The usage of Electronic Databases in Academic Libraries in Ghana. The Experience of Ghana Communication Technology University Library (GCTUL)

  • This study examines the use of electronic databases (e-databases) by faculty members of the Ghana Communication Technology University (GCTU). The study used a descriptive research method. Copies of the questionnaire were used for the data collection. Due to the manageable population, no sampling method was used in this study. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (IBM-SPSS 21.0) was used for data analysis. The results showed that most faculty members were aware of the availability of databases in the library. Additionally, the findings established that Emerald, as well as Taylor and Francis, were ranked highly in terms of availability and accessibility. The study identified problems such as difficulty in downloading information as well as poor internet connectivity. Based on the results, the study recommended that library management should address all the challenges that users encounter as soon as possible.

  • Library 2.0 advocates a socially rich, multimedia enabled, user originated and communally innovative environment that poses significant opportunities for the libraries to evolve and make themselves even more relevant and significant for her users. This paper presents a case study of the National Library Board of Singapore, in playing a vital role to facilitate the realisation of a long-term key national program, The Singapore Memory (SM) Project. SM embraces the attributes of the Library 2.0 environment to enable the nation's memory to be collected, organised, preserved, discovered, researched, augmented and created. The output of is an evolving collection of knowledge assets on Singapore along a Singapore Memory Content Continuum of existing content that is steadily augmented with new content. The content will be collected across all formats, in any language, from Singaporeans and non-Singaporeans, from any institution and agency, from Singapore and abroad, and from official and unofficial sources. The utopian scenario of SM Project is that any person, community, group or institution who has ever experienced Singapore in any way or has any material on Singapore will engage actively in the contribution, discovery and creation of content for the project, and thus become advocates to further encourage and catalyse more contribution, discovery and creation. The paper outlines the key approaches, concepts and ideas for the project. An important element is the proliferation, exposure and accessibility of the rich contents envisaged in the project. The SM proliferation plan along with examples of how two existing resources, namely, the Singapore Infopedia, a database of articles on Singapore's history, culture, people and events 4 and NewspaperSG, an online resource of current and historic Singapore and Malayan newspapers, have been designed are presented to demonstrate how content can be exposed, searched and discovered.

애드 혹 네트워크에서의 효율적인 콘텐츠 공유 방법 (Efficient Content Sharing in Ad Hoc Networks)

  • 최근의 이동기기는 이동하면서 전화를 걸 수 있고, 무선으로 인터넷을 접속하고, 멀티미디어 영상과 음성을 출력하며, 주변의 유사한 이동기기들과 무선으로 통신을 하는 등 다양한 복합기능 때문에 실생활에서 자주 사용되고 있다. 3세대 이동통신 서비스는 이동기기에게 편리하게 인터넷을 접속하는 서비스를 제공한다. 이 경우 이동기기 사용자는 서비스 이용 시 사용한 데이터의 양에 비례하여 통신요금을 지불한다. 본 논문은 peer라고 부르는 여러 이동기기들이 관심 있는 하나의 콘텐츠를 내려 받을 때, 비용절감을 위해 서로 협력하는 특별한 애드 혹 네트워크를 소개한다. 애드 혹 네트워크에서 각 peer들은 내려 받고자 하는 파일의 전체가 아닌 각자에게 할당된 부분만을 비용이 부과되는 자신의 3G채널을 통해 내려 받고, 자신이 내려 받은 부분을 다른 peer들과 비용이 지불되지 않는 애드 혹 채널을 이용하여 서로 교환하여 교환된 각 부분을 통합하여 전체 파일을 재구성한다. 모의실험 결과에 따르면, 참여한 peer의 수가 많을수록 비용 절감 효과는 커지며 10개의 peer가 참여한 경우 90% 정도의 통신비용 감소 효과가 있으며, peer의 참여가 증가하여도 전체 파일 재구성 완료시간은 완만하게 증가한다.

위성정보 활용 사업의 생태계 모델과 콘텐츠 연구 (An Ecosystem Model and Content Research of the Satellite Information Utilization Business)

  • 위성정보 데이터는 지구를 관측하여 수집한 데이터로 국방, 자연재해, 위치기반 서비스, 인프라, 환경, 에너지, 해양, 보험 등의 다양한 분야에서 활용되고 있다. 본 연구는 위성정보 활용 사업의 선순환 구조와 산업의 비즈니스 생태계 모델을 제시하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 연구방법으로 문헌, 온라인, 어플리케이션, 콘텐츠 등의 영역에서 사례를 수집하고 분석하였다. 사례를 살펴본 결과 공공 및 상업 영역에서의 콘텐츠 서비스에 관한 비즈니스 모델을 제시하고 있었으며, 복합 범용 기술 차원에서 콘텐츠 제작과 서비스를 용이하게 하는 다양한 알고리즘 기술을 개발하고 있었다. 둘째, 위성정보 데이터의 콘텐츠 유형화 차원에서 생태환경 모니터링 콘텐츠, 도시공간 모니터링 콘텐츠, 위성정보 기반 게임 콘텐츠로 세분화할 수 있었다. 셋째, 위성정보 기반의 콘텐츠가 사용자에게 제안하는 콘텐츠의 가치를 정보적 가치, Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) 가치, 교육적 가치, 콘텐츠적 가치 등으로 세분화할 수 있었다. 연구 결과로 위성정보 활용 사업의 전개 과정을 시각적으로 도식화한 생태계 모델과 콘텐츠 발굴의 유형화 방안을 제시하고 있다. 더 나아가 위성정보 데이터의 대중화 및 접근성을 높이는 콘텐츠 창출의 다양한 방안을 모색하고, 정부의 투자 확대, 인력 양성, 법적 제도 구축 등을 토대로 한국형 K-위성정보 활용 사업의 생태계 모델을 모색해야 한다는 제언을 하고 있다.

