  • In this study, the risk rates of different contamination sources of the Foreign material in a minienvironment were analyzed through CFD simulation. From the results, the ambient contamination sources mainly affect wafers in the FOUP, whereas the internal contamination sources mainly affect wafers laid on the robot arm in the minienvironment. And the purging plenum system is very useful in protecting the wafers in the FOUP from Foreign materials transferred from the FFU. However, this system is unable to protect the wafers on the robot arm from internal Foreign materials and the wafers in the FOUP from sources of the interface between the FOUP and the minienvironment.

  • With it being inevitable to change the method of supervising as it is reorganized to EEZ coming out of the old concept of contamination in Korean area of the sea, it costs a lot to have good enough systems of total control for sea contamination and prevention of contamination as well as the effective marine superintendence because the governing bodies such as Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, National Maritime Police Agency, and Authorities of Guiding Ships for Fishery, have their own source of laws and different ways to execute. In order to change such a wrong method of marine superintendence, it is necessary to conduct the merger and abolition of similar authorities with similar functions into authorities which are light but can be expected to play a major role, and to open the high-costing low-efficient organizations to make them remodel to be reborn as economical bodies. In addition to that, the maritime authorities, which are falling to incapable organizations not being able to work out any complicated tasks, have to be reborn as preventing bodies which take care of security and public peace and cut off a pollution source from sea and land.

  • The salt contamination on the distribution facilities was investigated with the wind direction and velocity. Most previous researches were concentrated on the measurement of The Equivalent Salt Deposit Density(ESDD) without environmental consideration. The wind direction and velocity of the many environmental conditions are the most important factors to analyze salt contamination. Pohang area which is located on the south and east of the Korean Peninsula was chosen to do this research. This research will present the result of ESDD depending on the wind direction and velocity.

  • PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) brush cleaning method is a typical cleaning method for semiconductor cleaning process especially post-CMP cleaning. PVA brush contacts with the wafer surface and abrasive particle, generating the contact rotational torque of the brush, which is the removal mechanism. The brush rotational torque can overcome theoretically the adhesion force generated between the abrasive particle and wafer by zeta potential. However, after CMP (chemical mechanical polishing) process, many particles remained on the wafer because the brush was contaminated in previous post-CMP cleaning step. The abrasive particle on the brush redeposits to the wafer. The level of the brush contamination increased according to the cleaning run time. After cleaning the brush, the level of wafer contamination dramatically decreased. Therefore, the brush cleanliness effect on the cleaning performance and it is important for the brush to be maintained clearly.

  • Groundwater development and use have been increasing in Korea causing frequent occurrences of related hazards such as groundwater level decline, land subsidence, and groundwater contamination. To tackle these groundwater problems, central and local governments have set-up and maintained many groundwater monitoring programs such as the National Groundwater Monitoring Network and the Groundwater Quality Monitoring Network, which collect very valuable data on the overall status of domestic groundwater to aid proper groundwater management. However, several problems mainly related to the remediation of contaminated groundwater remain unresolved. Recently, there have been some incidents related to the contamination of groundwater, and these have drawn the concern of the Korean people. Although groundwater contamination has been investigated in detail, actual groundwater remediation work has not yet been implemented. The remediation of the contaminated groundwater must begin immediately in order to sustain the eco-system service of clean groundwater and enhance the welfare of the Korean people.

  • Purpose: To present our experiences in pseudomosaicism or maternal cell contamination in genetic mid-trimester amniocentesis confirmed through percutaneous umbilical blood sampling. Methods: From 1992 to 1997, repeated cytogenetic evaluation with fetal cord blood was carried out in 14 cases showing mosaic patterns. Results: We confirmed pseudomosaicism in 12 cases (85.7%) by repeated cytogenetic evaluation, and also maternal cell contamination in 2 cases. Conclusion: Repeated cytogenetic evaluation via percutaneous umbilical blood sampling was a rapid and useful method for the confirmation of mosaicism resulted from genetic mid-trimester amniocentesis.

  • Special methods for cleaning surfaces of stainless steel with a coating simulating radioactive contamination have been developed and studied. The removal of simulated surface contamination was performed using lasers in the micron spectral range with pulse durations of 8 ns and 270 fs. Optimal cleaning modes were determined for gas and liquid environments, achieving surface cleaning coefficient of over 90% in a single pass. A correlation between the degree of cleaning in liquids and the viscosity of the environment was discovered.

  • Fabrication of infrared (IR) transparent ZnS ceramics by spark plasma sintering (SPS) suffers from carbon contamination due to the graphite mold in the SPS system. In the present work, we consolidated transparent ZnS ceramics by SPS using Mo metal foil to prevent the generation of carbonate and/or carbon impurities in the sintered product. The effect of Mo foil on carbon contamination and IR transmittance was investigated. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) results revealed that the C-O absorption peak was significantly reduced, however, sulfur vacancies were generated, thus, deteriorating the overall transmittance. The sulfur vacancies were eliminated by post-annealing the specimen in a nitrogen atmosphere, whereby the overall IR transmittance was partially recovered. The results indicate that metal foil wrapping of green bodies could be potentially applicable for the fabrication of carbon contamination-free ZnS ceramics via SPS system.
