A Truck Dispatching Problem in the Inland Container Transportation with Empty Container (공 컨테이너를 고려한 컨테이너 내륙수송에서의 차량배차문제)

  • In the container transportation of inland depots the empty container is an important issue. The truck dispatching problem in this paper is considered under restriction about empty containers. When a full container arrives in a depot by truck, after unloading operation the full container is changed to an empty container. After loading operation an empty container is changed to a full container. We suggest an integrated approach to the problem of simultaneously managing empty truck and container movements. We would like to find the truck dispatching method minimizing empty truck movements and empty container movements. In this paper, a mixed integer programming model is developed to obtain the optimal truck dispatching in container transportation and heuristic is developed to give a good solution in much shorter time. The numerical examples are studied and the proposed heuristic is also compared with the result of numerical examples.

  • A trailer truck is a major equipment for transporting containers, and its driving is difficult due to two degrees of freedom which exist in the joint part between truck and trailer. Especially Backing a trailer truck to a parking home is a difficult exercise for all but the most skilled truck drivers. Normal driving instincts lead to erroneous movements. When watching a truck driver backing toward a parking home, one often observes the driver backing, going forward, backing again, going forward, etc., and finally backing to the desired position along the parking home. This paper discusses the design of the controller to control the steering of a trailer truck while only backing up to a parking home from an initial position. In this paper, we propose a backing up control system for a container trailer truck using fuzzy theory where the primitive fuzzy control rules are macroscopically designed using an expert's knowledge, and the control rules are regulated by LIBL(Linguistic Instruction Based Learning) to enable to back up successfully the trailer tuck to a parking home from arbitrary initial position. The validity of the proposed parking control system is shown by applying it to some initial positions on the simulator for container trailer truck.

Yard Design of the Container Terminal using the Simulation (시뮬레이션을 이용한 컨테이너 터미널의 장치장 설계)

  • This paper presents a method for designing layout on the yard and evaluating alternative designs of the layout by applying simulation. The method is based on the concepts of the conventional port container terminal with a perpendicular yard layout. In general, yard design of the container terminal is consists of the two major parts. One is to divide yard area between the number of sections and the number of runs and the other is to decide the number of equipment that is the yard truck and yard crane. In the past days, this design was depended on the experience of the terminal operator and the structure of the conventional terminal layout because it is a very complex decision problem. In this paper we suggest the method of yard design as a conceptual procedure and estimate the efficiency of the container crane and the optimal the number of equipment using the simulation. Numerical examples are provided in order to illustrate the conceptual procedure. As the example, the suggested method and simulation are applied to the virtual container terminal with a perpendicular yard layout. In the results, the number of sections and runs on yard area, the number of yard truck per container crane and the number of yard crane per run are decided. In additional, the traffic among blocks on yard layout is estimated in terms of rate.

  • This paper aims to compare four operating priority rules of RMGC (Rail Mounted Gantry Crane) used in semi-automated container terminal. The four priority rules employed in this paper are FCFS (First-come-first-served), LCFS (Last-come-first-served), TOS (Turn-over-served) and NFS (Nearest-first-served). And to compare the four operating priority rules, this paper analyzed productivity of RMGC and CC (Container Crane), waiting time of YT (Yard Truck) and RT (Road Truck) in container yard, and turnaround time of RT in container terminal of each priority rule by using stevedoring simulation. As a result, NFS was evaluated as the best rule to improve the overall productivity of container terminal in terms of all criteria.

  • This study analyzes the basic characteristics needed for motivating modal shift from truck to rail. The object of the study is to consider the resistance factor for container transported inland and the object point is the transfer node where modal shift occurs. The main contents of the study are as follows. First, the study looks at what shippers, engaged in inland transport of container, think of current transfer node environment. From this, the study analyzes what resistance factors are attributable to the lack of motivation in modal shift from truck to rail. Second, the study estimates mode choice models in which the resistance factors at transfer node are applied. Also by using this, the study draws out elasticities, and analyzes characteristics of resistantance factors in modal shift. Third, as its result, the study suggests methods to promote modal-shifting container transport from truck to rail.