의료에 대한 환자들의 불만: 1990-2015년 신문기사에 대한 내용분석 (Patient Dissatisfaction with Health Care: A Content Analysis of Newspaper Articles Between 1990 to 2015)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to identify patients' dissatisfaction with health care through a content analysis of newspaper articles published between 1990 and 2015. It focused on developing a systematic coding scheme for content analysis as well as exploring changes over time. Methods: Among articles published by 8 major national newspapers, our content analysis used those that specifically covered the dissatisfaction of patients. Coding taxonomy was developed in two domains: (1) contents of dissatisfaction and (2) special circumstances and groups where complaints were filed. All articles were then coded according to this coding taxonomy to conduct descriptive analysis. Results: A total of 794 complaints were discovered in 338 articles. Contents of dissatisfaction were classified into 7 categories and 50 subcategories. Complaints regarding accessibility, technical care, and administration were noticeable in special circumstances, including strikes and spread of epidemic diseases, whereas complaints on interpersonal care and cost were prominent in general population and circumstances. When comparing the proportion of articles covering patient dissatisfaction in general population/circumstances between 1990-2000 and 2001-2015, complaints on administration and physical environment diminished over time, whereas complaints on outcome of health care increased. Conclusion: This study offers a rare window to view the responsiveness of the Korean health care system on a long time horizon.

개인 맞춤형 OTT 콘텐츠 미리보기의 사용자 경험 디자인 연구 (A Study on User Experience Design of Personalized OTT Content Preview)

  • 본 연구는 OTT(Over-the-top) 서비스의 개인 맞춤형 콘텐츠와 미리보기를 사용자 경험 중심으로 분석하고, 이를 통해 미리보기 시청 경험의 발전 방향을 제안하는 데 목적이 있다. 이에 국내 운영 중인 OTT 서비스의 모바일 애플리케이션을 중심으로 콘텐츠 제공 현황을 파악하였다. 또한, 주 사용자인 20-30대를 모집하여 스티븐 앤더슨(Stephen P. Anderson)의 Creating Pleasurable Interface 모형을 토대로 작성한 질문을 통해 설문조사 및 심층 인터뷰를 진행하였다. 실험 결과, 미리보기는 콘텐츠 선택에 도움이 되지만 취향에 맞지 않았으며, 원하는 대로 시청하기 어려워 불편해하였다. 따라서 개선 방향으로는 미리보기 시청의 효율성, 취향성 및 접근성 향상을 위한 기능이 요구된다. 본 연구는 OTT 콘텐츠의 사용자 경험이나 미리보기 시청 경험에 관한 연구의 자료로써 활용되기를 기대한다.

배리어 프리 문화예술 콘텐츠 애플리케이션에 관한 연구 (A Study on Barrier-Free Culture and Art Content Applications)

  • The purpose of this study is to provide a cultural and artistic content guide service that can provide customized guides according to the disability status of the disabled who consume cultural and artistic contents. It is designed to provide a more individualized service through user input of disability information including the type and degree of disability of the disabled, the type of cultural and artistic content desired by the disabled, and information on the cultural and artistic level of the disabled. In addition, it is not limited by time and place, and it has the distinction of providing appreciation of cultural and artistic contents and commentary information of the corresponding cultural and artistic contents in various ways on the application. In particular, to provide cultural and artistic contents differently by identifying the type or degree of disability of the user, or to provide cultural and artistic contents with different expertise in consideration of the user's cultural level and taste, and to improve the cultural level. The most special feature is that it provides recommended content in consideration of the difficulty of art content. User analysis was conducted through in-depth interviews and persona techniques. As a result of the analysis, the needs for the enjoyment of culture and arts are also increasing among the disabled, while the services that reflect those needs are very insufficient. Therefore, all interviewees stated that they are willing to actively utilize these services if they are released. In the future, it is necessary to increase the accessibility of the disabled to culture and arts by developing various services using new ICT technologies.

