A Study on Aircraft Fuel Requirements (항공기 연료탑재 기준에 관한 연구)

  • Airplane fuel takes large portion of airline operation cost and recently it has been grown up to about 25% of operating cost. So airlines are making efforts to reduce fuel consumption continuously and also aircraft manufacturers are making efforts to develop less fuel-consuming engines but it takes great expenses and times to develop such engines. In this study, fuel requirements of FAR and JAR, especially contingency fuel requirements, are compared and the effectiveness of each method is analyzed.

  • When decommissioning nuclear power plant (NPP), the first task performed is cost estimation. This is an important task in terms of securing adequate decommissioning funds and managing the schedule. Therefore, many countries and institutions are conducting continuous research and also developing and using many programs for cost estimation. However, the cost estimated for decommissioning an NPP typically differs from the actual cost incurred in its decommissioning. This is caused by insufficient experience in decommissioning NPPs or lack of decommissioning cost data. This uncertainty in cost estimation can be in general compensated for by applying a contingency. However, reflecting an appropriate standard for the contingency is also difficult. Therefore, in this study, data analysis was conducted based on the contingency guideline suggested by each institution and the actual cost of decommissioning the NPP. Subsequently, TLG Service, Inc.'s process, which recently suggested specific decommissioning costs, was matched with ISDC (International Structure for Decommissioning Costing)'s work breakdown structure (WBS). Based on the matching result, the guideline for applying the contingency for ISDC's WBS Level 1 were presented. This study will be helpful in cost estimation by applying appropriate contingency guidelines in countries or institutions that have no experience in decommissioning NPPs.

  • This paper presents a hybrid algorithm for solving optimal power flow(OPF) in order to enhance a systems capability to cope with outages, which is based on combined application of evolutionary computation and local search method. The efficient algorithm combining main advantages of two methods is as follows : Firstly, evolutionary computation is used to perform global exploitation among a population. This gives a good initial point of conventional method. Then, local methods are used to perform local exploitation. The hybrid approach often outperforms either method operating alone and reduces the total computation time. The objective function of the security constrained OPF is the minimization of generation fuel costs and real power losses. The resulting optimal operating point has to be feasible after outages such as any single line outage(respect of voltage magnitude, reactive power generation and power flow limits). In OPF considering security, the outages are selected by contingency ranking method(contingency screening model).   • This paper presents a knowledge based system to solve reactive power/voltage control problem in a power system. A need is recognized for new methods to alleviate a bus voltage limit violation more quickly when a power system becomes an emergency state due to contingency. To cope with this object, a set of indices concept which is used to make bus order list of reactive power injection priority is introduced. A set of indices, based on the overall system conditions, consists of steady state stability index, reactive power transmittance indes, voltage severity index and generator fuel cost index. This scheme and empirical rules of the knowledge on the basis of the human expert result in fast decision-making of the reactive power compensation devices since only the amount of devices is determined by the inference in the knowledge based system when the voltage violation is detected. In this approach, control devices such as shunt capacitor (reactor), transformer tap settings and generator voltages are utilized. Also the developed system herein can be used to minimize control action taken or generator fuel cost according to the user's option on the weighting factor. The results of a case study are also presented.

  • In designing System Protection Schemes (SPSs) in power systems, protecting transmission network against extreme undesired conditions becomes a significant challenge in mitigating the transmission line overloading. This paper presents an intelligent Special Protection and Control Scheme (SPCS) using of Differential Evolution with Adaptive Mutation (DEAM) approach to obtain the optimum generation rescheduling to solve the transmission line overloading problem in system contingency conditions. DEAM algorithm employs the attraction-repulsion idea that is applied in the electromagnetism-like algorithm to support the mutation process of the conventional Differential Evolution (DE) algorithm. Different N-1 contingency conditions under base and increase load demand are considered in this paper. Simulation results have been compared with those acquired from Genetic Algorithm (GA) application. Minimum severity index has been considered as the objective function. The final results show that the presented DEAM method offers better performance than GA in terms of faster convergence and less generation fuel cost. IEEE 30-bus test system has been used to prove the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed algorithm.

Electric Propulsion Naval Ships with Energy Storage Modules through AFE Converters

  • This paper proposes a novel electric propulsion system for naval ships, which consists of Active Front End (AFE) converters directly connected to battery Energy Storage Modules (ESMs). Employing the proposed AFE converters with ESMs in the power systems of naval ships can enhance the reliability and quality of the electric power. Furthermore, the fuel-efficiency of the generator can be improved by a higher loading factor of the generator and its prime movers. The proposed AFE configuration does not require an additional dedicated DC/AC converter for the ESMs. Instead of that, the AFE converter itself can control the DC link voltage and the discharging and/or charging of the ESMs. A control scheme to achieve these control objectives is also presented in this paper. The overall power system, including the generators and electrical loads of a naval ship, is implemented by a small scaled Power Hardware-In-the-Loop (PHIL) simulator. Through this experimental setup, the proposed system configuration and the power control strategies are verified. It is shown that the fuel-efficiency and transient dynamics can be improved in the normal and contingency operation modes.

  • This paper presents a scheme to improve transient stability using Newton's Approach for generation rescheduling. For a given contingency, the energy margin and sensitivities are computed. The bigger energy margin sensitivity of generator is, the more the generation of the generator effects to the transient stability. According to energy margin sensitivity, the control variables of generation rescheduling are selected. The fuel cost function is used as objective function to reallocate power generation. The results are compared to the results of time simulation to show its the effectiveness.

  • A Renewable Portfolio Standard(RPS) is a regulation that requires the increased generation of energy from renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, fuel cell, small hydro, biomass and geothermal. By environmental, technical and these regulatory reasons, the amount of renewable energy sources will be increased in a network. However, it is hard to assess risk of a transmission network with large scale renewable energy sources because the output characteristics of renewable energies are intermittent. This paper evaluates effects of a transmission system with supplemental large scale renewable energies into the existing system. To evaluate these effects, a methodology for risk level of components in a network is proposed considering steady state and contingency N-1 in this paper. We consider line current and bus voltage in each state of a network.

The objective functions are the minimization of generation fuel costs and system power losses. The control variables are the active power of the generating units, the voltage magnitude of the generator, transformer tap settings and SVC setting. The state variables are the bus voltage magnitude, the reactive power of the generating unit, line flows and the tie line flow. In OPF considering security, the outages are selected by contingency ranking method. The resulting optimal operating point has to be feasible after outages such as any single line outage(respect of voltage magnitude, reactive power generation and power flow limits). The OPF package proposed is applied to 10 machines 39 buses model system.
