appearance of terminal descents was observed with unusually high amplitude despite of the tremendously large amount of urinary output during this phase. 4) In convalescence, the renograms were essentially normal in configuration, but the renal index of Hirakawa was not recovered until this phase. 5) Renograms in E.H. fever showed the characteristic patterns in each phase of its clinical course. 6) $^{131}I$-OIH-Renogram might be an useful method for the evaluation of renal function in E.H. fever during its course.