  • Due to the increase in container cargo volume, the congestion of container terminals is increasing and the waiting time of gate in-out trucks has significantly lengthened at container yards and gates, resulting in severe inefficiency in gate in-out truck operations as well as port operations. To resolve this problem, the Busan Port Authority and terminal operator provide services such VBS, terminal congestion information, and expected operation processing time information. However, the visible effect remains insufficient, as it may differ from actual waiting time.. Thus, as basic data to resolve this problem, this study presents deep learning based average gate in-out truck waiting time prediction models, using container gate in-out information at Busan New Port. As a result of verifying the predictive rate through comparison with the actual average waiting time, it was confirmed that the proposed predictive models showed high predictive rate.

  • Busan Port which is the representative social overhead capital facilities for international trade of goods has been the driving force for economic development in Korea. Therefore, the central government should play the major role in building a rear road to Busan Port in order that it may function as a mojor port of Northeastern Asia through the systemization of mutual assistance among connected facilities, completely equipped with port-related facilities befitting to the principal port of imports and exports. In this study, the validity of container tax is being examined, analyzing container tax which Is considered as an obstacle to the development of Busan Port and its purpose, and grasping the present conditions by the realistic speculation on container tax issues and its abolition. First, the port rear road as a social overhead capital facilities, which connects port and expressway, should be considered as part of port, and port is social overhead capital invested by government. Second, the susan City imposes on container tax. As a result, a shipper and a shipping company are paying a double charge by paying container tax with port dues. Third, someone argues that port rear road is constructed as container truck generates much traffic, but it is unreasonable to conclude that container truck is seed of traffic jam because according to traffic survey of Busan City, container truck occupies only 1.45% of total traffic Forth, it has bad influence upon the competitiveness of Busan Port as Northeastern logistics base, as other ports who are competing with Busan Port like Singapore.   • After World Trade Center's Terror in 2001 and promulgating Maritime Transportation Security Act (MTSA, 2002) and Security and Accountability For Every Port Act (SAFE Port Act, 2006) in the United States, most of the attention on security of international transportation including marine carrier and facility has focused increasingly. Inspection stations in foreign seaport terminal including Busan, South Korea, have been installed by Container Security Initiative (CSI) and Customs Trade Partnership against Terrorism (C-TPAT). The inspection station, however, may directly and indirectly affect delay of truck turnaround time in the seaport, especially high and severe level of security. This paper was analysed a risk for the additional average delay of truck turnaround time incurring by the inspection station under the all level of security, C-TPAT and CSI. As a result of this risk analysis, the higher weighted inspection time based on raising security level, the less number of trucks to be inspected, which will derive high delay in the inspection station.

A Study on the Heuristic-Based Yard Crane Scheduling Method Using Truck Arrival Information (트럭 도착 정보를 활용한 휴리스틱 기반 야드 크레인 스케줄링 방법)

  • Literatures have considered mathematical model that change the job order of shipper for improving the operation time of yard crane. However, on the real site, it is impossible to change the job order decided according to the shipper's arrival order. Therefore, operation managers have been utilized the relatively simple strategy that job control is better but the process time of yard crane is longer due to the growth of yard crane's interference time and empty drive time. This study proposed a new yard-crane scheduling approach that decided the job order before the shipper's truck arrived the yard terminal. We utilize the Container Pre-Information Notice estimating the arrival time of truck. We developed the container terminal simulation model for validation of the effect of proposed scheduling approach. The results show that the proposed scheduling reduced the interference delay time and empty moving time of yard crane and shipper's truck delay time.

  • As interest in the Internet of Things increases, technologies are being studied to handle information exchanged between things using the Internet of Things. Specially, as container terminals are automated, the use of the Internet of Things in the terminals increases and varies. However, the use of the Internet of Things to enhance the efficiency of the container terminal operation is insufficient. Currently, the container terminal shows that the arrival pattern of the external truck is concentrated at a particular time. This resuls in gate congestion and affects the waiting times of the truck. The damage is caused by environmental pollution problems and social problems in neighboring port areas. Therefore, in this thesis, we will analyze the causes of the external truck's waiting time problems affecting the gate congestion at container terminals and study methods to mitigate congestion under Internet of Things environment.