An Analytical Study on the Importance and Performance of Factors of Online Video Usage: Focusing on the Comparison of Chinese and Korean Platforms

  • Purpose - The field of online videos has seen rapid changes in information and communications technology (ICT) development. Despite active academic research on the use of online platforms, few studies have analyzed the relative importance among the factors determined. In this study, the relative importance of factors found in previous studies was identified for users of online video platforms in China and Korea. Through this, factors that should be considered first in research on online video use were derived. In addition, the quality level of online video platforms currently used in China and Korea was measured and used for analysis. The analysis results can provide information for companies to enter Chinese and Korean markets and also be useful to platform providers aiming to increase usage. Design/methodology - Among the factors of Online Video Usage identified in previous studies, 13 factors to be studied were selected through focus group interviews and hierarchized into 2 layers. For the analytic hierarchy process (AHP), each factor was designed as a pairwise comparison questionnaire. The survey included questions on the quality of online video platform currently in use. Data collection was conducted on 16 platforms in China and 11 platforms in Korea, and the relative importance of factors and user perspectives was compared and analyzed using importance performance analysis (IPA). In the analytical process, platforms were divided into over-the-top (OTT) group and Creator group according to the weight of user-generated content, and data analysis focused on these groups. Findings - As a result of AHP, China and Korea showed both "Fun" and "Interests" factors at the top, while the importance of the Entertainment factor "Vicarious satisfaction" was very different for China and Korea. "Relationship with content creators" was the most important factor in China, but it ranked the lowest in Korea. The IPA showed that the factors with high importance and performance were fun, interests, and easy accessibility for both China and Korea. In contrast, the factors that showed low performance compared to high importance in China were relationship with content creators, relationship with acquaintances/friends, and trustworthiness. As for Korea, vicarious satisfaction was observed; thus, this study has raised the need for academic and industrial interest in vicarious satisfaction. The results show that fun, interests, vicarious satisfaction, and easy accessibility of the platform are factors that must be included in further studies on online videos. Originality/value - Existing studies related to the use of online platforms have derived factors or focused on the influence relationship between factors and performance. However, few studies have analyzed the relative importance among the determined factors. This paper explores factors to be considered in future studies by deriving the relative importance between these factors from the perspective of users in China and Korea.

A Survey on the Journal of the Korean Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry: Implications for Growth and Development

  • Objectives: This study aimed to assess the status of the Journal of the Korean Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (JKACAP) and propose measures for its growth and development. Methods: The study was conducted using a questionnaire survey targeting members of the Korean Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. The six key elements analyzed were Access to the journal, Convenience following conversion to English, Recognition as an international journal and institutional achievements, Author perspectives on manuscript submission, Transition to an online-only journal, and Content and identity of the journal. Results: The survey revealed that email notification was highly effective for Journal Accessibility, with the website and search engines also frequently being used by members. Conversion to English in 2018 initially impacted readability and submission rates, but these concerns have decreased over time. However, the Recognition of JKACAP as an international academic journal was still not on par with SCIE journals, highlighting the need for further efforts towards SCIE inclusion. Despite these challenges and limited research opportunities, there was an active intention among members to submit manuscripts. Respondents showed a notable preference for the Transition to an online-only journal. Regarding content and identity of the JKACAP, members predominantly favored review articles and perceived the journal as a research and communication platform for Korean child and adolescent psychiatrists. Conclusion: The results indicate the need for JKACAP to enhance its digital accessibility, provide more support for domestic and international authors, and actively seek SCIE indexing. Addressing the varied content preferences of its members, improving the submission process, and transitioning to an online-only format could further its growth and solidify its position as an internationally recognized academic journal in the field of child and adolescent psychiatry.

공공도서관에서의 향토문화콘텐츠 활성화 방안에 관한 연구 (A Study on Vitalization Methods of Local Cultural Contents in the Public Libraries)

  • 본 연구에서는 공공도서관을 중심으로 한 향토문화콘텐츠 수집, 분류, 보관 등에 대해서 조사하였으며, 정부정책 수행 시 도서관이 어떤 방법으로 향토문화콘텐츠를 확보하고 전국 공공도서관과 협력하여 대국민서비스를 제공할 수 있을 것인가에 대한 방안을 제시하고자 하였다. 선행연구, 설문조사, 사례조사 등을 통해 도출한 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 공공도서관은 향토문화콘텐츠를 제공하는 타 기관 등과 달리 지역주민들의 접근성이 높다. 따라서 도서관은 지역주민의 지식 및 관심 강화, 지역의 역사성 보존 등의 공공적 역할을 위해 지역의 향토문화콘텐츠를 수집 보존 활용하는 역할을 담당하여야 할 것이다. 둘째, 도서관의 공공성을 기반으로 지자체 및 중앙정부의 적극적 관심과 지원 유도 그리고 타 기관과의 협력네트워크 구축 등에 의한 향토문화콘텐츠 관리여건 개선방안을 모색하여야 할 것이다. 이를 통해 지역 고유 향토문화콘텐츠 수집, 콘텐츠화 강화 및 다양한 요구를 포괄하는 이용자 중심 도서관 서비스를 확대해야 할 것이다. 셋째, 향토문화콘텐츠에 대한 정기적이고 체계적인 조사 및 구축을 통해 지역문화를 중심으로 한 도서관에서의 향토문화콘텐츠 수집, 창조, 활용의 서비스 확대를 제공해야 한다. 이를 통해 공공도서관의 위상 및 존재감 향상뿐만 아니라 장기적으로 지역 공공도서관의 새로운 역할 확대를 통한 인류문화 발전에 기여할 수 있을 것이다.
